We stayed overnight at this monastery in one of their accommodation blocks. The rooms are very simple and spartan, but also inconsistent: there's a phone, flat-screen TV, aircon, walk-in shower - but no WiFi signal and no toiletries or proper towels. Either be spartan, or be a proper hotel, one or the other. We had a superb evening meal in the Dining Room - absolutely delicious, lots of variety etc. And then we had the worst-ever breakfast of our tour - very poor. The monastery itself & grounds are very beautiful, as is the Buddha statue, guarded by hundreds of smaller Buddha statues, and the BUddhist graveyard. So a bit of a mixed bag, but on the whole an enjoyable visit.

I took the E02 bus from bay 3 bus station outside MRT Zouying station. TWD70 each way or use your Easycard.
This temple is one massive complex of buildings. Free entry. Quite hilly but they do provide a buggy service at what cost I don't know.
I visited the main shrine, the walk through museum, the garden area and the great buddha surrounded by many many life size buddha statues.
I probably could have stayed longer but the walking was taxing and I had to move on to the buddha museum.

To visitors cannot recommend: Restaurants and shops reminds of a shopping mall, too commercial, outside hundreds oft kitschy Buddhas, facility looks artificial, less spiritual…

The inside of the main building here compares favourably to the most impressive religious buildings I have ever seen, whether Catholic churches in Rome, Krakow and Vienna; temples in Thailand, Laos and Japan or mosques in Turkey, Oman or Brunei. It’s truly amazing, but no photos allowed! The vast interior is covered in statues of Buddha, as well as three beautiful large ones, and I can believe the thirty thousand number quotes by the super accommodating volunteer guides. The exterior is pretty incredible too and well worth seeing all of.

This was the main attraction on our port day in Kaohsiung when I organized a group tour in a chartered bus for 34 passengers on our cruise. All our group members were excited and enjoyed their visits at this location. The Great Buddha was definitely attractive and the museum provided plenty of information for all visitors about the place. It was relaxing just wandering around even under the heat and ended with a lunch at the vegetarian restaurant.

There is actually two parts - the older Monastery and the newer Great Buddha Land otherwise known as Foguangshan Museum. Most people just visit the Great Buddha Land but you really need to allocate one whole day to visit both.

I was here yesterday as part of my pan-Taiwan tour. There was a prayer going on in the main hall and the chants were resonating around the monastery. It was astounding. The ambience. The atmosphere. The people. The monks were so kind - women wear black and men wear brown. This is also a university campus with halls and dedicated prayer rooms. It was so nice to walk around the massive place to see the different people engaging in their daily monasterical activities. The key piece is the massive golden statue of Buddha himself surrounded by many little ones. I could spend a day here and still come off wanting more. It is around half-anhour drive from the city.

禁止拍攝的地方就不要開放,如果覺得是私人禮佛誦經的聖地,開放自由參觀就是錯誤的決定,既然自由就不要限制拍攝,如有禁止就不算自由參觀

Fo Guang Shan is one of the largest Buddhist organisations in Taiwan. "Fo Guang Shan" means "Buddha's Light Mountain." The monastery is abour 40 minutes drive from Kaohsiung City. It is a famous Buddhist centre, and it welcomes visitors.

(Apologies for the delay as I have been traveling). There are multiple holy shrines available to enter—in the main welcome hall building, on the grounds, and up the hill at the monastery. I would simply pose your question directly to the Foa Guang Shan staff. I hope this helps re-direct you for a more thorough and accurate answer.

Hello, Although the Museum is closed on Tuesdays, the rest of Fo Guang Shan is open. There are many shrines to visit at the Monastery, and many spiritual experiences to try.

It is advisable to arrange accommodation in Kaohsiung if you wish to visit Fo Guang Shan, since it will take at least the entire day to see it all.
Guten Tag, wie haben Sie den österreichischen Mönch gefunden, bzw die Führung gebucht? Ich suche verzweifet nach einem englisch, deutsch oder französischsprachigen Guide. Vielen Dank und beste Grüsse

Hi Tiger
I’ve been a month at Fo Guang monastery and seen it. So you have to prioritize according to your interests.
The Buddha museum is impressive in size and shows the huge achievement of the founder and the venerables in a very approachable way for a large audience as well as it is a beautiful and impressive temple.
Visiting the monastery you’ll meet the venerables who participated in this achievement over the last 50 years in their daily routine and environment. At the monastery are museums as well by the way.
If you have time I would advice you to stay overnight at the lodge (you can make a reservation) and rise at 5.30 with the sound of the bell & drum and see and hear the morning chant at the main shrine. It will touch your heart.
what time the last trip from qishan kaohsiung to gwanmiao tainan?TIA

I am sorry for my late response, i do not know as my group hired a driver. If you still need info I would ask the concierge at a large, area (Kaosiung or Tainan) hotel.
