The place is really amazing. It has spectcular views of the mountains. They have pony rides but does not look safe to ride them. The terrain is a bit rough.

Kashmir was my dream destination. I was so happy when we stepped out of plane at Srinagar airport weather was cool. But all the happiness shattered when we visited Pahalgam a scenic village but people there are very cunningly force you to go for horse riding to visit Mini Switzerland. And they say that is the only way to go to that place. But it's not true. There is a trek path, which has stone benches also along the path. The horse ride terrain is horrible, they put the tourists lives at risk just to earn some money. The fellow who walked along side the horse said that it os good if we fall here and anyone falls and dies during Amarnath horse riding thwy will reach heaven directly!!!??😰😰😰 The Government should so something to regularise these horse riding with proper well maintained paths. Should do something for the protection of the tourists. And a word of caution, bwware of drivers, horse rides and the vendors who will not allow you to sit and enjoy the serene nature.

Mulberry jam, apricot, Apple and Fig jams are very yummy.

Hotel bookings are bad, the name of the hotel we stayed was Royal heritage resort but it was a homestay, in a residential area!!! He said breakfast nas dinner included, everyday bread was the breakfast....

Pahalgam Heritage Resort was good, its not a resort though. But clean and spacious.

We started with our kids all four of us at 9 am, the ponies were horribly expensive and the adventurous pony ride is hell risky in those narrow, rock-strewn, gravelly, mucky and hard path. The valley is so steep at the sides with unbalanced ponies bouncing in a jig over the edges of the path. Once we reach after 90 mins of hard ride., the scene we see over there will be similar to that of what we see at many other places in Kashmir., viz., Gulmarg, Betaab valley etc., Nothing specific or special., its just normal green lush valley and field with mountains around ladden with snow., better to have some other options rather than to waste 3 to 4 hrs of valuable itinerary.
Note: Better to avoid the pony ride.,

Not Worth the Risk.

Mini Switzerland is decent in summers, but the horse ride experience is terrible.

1) they provide one helper every 2-3 horses, so majority of times you would be handling the horse by yourself.

2) The area was overcrowded, the paths are not built for such long queue of horses at once. Due to overcrowding, you will constamtly keep bumping into other horses, which in unpleasnat and scary at times.

3) The route is very narrow and often very dangerous (no ledge svaing you froma steep fall), many a times the horse was walking on the edge of a steep fall. The only thing saving you from serious injury is the faith that horse knows what its doing and hope that trainer has fed and rested the horse.
4) There is no safety gear, if you loosen your grip or horse slips, that is it for you.

5) Worst thing is they will overpromise and underdeliver. I paid extra to go through a route that was less steep (deno valley route), but while returning they made an excuse and took through a very steep and narrow path, so that they can reach 15 mins earlier and take another set of tourists.

When you reach the top its nice. But again 80% of your 3 hour trip would be on horseback - up and down.

Yes, 100s of people do it everyday and retuen safe, but that doesnt justify the unnecessary risk.

If at all you want to go to mini switzerland, trek your way. Will take a couple of hours, but definitely will feel safer. This is more suitable for younger people.

I loved the Chandanwari cab ride. So beautiful. And betaab valey was good too. Took us 2.5 hours to cover both valleys

The valley is nice looking but the passage is in bad condition and falling down from pony is not new so be careful. We treck and it took 3 hours to reach but couldn't enjoy as we were tired and took 2 hours to come back.

Most pathetic experience ever of all the places I have been to. Life threatening to summarise in one word. Mucky, dangerous and steep climb with over priced horses. And nothing extraordinary at the top. Much better views here in Kashmir then this one.

Baisaran is touted as “mini Switzerland” by the taxi drivers, locals, and the pony owners. It is no doubt beautiful, but you have many other similar meadows in Kashmir.
While one can also trek to Baisaran, more than 90% chose to go there using the pony/horses. And that horse ride is what makes it a terrible experience. The path is fairly narrow and steep, and to make matters worse is full of muck and horse-poop. So if you are imagining a picturesque ride up to Baisaran, add anxiety, panic, foul smell, horse-traffic-jams to your expectations.
Given that it’s so steep and narrow, and if it has rained then very slippery too - all of it put together makes it a very risk ride. Certainly not recommended for anyone, but particularly avoidable if you are travelling with children, and elderly.
The million dollar question - is the risk worth it ? It’s a resounding No. You’ll have far better or similar views minus all the risk and unhygienic conditions.

And finally a note on prices - depends on tourist season, your group size and your negotiation skills. We were a family of four (with a 5 yr old), and paid 2400/horse for 3 horses.

This place is extremely overhyped. From the beginning the entire place was stinking . The way up was extremely steep, overcrowded and the path was also very narrow. Due to rain in the past few days the path was also very wet and covered with potholes. Many horses also slipped. The view was nice at the top in Kashmir, but overall we can see better views in Gulmarg, Sonmarg and Srinagar. Not recommended for kids and elderly people.

We visited during the first week of May 2024.

There are two ways to reach Baisaran Valley: one starts from just opposite Pahalgam Club & Resort (this is much better compared to the other way), and the other starts from the market (avoid this route as it's not recommended). Whichever way you choose, the pony owner may ask you to return via a steeper road that leads to the market or taxi stand.

The Pony Union has incorrectly listed 6 points to cover during the pony ride, but ultimately, all routes lead to Baisaran Valley, which is a table-top area surrounded by mountains and beautiful meadows. The pony ride should cost around Rs. 1000 per horse, with an additional Rs. 100 or more as a tip to the caretaker accompanying you, according to your discretion.

Note: I have not taken videos of the return pony journey, which is much riskier than the onward journey. Many accidents happen on this return route only.
EnRoute views & pony ride is experience in itself but not recommended for senior citizens & young children if they’re scared of horse riding.

You may also enjoy activities like Zorbing (Rs. 300/ride), bungee jumping for kids (Rs. 300/child), zip line (Rs. 350/ride), and have snacks like Maggie, tea, coffee, etc.
Note: The road to Baisaran Valley is generally muddy, and mud will cover your feet. It is advisable to cover your shoes with rubber covers to avoid muddy feet. (See our photo for reference.)

The horse caretaker will stop at a girl holding a White pigeon or white rabbit 🐇. If you take a photo, they will ask for Rs. 50 to Rs. 100 as a charge. (You can say NO photo if you do not want to get charged.)

It is advisable to carry a water bottle and your snacks if you’re vegetarian.

If you're in Pahalgam for just one night, it's best to prioritize visiting the places mentioned below before considering Baisaran Valley, also known as Mini Switzerland:

1. Betaab Valley: Surrounded by flowing rivers, mountains, and picturesque landscapes, Betaab Valley offers a serene ambiance. Entry fee to the Betaab Valley is about Rs. 100 for adults and Rs. 30 for children. You can travel by taxi or cab from the Pahalgam taxi union stand.

2. Chandanwari: Here, you can enjoy playing in the snow. The road from Pahalgam to Chandanwari is fairly flat and easily traveled by car. Taxis or cabs can be hired from Pahalgam for a round trip. It's essential to rent gumboots from nearby stalls as the snow can be slippery.

3. Aru Valley: The journey from Pahalgam to Aru village, although hilly, can be traveled by car and offers breathtaking views of the valley, beautiful meadows, mountains, and river.

4. Pahalgam Club & Resort: Relax beside the flowing Lidder River on a wooden deck and enjoy snacks or tea and coffee at the restaurant. Entry to Pahalgam Club & Resort requires a stay booking, but you may request permission to visit.

Note: You must hire a taxi from the Pahalgam taxi stand to travel to Betaab Valley, Chandanwari, and Aru Valley.

If you've already visited these places and have some spare time, you may consider exploring Baisaran Valley. However, please note that access to Baisaran Valley is limited to pony rides or treks, which are not suitable for children or senior citizens. The pony ride to Baisaran Valley involves a tough, steep, and risky climb, and many accidents have occurred due to the steep and dangerous terrain.

We stayed in Pahalgam for 3 nights and visited all the places. If you have any questions or need any advice to make your travel plan, please ask, and I will revert to your queries.
