I am slightly disappointed to know the castle is closed. Yes, you cannot enter the castle. We can only walk around the compound of the castle. It is nice but of course not as interesting as those castles which you can enter. There is a photo booth which a photographer will take 3 photos of you and you get to choose 1. A small photo is free while a bigger version costs JPY 1,200.

Really interesting and historically important castle that played a critical role in Tokugawa Ieyasu's life and reign, as well as had an interesting history post-restoration during the Meiji era. Its a great example of Edo architecture and is slightly different from Nijo-ji castle in Kyoto in that you get a better sense of daily life of the people who lived there beyond just the shogun and his representatives (i.e., you can see the kitchens and where the servants would have worked, etc.). The art on the panels is also just remarkable (yes, they are reproductions of the originals, but that is because it was bombed during WWII and most of the originals were destroyed...still the reproductions are accurate and artisans went through an interesting process to reproduce the art accurately according to the style of the Kano family who were the ones commissioned to do the paintings during the 17th century). The castle grounds and fortifications are also super interesting. Well worth visiting in Nagoya.

It was good

Cheap admission fee

A castle worth seeing

The crowds didn't bother me

The generals' spirit of service

You could have a drink at the outdoor stalls

The teahouse was open to the public

It was bad

You couldn't enter the castle tower

It's a bit cliche, but it was really fun. I think it would be even more fun if you could enter the castle tower.

A typical Nagoya tour of Nagoya Castle and Atsuta Shrine. (lol)
It was a little early for the cherry blossoms, but the view of the Honmaru through the beautiful weeping cherry blossoms beyond the East Gate was wonderful.
After seeing the gorgeous Honmaru Palace, we headed to the Honmaru. What a magnificent castle!
The stone walls from the moat were also magnificent.
Nagoya Castle, built in the early Edo period, was burned down in an air raid in 1945. The castle tower was rebuilt in 1959 using steel-reinforced concrete, but due to deterioration and earthquake resistance, it is currently not open to the public. However, there is a wealth of historical materials, including detailed measured drawings, and it is said that a faithful restoration is possible, so Nagoya City has decided to restore the castle tower in wood.
I wonder if we will be able to see the restored wooden Honmaru...

Tokugawa Ieyasu began construction of Nagoya Castle in 1610 as a preparation for the Toyotomi faction in Osaka. Nagoya Castle was built to represent the prestige of the Tokugawa clan, and so its symbol is the large, beautiful castle tower topped with a golden shachihoko (a carved statue of a lion).
When I visited a few years ago, I was able to climb the castle tower and see part of the Honmaru Palace, which was under reconstruction, but now it is not possible to enter the castle tower due to aging facilities and a lack of earthquake resistance. Instead, the Honmaru Palace is now completed, and I was able to take my time looking at its magnificent interior.
Nagoya Castle, especially the castle tower, is magnificent, and I think it is a beautiful castle that serves as a model for castles all over Japan.

The main Castle tower is closed. We visited Hammaru Palace. It is a sprawling building with many meeting rooms throughout. Rooms open to an exterior hallway surrounding the perimeter with floors that squeak; built that way intentionally to alert the inhabitants to intruders. The art work within the rooms are replicas of the originals housed offsite. Because we were on one of many tours on site at the time, our time was very limited and rushed. To really appreciate and read the descriptions of each room, It would probably be better to visit on your own so you could spend as much time as needed.

Admission to many of the new local tourist attractions is 500 yen per person, but if you visit them with a one-day pass for city buses or subways, you can get a discount of 100 yen off by showing your ticket at the reception desk. I don't know about the other castles, but the grounds are large and there are many things to see, so I personally enjoyed it.

Visited here in my time in Nagoya, it's honestly beautiful. So great to visit and see within the palace also. The outside beauty in this place you can see as you walk through the castle grounds.

I was surprised to see that it has become a tourist destination, with areas such as Kinshachi Yokocho and Muneharu Zone that were not there when I visited in the past increasing in number. I was impressed by how they take on new challenges while valuing the quaint area.

Well worth a visit when in town and could easily spend 2-3hrs wandering around. English signs throughout for non-japanese speaking visitors, good gift shop and lockers available.
