Location that exudes spirituality. Special occasion on August 15, 2023 with the Holy Mass officiated by the Cardinal, Bishop of Pristina and various priests from different countries. Advise.

Although the village of Letnica is not as vibrant and livable as it used to be, the magnificent Church of the Black Madonna still stays to remind the visitors of the glory of this unusual village. The Church became really popular in recent years, due to the fact that Mother Teresa spent some time here and, as it is believed, she had an epiphany at this very place. The inside of the church is very interesting. If you're travelling to southeastern Kosovo, make sure to visit Letnica village.

Where St. Mother Teresa got her call to become a nun. This is a beautiful church in the Kosovar countryside. Certainly worth the short drive out.

I served here near the start of 2000. It was just after the air war but while violence was still on the ground as Albanian groups continued to coordinate revenge attacks within the Serbian villages. We'd first taken a CH-47 helicopter from Macedonia and landed near the Kosovo Police station in Urosevec/Farizi, perhaps 300 meters East beside the soccer field. The building served as our Tactical Operations Center (TOC), but had previously served a similar goverment/policing role during Tito's rule (small prison on the bottom). The local Albanian said that Tito didn't seem to care about Albanian vs. Serbian, "He'd put you up in upper rooms and..." (That upper floor had a former torture room which we'd sealed off, but - at least in my mind - it still put forth an odor reminding me of the history surrounded our need base/habitation.) This experience preceded our moving the TOC to an old machine factory in Vita and my later arrival near this marvelous Letnica church.

I'd served as an infantryman and Tactical Operation Center (TOC) Sergeant within the HQ and C companies of 1/187th "Rakkasans" 3rd Brigade of the 101st Airborne (Air Assault) Division. I lead the operations side TOC shifts from Vitina and volunteered for extra patrols in order to be among the people, this second building also seemed void of joy. I enjoyed getting out to engage the Albanian and Serbian families - especially the children - and wanted to be present on the ground as well when they were in trouble, hoping to be also comfort them in their sorrows as best as able while also minimizing resentments which may have existed from the recent war...and the hundreds of years conflicts before it.

Perhaps in April/May 2000 Sgt. Stanley? Robinson and I drove the Battalion Commander - now BG (Ret.) Boyd Miles who'd recently returned after loosing his leg while helping to find anothers' lost grenade - to visit the furthest outposts. As for the Commander, he seemed to be a confident, humble and thoughtful individual who didn't need theatrics or intimidation to lead. He spoke somewhat softly during our briefing - which I believe gave the men confidence and I confidence and a greater desire to do our best work.

That Spring drive brought us to this Letnica church tucked up against the rural mountainside. The location, appearance and history of it and the small Letnica community provided a feeling which I'd been missing since dwelling in our former posts, they offered two very different sides of human capacities. The guys their seemed to be proud to guard that outpost. We served outside many of these very old Serbian/Roman Cathoic/Eastern Orthodox Christian churches as they were a common target for Albanian attacks via fire or by placing anti-tank mines on them. We lost a few of the churches and many Serbian homes due to operating constraints we'd been working with.

However, for some soldiers, this church was a special place in which we'd endure it received our efforts. It's marvelous to see it has still survived. Perhaps my bucket list will support a return trip while it is freely open and safe to visit.

The church is related to Mother Theresa and the priest gladly tells you about the history if you ask. Also the surrounding is very beautiful.

tipp: just below the church is a small serbian restaurant which sells very nice food
