Super!

Prachtig uitzicht, mooie klim naar beneden, via touwen. Het was te koud voor een duik, maar het blauwe water zag er uitnodigend uit!

Czech Grand Canyon & The Karlštejn Castle
sep. 2015 • Venner
Visiting Velká Amerika, the “Czech Grand Canyon” and the Karlštejn Castle are the perfect day trip from Prague. Round trip train tickets are only 90 Korun per person (less than $4 USD and cheaper if you buy a multi-person ticket). It will take roughly 45-minutes on the train to travel from The Prague Main Train Station to the station in Karlštejn. Follow others on the short walk from the train station to the cute town of Karlštejn. From there it’s impossible to miss the castle that sits up on the top of the hill. After a steep climb uphill you will make it to the base of the castle where you can opt to do a 60-minute tour of the castle (offered in numerous languages). We decided to skip the tour and take pictures from the outside of the castle in order to save more time for our hike to Velká Amerika. We found someone working at the castle that spoke English to point us in the direction of the trailhead (which we had passed on our walk up to the castle). I have to admit we got lost a few times on our journey to the Grand Canyon. The trails are poorly marked and the only thing directing us was our phone’s GPS and the trees marked with yellow lines. After a 2-hour journey we made it to the Small America where we ate our picnic lunch. 30 minutes later we found ourselves at the Big America, which truly was an amazing site. Be prepared to get lost (it’s part of the adventure!) and leave extra time for your hike. The walk back to town was a breeze and only took an hour and a half. I highly recommended this day trip!

Czech Grand Canyon

Close to the Karlstejn Castle and the town of Morina, there are several abandoned quarries interconnected by tunnels named Czech Grand Canyon. Here you will find a set of limestone pit quarries with the best known as Big America, Little America and Mexico. There are a number of hiking trails around the quarries. A Prague native told me the stories of one man who was employed at the quarries and walked from the town of Lety each day 2 hours there and 2 hours back. Also, there was a soldier who was holed up in the quarry tunnels 10 years after WWII had ended. I guess he didn't know the war was over and lived in the quarries for an additional 10 years. We parked close to the restaurant Pod Draci Skalou (Under the Dragon Rock), cut through the woods on a well worn path to the castle, and returned the same way for a nice lunch on the covered patio of the restaurant.
