The infrastructure was severely damaged in the April 2024 earthquake.
There is no shuttle bus service within the park at present, though the shuttles do still run from
Hualien bus station to the Visitor Centre and back. If you have a car or a scooter, you will be allowed to enter at several time slots - 10am, 1pm, 3pm. You apparently need to remain inside for 2 hours, except we found the exit gate open so could exit any time. You can travel on the roads but all the trails are closed.
They plan to have everything open by early 2025, however given the scale of damage, if this does happen, it’s likely to be with very reduced access and limited trails open. We didn’t bring an international drivers licence so couldn’t hire a vehicle unfortunately. But they let us walk in via the first tunnel and we did a loop on the roads back to the visitor centre.
Visiting on a moped would be the best option at present as the roads are almost completely devoid of traffic and there is a lovely quiet to be appreciated.
Despite not seeing much of the gorge due to being on foot, it was definitely still worth the visit.

When the water is running high, it works well. To be honest, walking is the greatest way to see Taroko Gorge. Admire the marble, sculpted over eons by the sea and polished to a brilliant sheen. Naturally, we owe a debt of gratitude to the veterans for ironing out the wrinkles and making Taroko Gorge what it is today.

Did a spectacular tour with Island Life Taiwan throughout Taroko Gorge. It is breathtaking! We never would have seen half of what we saw doing it ourselves, as there are traffic/construction stops that need to be timed perfectly. We enjoyed fantastic authentic food, and the sites in the Gorge are so amazing that pictures don’t do it justice. A perfect day!

Taroko Gorge has been on my list of places to visit for a while and it did not disappoint. Taroko Gorge was one of the most beautiful places I've been to. The dramatic cliffs, clear water, and stunning landscapes all made this national park one of my favorites. I did a tour here and hiked a few trails and visited a couple attractions. Everything we did was stunning. Highly recommended!

Natural marvel.
You can spend all day there, although the tour buses arrive around 2pm and the crowds can ruin the ambiance slightly.
Of note you can do this by bus without much hassle - the buses arrive about once and hour (although not always to schedule) and they take the Easy Card used in Taipei.

Taroko Gorge is one of Taiwan’s most interesting and scenic areas. We parked near the Shakadang Trail Head and walked along the river Shakadang for about 2 km where we had a picnic of street-food sausages which were being sold at the point. The path was cut into the side of the steep cliffs that form the gorge by the Japanese in 1940 as part of a system of damming the river to create hydro-electric power. We saw some stunning scenery, including rocks apparently made of pale gold, water of a rich colour owing to the minerals, interesting forest vegetation, an egret and a monkey. We were with one of the tour companies, but I'm afraid I don't know which one as it was booked for us by others.

It was the best day trip my partner and I had throughout our holiday in Taiwan. If you are up for some walks and looking for interesting-looking rocks, trees, and cliffs, this is the right place for you. We hired a tour guide to take us to the famous attractions. He is super helpful and speaks perfect English. He organised the itinerary and told us what to look at and enjoy at each attraction. He also took great photos! :) We thoroughly enjoyed our day in Hualien, thanks to our guide, Tony. This is his contact number on WhatsApp: +886 916 993 938.

We did a self driving tour with our two teen boys and they enjoyed it thoroughly. Beautiful landscape and many hiking trails to choose from. The locals are hospitable and respectful.

I visited on a tour, but unfortunately, there was road construction on the way, so I couldn't go to Tianxiang, the deepest part of the valley. Even though I went to the trouble of visiting, I could only go as far as Changchun Shrine, which is near the entrance. Therefore, I had to turn back after visiting Changchun Shrine, and I was unable to see the whole Taroko Gorge.

This gorge is really impressive. At the moment, only narrow time slots are possible due to construction work, so tourists crowd the paths at the side. But the view into the depths and to the dizzyingly high bridges is fantastic. It is worth walking along the edge of the gorge for as long as possible, even if the buses driving past on the side are a bit of a nuisance.

Hi, are there maps available for advance purchase for the gorge (or even in Taipei)?
Ideally I'd like to order one online so I can plan hikes before I get there.
Thanks for any thoughts.

Walking all the way through Taroko Gorge is difficult. I suggest that you get a mini-bus that stops along the way. Walking part of the way is a good idea, there are many things that are worth seeing.

To have more flexibilty & not be bound by the infrequent hop-on-hop-off bus schedule, can we use easycard on the 1133A & 302 buses for Taroko? How much does it cost 1).Hualien-Taroko Visitors Centre & 2).per ride using either bus within the park? Any recommendation for english speaking day tour from Hualien-Taroko?
Skrevet 10. oktober 2019
If you can get a few people together, sharing the price of a taxi gives you more flexibility. Our driver spoke good English and allowed us plenty of time to hike in the gorge. Taxi drivers near the main station are often touting for business.

Hi everyone, I am planning a solo trip and came across Taroko Gorge. While I do not drive, what are the best possible ways that I can get there? And is it possible to walk from Hualien station up to the gorge?
Skrevet 2. oktober 2019
Hi,
I covered this in my review. We went by bus.
Its pasted below.
Enough has been said already about this amazing and beautiful place. We travelled here by bus from Hualien and I’ll explain how.
The bus you need is 1133a. We took the bus from the station right next door Thanks to the train station, we bought tickets from the office next to the bus. The fare is 250 each to ride all day. The bus wasn’t even half full, we left around 9 am.
With the same ticket you can get on and off any of the 1133a buses. You are given a map so can get off at various places and back on along the route. Toilets are often. Food is available but expensive (150 for a coffee).
There is an app for the bus but this is as unreliable as the timetable. As a rule I’d say a bus per hour or so in each direction. There is some confusion as to which stops where but despite this it’s a fantastic way to explore the park.
Do your homework as to where you want to go and use Google maps to see where you are. We got off at Shakadang trail (loved it), Lushui (nice place but exhibits in Chinese only. There is a short trail here too which was nice. Bring a torch for the tunnel), and Yanzikou (Swallows Grotto) amazing views here. We were supposed to get out at Qixingtan on the way back but somehow the driver seemed not to pass it.

Hi TripAdvisors,
We're cycling in Taiwan from Taipei to Kaohsiung. I would really like to visit Taroko gorge for a day or two along the way but have reservations about the road up from Hualien.
We are reasonably fit 30 year olds but are not professional cyclists. Can anybody offer any advice or reassurance as to how steep and strenuous the road is? Has anyone else managed it without prior experience or training and, if so, how long might it take?
Thanks
Sam

It is a long road up from Hualien on a bike. Even once you get to Taroko Gorge it is not bike friendly. We are hikers.

Looking for updated info for bike rental near Taroko Gorge.
Name of bike shop / website / phone number.
Hope to squeeze in 1 day of riding as my partner doesn’t ride.
Skrevet 14. august 2019
They are all pretty much the same. There are several shops at the park's entry, so just chose any of them.

We are supposed to go to Taroko George next week and Accu weather forecast for that day is : "Cloudy, showers bringing heavy rainfall in the afternoon". The "heavy rainfall in the afternoon bothers me". I don't know if it will be worth to do the tour considering our safety. So should we push through with the trip or not?
Thank you.
Skrevet 16. desember 2018
Yes, provided you have wet weather gear with you. When it rains in Taiwan, it really does rain! But footpaths are good on the trail through the gorge, so you should have few problems. Hope this helps.

Thank you BlueMeow. Any possible recommended trips replacing Taroko just in case? I'm looking at a full day tour, with nature; we'll be coming from Taipei; I don't know what will fit in a Dec trip.
