Fantastic place to visit... My son and I was visiting the place july 2024. Very kind guide, we got a personel tour, cause we where the only 2 speaking english.
But it would have been nice knowing, that there is some rules for digging after amethyst.
"You can bring back home, one amethyst each person, if it fits nto your fist..."😉 The rest of them, belongs to the mine...
But once in a time experience, is also a good experience...
Have a nice trip, if you go to the mine....

FANTASTIC EXPERIENCE! The pendolino ride up the mountain to the fell made us feel like we were in a Dr. Seuss book. The trees were so whimsical, everything was blanketed in snow, and sheets of white as far as the eye could see. It's really hard to put into words what it felt like going up that mountain. The scenery alone is worth a visit, never mind the amethysts! LOL.
We had a great time here. The staff was super nice, too. We were able to take home some of our findings so we can remember this wonderful experience.
We also saw REAL snowflakes here. What a day!!

We visited the mine with our family of four. We were amazed by the landscape. The explanations and the subsequent search for the crystals were exciting and unique. When we were looking for a ride on the way back from the car park to the hotel, one of the guides personally took care of it and organized a colleague to take us with her. That's what I call customer orientation in action! Thank you very much!

Absolutely amazing trip from start to finish !!! Our 8 year old loved every single second of it . The pendolino to the cafe is a fantastic experience . The scenery at the cafe is absolutely stunning like Narnia. Our guide Pascal ? (A French gentleman) was brilliant, he was extremely knowledgeable, funny and entertaining. The digging in the mine was a fabulous experience and we were lucky to find some beautiful pieces . We have visited Lapland ten times now and this was by far one of the best experiences we have ever done .

We walked to the lampivaara café to only pay 38 euros instead of 71 per person (the only change was the ride in a cab to the café).

We were taken for the rest of the ride to the “mine”. After 10 minutes of explanation and presentation in a cabin of the different finds, we set off for the "mine". I put in quotation marks because we went down a staircase as if to go to a mine, but it was only an underground field of stones... we were given a pickaxe and told that we could search rocks! We asked for an explanation since it's not actually a mine and apparently in summer they go outside into the field (so the experience would only be disastrous in winter?)

The worst part, in the end, was that we couldn't even take all the stones we found (the size of a pea...), we had to choose just one. What do they do with the rest? We wonder... surely they sell them in their shop afterwards. From tourist exploitation...

I put 2 and not 1 for the sole fact that the guides were nice and the landscape before entering the mine was magnificent!

Dear guest, thank you for your feedback regarding your visit to the Amethyst Mine. There are different options and prices for the visit depending on where you start the tour and if you book transportation or not. We are offering the transportation with our Amethyst pendolinos either from the centre of Luosto or Ukko-Luosto parking lot. If you make your way on your own to the Lampivaara café, then naturally the price goes down. It is a nice track to come either by skiing, snowshoeing, winter biking or just walking. Hopefully you enjoyed that part as it goes in the middle of beautiful Pyhä-Luosto National Park. Regarding the mine, it is really an operating open air mine on the surface of Lampivaara fell. As our guides are explaining in the storytelling part, due to the geological history there is no need to go inside the ground. Amethyst has been crystallized deep inside an ancient mountain range and later on the amethyst deposit of Lampivaara has been discovered thanks to the ice ages and normal erosion in the area. Basically, the mining happens nowadays on the roots of that ancient mountain simply on the surface of Lampivaara. Therefore it is a really different mine from perhaps what comes first in our minds when we think about a mine as they are normally considered to be underground. I hope this clears up what might be a confusion about our mine. The mining is done with the help of the pickaxes by going through the sand after removing bigger stones out of the way. Then we are trying to catch the amethyst and other quartz stones by their reflection in the light. For the lucky stone, each guest can take one stone that fits in their closed fist. For the additional ones, it is possible to buy them with a reasonable charge in our shop. Our guides are responsible for the mining of the amethyst in the summertime and we are getting our raw material from there for the jewels, polished stones etc. in the shop. Of course, we are going through all the extra stones as well so that nothing goes to waste but the majority of our material is mined by our staff. After all, most of the nicest ones naturally get picked up as the lucky stones by the guests - as it should be. We are happy to hear that our guides were nice and you enjoyed the view at Lampivaara. It is really an amazing location. Thank you again for the detailed feedback and hopefully this cleared up some things about our operations and visits. You are warmly welcome to visit us again. Have a great winter! Kind regards, Mervi / Sales

We loved our visit to the mine! We drove to the pick up point (car park) and took the Pendalino to the mine. The Pendalino stops at the cafe on the way up but only for 10-15 minutes - just enough time to use the bathroom (outside compost toilet) and grab a coffee. The whole tour takes around two hours. The guide was really knowledgeable and friendly. Our 7 year old and 3 year old really enjoyed it - particularly smashing the rocks! We found some small amethyst. At the end we took the Pendalino back to the car park (no cafe stop on the way back). Dress warm although the mining is covered there is no heat. The views are absolutely stunning - we took the morning tour at 11.30am so it was still light.

Dear Hapsci, thank you so much for your lovely feedback and detailed information! We are happy to hear that your family enjoyed the experience. Finding the amethysts in the sand is really like a treasure hunt for everyone. Thank you for taking the time to review our mine and greetings from Luosto. We hope to see you with us again - the mine is a wonderful place to visit also in the summer time. Kind regards, Mervi / Sales

Learning the geological history of the area, and the mine, before walking to the open mine to do mining was as interesting as finding a real amethyest stone. We found several --- all with the help of the friendly guide.

I will save your time and money:
1) There are few colors of quartz, from which violet amethyst is one
2) Go outside and pick any small rock you like
There, I saved 24€ of your money and three hours of your time.

A longer version:
The mine is located 2,5 km away from the parking lot. Trail went through an old forest and this was the best part of the trip. With the ticket we got c. 5 min lecture about quartz. The main attraction is a possibility to dig up your own amethyst. This meant that we were guided to a sand pit with many others (and after hundreds of other visitors I assume) and got some time to dick up our own "lucky" rocks. You may find something or not. You can keep only one small rock, but any others, big and valuable ones you cannot keep. After the session we were told to ask from a guide which types of rocks we had found, but since there were c. 40 visitors and only one guide, it took really long time to get your turn. If you were a child, you might find this rock digging exciting, but if you were an adult who would like to educate yourself, just read a Wikipedia article and if you really want to get an amethyst, you can buy one (nice and already polished) cheaper from a store.

A very nice excursion, ideal to do with children. We first received a fascinating explanation about the mine and the different crystals that can be found there. Our Finnish guide even explained everything in Dutch, so our children could understand everything. We were then allowed to dig up some crystals ourselves. Highly recommended.
