Although difficult to visit without own transportation it is definitely worth going there. Beautiful monastery with a lot of local pelgrims.

Monastery of Saints David and Constantine
is the second most important Kutaisi monastery after the famous Gelati. It is dedicated to the martyrs Saints David and Constantine, local rulers of the 8th century who were tortured for refusing to convert to Islam during the Arab invasion. Mozamet means "martyrs" in translation. Mozameta is separated from Gelati by a canyon and a hill. The monastery's buildings date from the 11th century, with subsequent alterations and restorations. The ark with the relics of David and Constantine is located in the main temple, on an elevation to the right of the entrance. You should go around the ark three times, bowing your head under a specially low-made tunnel, and without touching the ceiling or walls (you can make a wish, but only one that will not hurt other people).

The Georgian monastery is connected to the brothers of the noble Argveti family, David and Constantine, who organized a rebellion against the Arab occupiers in the 8th century. This place is beautiful. There are legends about this place. I recommend a visit.

Three weddings were going on so it was fantastic to see the men in their traditional dress and hear the religious service. The chapel is small but there is a working water well and the setting amidst the forested hills is lovely. No explanations in English, no guides, so visitors are left wondering...

A beautifully situated monastery with a legend and cult of Christian martyrs. From Kutaisi you can take a taxi or take advantage of the offer of many tourist agencies as part of a tour of places of worship.

Motsameta Monastery is located about six kilometers northeast of the center of Kutaisi in a beautiful place. It is located on a high and narrow rocky cape, which is washed on three sides by the Tskaltsiteli River (a tributary of the Rioni), that is, it is located in its bend. It turns out that the monastery is located on a peninsula and it is possible to get into it only through a narrow isthmus along which a stone-paved path runs.
Given the extraordinary beauty of the place where the monastery is located, it is possible to photograph all this, that is, the monastery entirely on the cape, from afar only, probably, with a drone. It would be wise to make an observation deck with a view of it in some place at a distance from the monastery. Cut down the wild vegetation and then the problem would be solved. But somehow they didn’t think of it.
In the 7th - 8th centuries, there was a small settlement on the site where the monastery is now located. There was a church in the settlement.
During the Arab conquest of Transcaucasia in 735-737, this settlement was destroyed. The armed resistance and struggle against the Arabs in this area was led by Argvetians named David and Constantine. They were captured and, for refusing to convert to Islam, tortured and executed. Their bodies were buried in a church destroyed by the Arabs on a cliff, where the Motsameta monastery is now located.
After some time, a new church was built on the site of the ancient church where David and Constantine were buried. However, there is some debate as to when exactly this happened. This was either in the 11th century, or the 14th century, or in the 16th century. The generally accepted version boils down to the construction of the church in the 11th century, perhaps simply because it would be older. The monastery was founded at the same time. The name of the monastery Motsameta literally means "place of martyrs."
The church built by King Bagrat was domeless, with vaults and was something like a one-nave basilica.
In the mid-19th century, the Motsameta monastery was thoroughly rebuilt. The work was carried out from 1844 to 1865. In 1846 the bell tower was built. The church was rebuilt into a domed one (that is, it had a dome), the roof and part of the walls were redone, as well as the altar partition.
In 1923, the Motsameta monastery was closed. It is very interesting that thirty years later, in 1954, thanks to the efforts of a number of clergy of the Georgian Orthodox Church, the Motsameta monastery was restored. It was renovated, a road was built to it, water supply was installed, and electricity was connected.
It is even more interesting that with the restoration of the monastery, the remains of Saints David and Constantine were returned to it (at the same time, they were preserved in the museum and were not lost or mixed up).
Now in the Motsameta monastery there is a church of Saints David and Constantine, a bell tower, two stone towers, a stone fence, a wooden bridge, an administrative building and other buildings.
In addition, the gate and the tower standing next to it have been preserved, about 100-200 meters from the closely clustered buildings of the monastery.
The entrance to the monastery territory is through a stone gate, which is a semicircular arch in the wall. To the right and left of the gate are the remains of stone walls or rocks. The passage is only for humans (well, a horse can still pass).
Here I will once again touch on photographing the monastery. We can say with confidence that one of the main negative features of the monastery is that it is very difficult to photograph. You can approach it only from one side - where the gate is located, but these gates cover the entire monastery and if you manage to remove something, then only the gate itself, although they look good. There is very little space inside the monastery behind the gates and there are almost no shooting positions.
After the gate there will be a slightly humped wooden bridge covered with a gable roof on top. Interestingly, in the 19th century there was a drawbridge there.
On the other side, the bridge is adjacent to a two-tier stone tower, rectangular at the base, through which a passage in the form of a semicircular arch also leads on the first tier.
If you look closely at the tower, you can see that the masonry of the walls of the second tier differs from the masonry of the first tier and, apparently, the tower was rebuilt. Presumably it was built in the 16th - 17th centuries, but it was built on an earlier foundation.
After passing through the tower you find yourself in the stone-paved courtyard of the monastery. Here you can already see that you are on the top of a cliff on a specially equipped platform, from the edges of which mountain slopes go down. A stone fence was erected along these edges.
Now the Church of Saints David and Constantine at its base has a rectangular shape, close to a square, into which the cross is inscribed. The church was built along the south-north and east-west axes, unconventionally for Christian churches. This was probably due to the lack of space on top of the rock. Traditionally, Christian churches are built exactly according to the cardinal directions, and near the eastern wall there is an altar, an iconostasis, and an altar partition. But the Church of Saints David and Constantine seems to be rotated 45 degrees.
The interior of the temple and its interior decoration are predominantly modern. The temple is decorated with paintings, but most of them were done in 2009-2011. Old paintings have been preserved in fragments only in the apse conch. They date back to the 14th - 16th centuries. These paintings have become very worn out and from afar nothing can be seen what was depicted there, but it is believed that Jesus Christ, the Most Holy Theotokos, John the Baptist, seraphim and cherubim.
It seems like there is a crypt preserved in the church. The entrance to it is located somewhere in the corner of the church to the right of the altar partition, probably in the sacristy. The stairs lead to a room under the church, from where you can enter the crypt. This is the most ancient part of the temple, remaining from the very first church, about which nothing is now known at all, and it is believed that it was there that David and Constantine were originally buried.
At the south-eastern wall of the temple (to the right of the entrance) there is a platform at a height of about 70-80 centimeters from the floor. A reliquary with the relics of David and Constantine was placed on the platform, placed in a glass sarcophagus, and a canopy was installed above it. An icon with Saints David and Constantine is hung on the wall above the shrine, and on its sides are two heads of lions. Five-step stairs lead to the platform, and a hole was made under it so that believers could pass under the shrine with the relics. This is such a superstitious religious tradition.
On the southwest side of the church and about two meters from its wall there is a two-tier bell tower built in 1846.
To the south of the church there is another two-tier stone tower, rectangular at the base. Somewhere next to it there is a passage towards the peak of the cape. There are a dozen more houses on the cliff there. Adjacent to the tower is a cell building built in 1960.
In general, there were few people visiting the Motsameta monastery. It itself is small and simply cannot accommodate many people. Here you especially feel comfort, calm, silence, and tranquility. And the Motsameta monastery is not like the Georgian monasteries where I have been. These stone-paved paths, narrow passages, bridges, and gates create the atmosphere of medieval Italy or France. I have not been directly to the cities and monasteries of Italy and France with medieval architecture, but from the documentaries and feature films I watched, I felt exactly such an atmosphere. Such medieval Georgian Italy. Perhaps that is why I liked the Motsameta Monastery as a single object the most of the monasteries we visited during this trip.

Великолепное тихое, святое место. Над алтарем даже сохранилась древняя фреска. Очень рекомендую к посещению это намоленное место . Там даже можно загадать свое самое заветное желание, поклонившись мощам святых.

Beautiful monastery in the mountains. Calm and quiet place to focus. Recommended to wear moderate clothes and if not prepared, pick scarves at the entrance, they are free of charge as the entrance.
