Nice hike down; a bit strenuous on the way back up.

We came on a sunny but foggy Saturday in early November. We needed jackets on the walk down to the lighthouse but ditched them for the rather strenuous climb back up. There is not much to do at the bottom except to enjoy the view. There is a small information center at the midway point. You do get a little bit of the history there and along the pathway. Note: They will close if the winds are too strong. Bathrooms at the top and the midway point but not at the bottom.

Point Reyes is such a beautiful viewing point. On our last visit, the lighthouse was closed due to weather conditions so it was quite saddening but I have visited already before so it was fine. Would recommend to plan out your travel if this isin your California bucketlist.

Spectacular views

If you're a horror film fan, this was where they shot images for John Carpenter's, The Fog; of course we had to experience it. Unfortunately, we could not walk down the steps to the lighthouse because of the high winds even on a beautiful October day. You will have to walk a distance from the parking area to a space above the lighthouse but it's beautiful.

Fun spot! Whale watching opportunity.

We loved this place though it is a bit out of the way. The drive was very pretty. The spot itself has (reportedly) about 300 steps. To be honest it sounds worse than it is. There are places to stop if you need. At the light house there is also a bench however the view from it is poor in comparison to where you can stand to view the waves crashing against the rocky shores -and cliff (very cool). The lighthouse is small but interesting nonetheless. You can see a variety of birds and native plants in the area which is always a plus for me. Finally, I’d you have a clear day and not a lot of wind, you may be as lucky as us to spot whales from the lighthouse. They were too far out for us to get a good look but we felt very lucky nonetheless!

Yes, it’s very cool

It’s an easy walk to center and then ya get the stairs.
Parking is free. Paved road easy for young old, families and strollers.
12:30. Park down the road. Lots of us had the same idea on a Sunday
Stairs down are easier than the stairs back up. Doable for everyone—take it easy.
12:45. Lighthouse down the 313 stairs. All about saving lives. Imagine how hard it was to build back in 1870!

Picturesque Location But Be Aware It Can Be Foggy

We drove out to visit Point Reyes Lighthouse, but it was very foggy. Point Reyes is one of the foggiest places in the world. If you are at the top of the stairs that go down to the lighthouse and it is foggy you often cannot see the lighthouse. The Lighthouse elevation is often below the fog, but the staircase is up higher in the fog. Also be aware that the lighthouse has specific hours when you can take the stairs down. Check the NPS website for up to date information.

Windiest place on the West Coast!

Quite a drive out to the lighthouse across many cattle farms. Worth the drive to see the point. If you want to hike down to see the lighthouse up close, it's about 300 steps down and 300 back up! This is a very windy place - dress accordingly. Neat place to see.

Amazing place!

This is awesome! Visited on a Monday in May 2023 and there were flowers everywhere. From the lighthouse parking lot, the half mile hike to the lighthouse gift shop and visitor center is fairly easy and presents beautiful vistas in all directions. At that point, you arrive at the top of the 313 steps down to the lighthouse. A bit daunting I must say! Like the grand canyon, remember that if you go down, you must walk back up the steps. I walked all the way down. Be sure to bring a coat as the wind is often quite cold. The lighthouse is both beautiful and historically interesting. A nice ranger inside the lighthouse talked about its history AND its mechanics...apparently it's just like a clock. She was super helpful and answered all my questions. The views from here were spectacular, even though pretty much all I could see was the ocean. The hike back up was very refreshing. At 62, I felt pretty good hiking all the way up without stopping. But there are several benches to stop and rest on the way up if you need them. While the entire park is awesomely beautiful, the lighthouse was clearly the pinnacle of my visit.
