The peaceful Yak Meadow
5,0 av 5 boblerjul. 2014

We loved this mountain visit. It was such a fun day out.

No English signs or help meant a slight panic when we discovered the other people in our cable car all had oxygen containers tucked into their bags and we had none and were on the way up. They also didn't speak English so it was a nerve racking ride.

The hyperbaric chamber at the top wasn't so assuring either. However we could breathe fine and the view was lovely. Most of the Chinese sucked away on their oxygen containers. They do also sell oxygen at the top. The mountain is pretty high around 5500metres (18300ft) and you can climb quite a long way from the cable car up stairs although the air is thin and we did get a headache.

The marble vomit bowls at the bottom are a nice touch as the cable car does descend very fast and many people used these and some also missed. We seemed ok also and didn't vomit.

Despite all if this we had an awesome day and I would highly recommend this mountain visit to everyone. There is something the Chinese do very well and its let people explore their own limits. I would go back! We would all go back. Such a fun day out.

We then went on to Blue Moon Valley on the bus which was stunning - words can't describe the beauty.

The cable ride was very exciting to bring us up there. The view is beyond expectations freezing and it was so cold that both my hands were numb. We brought our oxygen canister to our breathing luckily everything went well. Highly recommended to visit l for will come again. Extremely miracle!!

What an amazing trip. Words cannot describe this experience. It is a must do if in Lijiang. We booked with a local tour company through our hotel. It was very easy. Get the oxygen canisters it makes the journey up much easier. In August you don't need the heavy coats.

The views at the top are worth seeing but we wish we would have gotten there earlier to avoid the crowds. We got to the cableway (it is very needed) around 4 pm and waited 40 minutes to go up and 30 minutes to come back down. There are many platforms and the stairs are in decent condition. There are also lots of photo opportunities for the altitude markers. It takes a lot of energy to get to the top platform and it is worth the struggle.

We couldn't find a bus or transport provider on our own as the places we found online were closed. Our hotel helped arrange a private tour and we paid 380 RMB each for transport to/from, Blue Moon Valley, water, lunch, cable car tickets, park pass, grassland stop, down parka rental and oxygen cannisters. We found our guide very helpful and she constantly communicated with us over WeChat which made our trip very efficient! The lunch was quite good and had yak meat jerky and a chicken hotpot.

We found that in July the parka is not needed and it is a pain to lug it around all day. They convinced us to take it because it might rain at the top of the mountain. I think a rain jacket would be enough just in case. We were only allowed one oxygen canister each but our guide said she could get us more. My wife felt the oxygen cannister was helpful while I saved mine in the case of any struggle. I found I didn't need it and friends that have gone previously also said they didn't use theirs as well.

Our hotel advised that a cable car was needed and tried to help us book through the Lijiang Tourism Application. The photo registration worked for my Asian wife the first time but it took 34 tries for me and I had to stand under a fluorescent light to be at my whitest and pastiest in order for it to take. I still couldn't register for cable car and park passes and the hotel staff and I figured it is likely because we are foreigners. You can get cable car tickets at the entrance to the park but Chinese can by the day in advance so it could be tough. We felt having a guide ensured we could get on a cable car but a little late.

Buy a bottle of water before the cable car if needed. The water bottles at the top were expensive and small. Drinks and snacks at the upper station were expensive as well and may not quench your thirst - 15 RMB coconut milk, red bull, monster energy drink, etc. There are also opportunities to dress up in traditional clothes and take a picture with a yak or llama.

Aside from the long cable car waits and crowded busses I thought it was worth the trip. Expect to spend 2 to 3 hours waiting for cable cars, struggling for breath and climbing the stairs.

We took a taxi ordered by our hotel for 200 rmb. Tickets were available with no problems. No long lanes to bus or cableway. Maybe because the weather was not so good. But up was really fantastic, oxygen can is needed. It's difficult to climb at this altitude. We were very satisfied with the visit.

We got the 101 tourist bus from near the waterwheel in Lijiang Old Town (follow signs for 'bus station', it will take you to a bus stop). The bus was 15RMB per person one way. On the way the bus will stop and someone will board and you'll buy the entrance ticket for 100RMB. Then the bus will continue and drop you at the tourist centre. Once you go through the maze of shops and restaurants you can buy cable car tickets and go to the shuttle bus terminal. The cable car up the mountain was 120RMB, but as it was a cloudy day we didn't feel it was worth it.
We rode the shuttle bus (20RMB) to the mountain cable car stop, but stayed on and then it dropped us at Blue Moon Valley. We had a nice walk around the lake with some good views of the mountain. But the lake is artificial so it feels a bit strange and fake. We thought we could ride the shuttle bus to the Spruce and Yak meadows to see some more views, but were told we could only go if we had a cable car ticket for those areas, so ended up going back to the visitor centre.
Overall, we felt underwhelmed and disappointed. I'm sure once upon a time this was a beautiful place, but now it's so commercialised it's lost it's beauty. It's full of tourists and buses, not as peaceful as you'd hope. On a clear day I think the experience would be better.

Second time visiting this marvelous mountain and this time is a different feel.
This time was raining so when went up to the peak was actually snowing and quite heavy, compared to last time which we could view perfectly the scenes at the top. Nonetheless, there is always a special feeling when we reaching the ground on the top from the cable car, maybe is that feeling that brings me back to Lijiang again...
