If you want to see lots of cats, do not go. During our visit we encountered only a handful lazy felines. Compared to Athens or other Greek towns were you literally stumble over cats and more or less have to shake them off after petting, this is not worth the long drive.

It was wet rainy day when we visited. The location of the village in the mountains, with a flowing river is nice. The village itself is pretty run down, and apart from the cat themed cafes, and a scattering of cats (~10-12 across the entire village is what we saw) that you can pet and try to feed (they mostly refuse), there isn't much else to do. The overpass across the railway track is under renovation, so a temporary bridge is in use. We were told that the original overpass had quite some cats and themed games/activities that we didn't get to experience. There is an exhibit of the coal mining station (a model), with a cafe and very clean toilets.

Visit this place because i like cat, its easy to go even alone from Taipei and free. A little bit rain, so the place really calm. Many cats live here, you can give them cat-food or just playin around.
The cat village located upstair the train station, came not at weekend so only several tourists came. You can bought cat souvenirs, eat at cafe, etc. The place not very well cared, but its okay because the ambience really different from city crowd.

Place sounded cool in theory but really it’s just a bunch of stray cats that get free food just laying out on the streets. The cafes have cute cat themed food which is kinda cool. Not sure it’s worth a visit

We loved seeing the cats as we are cat people. As a sight seeing destination for many people this may only rate as 3 star but we had a better time because of the staff at the train station.
We needed to ask for help in working out our way back and one of them took off and actually asked the train going back to Taipei to wait for us! The other staff member then quickly helped us scan our Easy Cards and said "run it's waiting". Fantastic fun and we appreciated their consideration.
The village itself (bearing in mind we were there in the 'off' season) is quite run down but definitely worth a stop as it is something different to do.
The cafe there is worth visiting as the food was home made and delicious. The interior has interesting decor and very clean facilities. Definitely try their home made mains and make sure to at least order something to drink for each person at the table (not an unreasonable rule).
We took the mountain train with reserved seats for half the journey from Taipei Main Station - highly recommend this as the train got quite full. Seated gave us good views of the countryside. The connection is only via the local train so no reserved seats so we stood near the door so we could see the forests and rivers.
A lovely break from the city. Take snacks and drinks if you don't want to sit in a cafe.

Small place with lots of cats. Nothing much to do except pat cats, eat at some simple cafes. Most cafes are open on weekends only though, so please check or eat before coming here.

This place gives me the feeling the villagers were desperate for some tourism and given the history of the town I can understand that. There is a wonderful exhibition on coal mining but the subject matter wouldnt attract a lot of tourists. Apparantly there were some stray cats or outside cats and they made a thing out of it. The cats are friendly and undergo the massive amount of attention the get very well. No lashing out or hissing, when they get tired of you, they just run away. That said, like I have seen in Asia a lot, they feed the cats well (as do the tourists), but general medical care is lacking. Some of the cats seemed to have health problems, like massive tangles, cancer and urinary problems. Just the cats would probably get 2 stars, but the coal museum bumps it up. They explain everything very well and it is all in English too. It's a shame the subject matter doesnt interest a lot of people these days.

A beautiful, small mountain village with many cats and beautiful views. It can be done in under 2 hours.

It takes just over an hour from Taipei by train at each station. I saw cats relaxing everywhere, starting from the station building. There were lots of general stores, restaurants and sweet shops.
The hill was scorching hot with the sun beating down at 35°, so I escaped to 217 Cafe and found an oasis. I was able to relax with the stylish interior, general goods, delicious coffee and waffles. The mascot cat was tsundere at first, but by the end he had a cute thump.
I was bothered by the fact that some of the ruins looked abandoned.
The toilets in the station were still Japanese style, so I hope they will be improved as soon as possible. Also, the train timetable was difficult to understand.

This use to be a coal mining village overpopulated with cats. This is a must-go place for cat people like me. You can buy cat treats in the shops to feed the cats. The cats are just around the place so I suggest let them be. Some would want to play and some would just sleep or don't want to be bothered. These cats are used to tourists around but it's also good to respect their territory. They have cute shops that sell cat themed souvenirs. It's really a happy place for me since I love cats!

Hi deliriou5, most of the shops are opened by the residents and if there aren't any big local festive occasions or holidays, I suppose they will be opened everyday. The village is actually very small and most shops are located at the entrance of the train station just outside the village.
