Imperdible.

Fo Guang Shan was definitely one of the highlights of my trip to Kaohsiung. I took the bus here from Kaohsiung which was easy and hassle free. You can easily spend the whole day here at Fo Guang Shan but we spent a solid half day here. Visit the museum, Buddha statue, temples, and everything else within the Fo Guang Shan area. Everything here is truly massive and beautiful. Highly recommend!

I visited this monastery after almost a whole day in the associated Fo Guang Shan Buddha Museum. It’s a working monastery, but it was late in the day when I visited, so it was quite quiet. The main thing to see as a tourist is the 120 metre tall golden statue of Buddha Amitabha on the rooftop platform, which also has 480 standing Buddhas, mostly arranged around the boundary of the walking paths and around the aforementioned giant statue. It’s quite a climb to the roof area, but the statues and views are worth it.

We visited the monastery on Tuesday when the museum with the large Buddha statue is closed and I must say that the choice was the best because in this way we dedicated a large part of the day to visiting this area well and instead the next day we returned visiting the museum in the morning. We also arrived here by taking the E02 bus which leaves from Kaohsiung station at a low cost. Free admission. There are maps to better visit the complex which is full of monasteries, various temples, veg restaurants, gardens, a standing Buddha statue etc. You can take photos, except in the internal rooms. The staff is very kind and helps you in any way.

Absolutely magical. Went on a Monday afternoon so there were very few people around, which was quite lucky. I think to get the full experience you should probably block out a few hours to just wander around and enjoy all there is to see.

Very large monastery, unique for its series of lateral pagodas that flank the avenue of the main building. Unfortunately, in the rooms where there are buddhas it is forbidden to take photos... volunteers will welcome you and are happy to accompany you and explain a few things to you...
There is an area where they make you take home as a souvenir a small strip of paper on which you can trace a wish in their characters.
There are two restaurants, vegetarian, one of which has a buffet that closes at 1pm.. we went to the à la carte one but we didn't like it..
We only saw the main area, in a couple of hours. There would also be another area I think with a museum..

We stayed overnight at this monastery in one of their accommodation blocks. The rooms are very simple and spartan, but also inconsistent: there's a phone, flat-screen TV, aircon, walk-in shower - but no WiFi signal and no toiletries or proper towels. Either be spartan, or be a proper hotel, one or the other. We had a superb evening meal in the Dining Room - absolutely delicious, lots of variety etc. And then we had the worst-ever breakfast of our tour - very poor. The monastery itself & grounds are very beautiful, as is the Buddha statue, guarded by hundreds of smaller Buddha statues, and the BUddhist graveyard. So a bit of a mixed bag, but on the whole an enjoyable visit.

I took the E02 bus from bay 3 bus station outside MRT Zouying station. TWD70 each way or use your Easycard.
This temple is one massive complex of buildings. Free entry. Quite hilly but they do provide a buggy service at what cost I don't know.
I visited the main shrine, the walk through museum, the garden area and the great buddha surrounded by many many life size buddha statues.
I probably could have stayed longer but the walking was taxing and I had to move on to the buddha museum.

To visitors cannot recommend: Restaurants and shops reminds of a shopping mall, too commercial, outside hundreds oft kitschy Buddhas, facility looks artificial, less spiritual…

The inside of the main building here compares favourably to the most impressive religious buildings I have ever seen, whether Catholic churches in Rome, Krakow and Vienna; temples in Thailand, Laos and Japan or mosques in Turkey, Oman or Brunei. It’s truly amazing, but no photos allowed! The vast interior is covered in statues of Buddha, as well as three beautiful large ones, and I can believe the thirty thousand number quotes by the super accommodating volunteer guides. The exterior is pretty incredible too and well worth seeing all of.

may i know which is the best time to visit this temple, morning or afternoon ? which is less crowded time ?
Skrevet 11. april 2019
Hello Anita,
The mornings are usually quieter and cooler, thanks.

(Apologies for the delay as I have been traveling). There are multiple holy shrines available to enter—in the main welcome hall building, on the grounds, and up the hill at the monastery. I would simply pose your question directly to the Foa Guang Shan staff. I hope this helps re-direct you for a more thorough and accurate answer.

Is Fo Guang Shan museum closed on Tuesday? If so is there anything else to visit at FSG? Thanks
Skrevet 9. desember 2018
Hello, Although the Museum is closed on Tuesdays, the rest of Fo Guang Shan is open. There are many shrines to visit at the Monastery, and many spiritual experiences to try.

Can do one day trip to Kaoshiung? No stay, go back to hotel taipei.. Thanks
Skrevet 27. november 2018
It is advisable to arrange accommodation in Kaohsiung if you wish to visit Fo Guang Shan, since it will take at least the entire day to see it all.

Hi, Mark. we will arrive by ship on Feb 1 and am interested in this attraction. can you elaborate a bit and what there is to see, as well as best way to get there (and Buddha Museum). thanks for any info you can offer.
Skrevet 29. august 2018
Hi Tiger
I’ve been a month at Fo Guang monastery and seen it. So you have to prioritize according to your interests.
The Buddha museum is impressive in size and shows the huge achievement of the founder and the venerables in a very approachable way for a large audience as well as it is a beautiful and impressive temple.
Visiting the monastery you’ll meet the venerables who participated in this achievement over the last 50 years in their daily routine and environment. At the monastery are museums as well by the way.
If you have time I would advice you to stay overnight at the lodge (you can make a reservation) and rise at 5.30 with the sound of the bell & drum and see and hear the morning chant at the main shrine. It will touch your heart.

I am sorry for my late response, i do not know as my group hired a driver. If you still need info I would ask the concierge at a large, area (Kaosiung or Tainan) hotel.

How to get to Fo Guang Shan from Liuhe Night Market?
Skrevet 28. mars 2018
Hello, you may walk to the Meili Dao KRT Station, take the red line to Zuoying THSR station, exit the station where the buses stop, and take either the Hafo Express of Eda Shuttle right to Fo Guang Shan.
