Outstanding trip. Best ever. Roads are more even than Yala. Best of all we saw two leopards. Had a really good look at them. Also saw two hornbills quite clearly. Several elephants coming quite near. Spotted dear. Birds of prey, painted stalks, bee eaters. Harsha was our guide and he was knowledgeable and patient.

We went on the safari organized by our hotel (Tranquil Wild) and it was absolutely great experience. We heard stories about overcrowded Yala National Park, where hundreds jeeps packed with tourists try to spot elephants and leopards...
We wanted to have it an easy way and we got what we wanted - hundreds of birds, peacocks, several elephants, crocodiles, turtle, eagles...no leopards but we were still really happy!
There was only one jeep beside us.
Perfect morning.
Go there!

We set out at 5am for this trip but it was perfect. Just us in our jeep with a very good careful driver and a friendly and knowledgeable guide.
it was peaceful and unhurried. We were in the park for approx 4 hours and only saw one other jeep.
We saw a huge array of beautiful animals and birds waking up in the wild with no stress of even being aware of us being there.

We visited this park in the afternoon having been to Yala in the morning, and far preferred it. It was much less busy, and unlike Yala when we did see elephants, jackals etc we had them to ourselves rather than a scrum with scores of other jeeps arriving.
Very enjoyable visit.

So here is some information about this park. Very limited on information. Lucky we found some locals at Priyanthanee Hotel where we stayed. I don’t know local language but I can just say the things I had seen. First off, didn’t see any jeeps out front. This place is not commercialized at all. Actually we were the only ones in the whole park, on Sunday. We seen so many animals though.
Wow. Incredible time today in the wildlife safria of Tanamalwila, Sir Lanka. Seen today about 100 birds, monkeys of course, elephants, deer, crocs, lizards, many peacocks, foxes and so much more. Will make a video on it soon so stay in touch on my YouTube.
Epic! Forest Destine
So if coming here I highly recommend finding a hotel to help you or take your time coming here. You might have to question things all day long even before you can find a Jeep, driver and even a ranger as a guide. But we seen so much. It was truly an amazing experience.

Can you please advise how we go about visiting Lunugamvehera? We plan to enter via the western entrance at Thanamalwila unless there is a reason to use the Eastern entrance at Galge? Presumably we need to get a jeep and driver even though we will already have a car and driver/ 'tourist guide lecturer'? We aim to arrive in time to do an afternoon safari with two children so if we can organise it in advance that would be great. Thank you!

Thanks.

Hi. Can I know if you need a full day to do wildlife photography and can you recommend a good safari jeep service
Skrevet 18. juli 2017
Is it advisable to do a full day or half day tour for wildlife photography? also any recommendations for a safari jeep contact?

Hi, If we (with almost 3 year old) on our way to Bentota from Jetwing Kaduruketha try to visit the lunugamvehera national park this September would that be a bad idea? how much time does it take to see a bit of it? how safe it is? any idea about cost and timing or the procedure?
thanks

Hi, personally I don't really recommend visiting a National Park with small children. The roads are bumpy and dusty. You will spend about 2 - 3 hours in the park which can be tiring for the child. But lot of people do this. This is my personal thought.
In Lunugamwehera, I have heard that chances of seeing a leopard is high in afternoon safaris. Yala block 1 is closed in September, so Lunugamwehera can be a bit crowded unlike other days. The animals are not so use to the vehicles and traffic so the sightings may be difficult.
Also, drive from Wellawaya to Bentota is approx. 5 + hours. If you visit a national park in middle where you will at least spend 2 hours, you will not be able to reach the hotel before evening. I would do this if I have at least 2 nights in Bentota.

Hey Esther!
Thank you for your comment very useful! I will travel with my family in ten days to Sri Lanka (6 people) and we would like to go to Lunugamvehera National Park. Sleep 1 night and do a tour. Please can you give me the contact of your guide? And if you have a recommandation of hostel I would be more than thankful!
Have a good day,
Constance
