Hard work but we’ll worth the trip. Thousand steps even when using the cable car but beautiful views at the top.
I would recommend this on cooler days

Enter Yen Tu area and you are immediately in a tranquil place , away from the cities’ hussel and bustle. It can be a very calming and relaxing for the mind with beautiful nature, fresh air and so many different birds chirping around. The way to the top is tough- it is some serious climbing but not impossible. It is an excellent exercise.
We went in April when it was drizzling and at the top there was a thick fog and wind but it was all the more mystical and cool to do. There are hardly any foreigners there and in fact hardly any people so it is really a place where you can slow down & enjoy the surroundings.

Very big religious site with a bit of everything and nothing. Visited in January 2022 with absolutely no tourist so its great but sad at the same time. The walk to the top is nice with fresh and cold air. Staff all the way is very friendly and helpful.

Such a nice place to calm yourself at the center of Vietnam's Buddhist Park. If not, even just a hike up the mountain is enough to refresh yourself, specially in Northern Vietnam where the pollution is quite serious.

A little out of the way for the average foreign tourist but very well visited by VN nationals. Even though it is quite close (50km) to Ha Long, the public transport is easier from Hanoi or Haiphong. Originally a buddhist retreat for one of the early kings of Vietnam (think 13th Century), the site has seen a complete make over, with a five star hotel at the bottom, restaurants, cable cars etc.
The summit holds the Dong Pagoda and originally it was a six thousand step trek to the 1km high peak. Reaching it was said to bestow good fortune on the pilgrims who achieved the not inconsequential feat and has atracted supplicants for centuries.
With the new makeover, you can reach the peak with two cable car rides and a couple of steep stair runs of about 500 meters each. Just be warned, they are steep and the top cable car will see you sailing blindly through clouds.
Many small temples in the region, as well as a national park, of which Yen Tu is the main attraction but by no means the only. You can do Yen Tu in a (very busy) day but if you have the time to see a very scenic and historic part of Vietnam, the Yen Tu area would be well worth the effort
Main issue is that the only hotel on the site is a USD 100 a night affair, otherwise you are probably best to base your self in the very average hotels in nearby Uong Bi

Yen Tu is a holy site to most Vietnamese as it is the founding place for Truc Lam Zen, Vietnam's home grown variant of Buddhism followed by millions. Founded in the C13th by a Marcus Aurelius type warrior-priest-king Tran Nhan Tong, for centuries the site has been a auspicious pilgrimage to reach the kilometer high peak of the mountain. The six kilometers or so of winding stone paths up a glorious wilderness scattered with holy relics and temples bears the promise of good fortune and luck for the following year.
Very little of the original structures remain but have been built and rebuilt over the centuries due to damage from the climate and the various wars that have raged through Vietnam over the centuries (if you think the American war is the only cataclysmic event in Vietnam, you need to read the history a little more).
These days, the harsh climb has been tempered somewhat by two long cable car rides, a 5 star luxury hotel complex at the foot and a lot of waystations and scenic platforms to view the stunning wilderness that surrounds the hallowed peak.
You should plan to spend the entire day there as it really is worth the visit and not to be rushed to some tour group itinerary. I found it difficult to find a tour from Halong Bay that did not included several meal breaks and an arrival at the mountain at 1pm so I hired a Grab for the day. I believe the trip from Haiphong or Hanoi is easier, even though those places are more distant as there is no direct path from Halong. If the weather is good, a bike hire would be the way to go.
Paths can be slippery, even if you do the cable car trip (which, unless you are on a pilgrimage is the way to go) but even then, the link between the two cable stations and the final ascent to the Dong Pagoda are steep and you should be in reasonable physical condition.
Cold at the top but due to the strenuous climb, my thin nylon parka was enough. That will vary with personal acclimatization but the peak is a kilometer up and you will be walking in the clouds, literally.
The whole area includes many other temples and a wildlife/wilderness reserve which is not part of the Yen Tu park itself. As others have said, way off the beaten track for most western tourists but a stunning experience if you make the effort.

We will be in Halong Bay for one long day. It has been suggested to visit Ba Vang Pagoda or Truc Lam Giac Tam Zen Monastery. But I wonder if Yen Tu is more authentic and interesting. What is your opinion?

The easyest way to go to yen tu from cat ba is by motorbyke. Take thé mornig ferry to tuan chau ( neer halong city) ans ride to yen to ( about 50 km less than 2 hours)
