Straightforward layout:
After having been to the labyrinth of Tokyo and Osaka JR stations, we felt much more relaxed to know that Fukuoka's Hakata JR Station has a pretty straightforward layout. Pretty much a rectangular layout, and most people only get lost because they wander off to one the malls (e.g. AMU Plaza, AMU Est, KITTE, etc) connected to the station. By the way, each mall's different in terms of retail mix so do your research!
We liked the stores/supermarkets:
1) plenty of ekibento stores, convenient marts and cafes e.g. Cinnabon + Mister Donuts are literally right there at the tap in/ tap out areas so you could grab coffees or those famous train-bentos before you catch your next train!
2) the relatively large Hakata supermarket's so close to the station that we could grab necessities or famous local snacks at good, supermarket prices just before we take our train to our next destination/prefecture!
TWO JR offices:
JR WEST office (close to the main entrance) where we collected our JR pass, was a different office from JR KYUSHU office where we collected the Yufuin No Mori (sightseeing train to Yufuin). They're right next to each other.
CUTE name and mailbox:
1) Learnt that even though this is the main JR train station of Fukuoka, it is not called, "JR Fukuoka Station" but it is called, "JR Hakata Station" instead because Hakata's the old name of Fukuoka! To be precise, there were two areas and Hakata was subsumed into Fukuoka. But to please the citizens who still loved their Hakatan roots, they named the station Hakata Station.
2) The one and only heart-shaped mailbox in the whole city (or even Japan) to have cupid and also a shorter slot just for little kids to post their mail. At the square outside the train station/ Amu Plaza entrances.

I transferred from the subway to the JR, but the station was crowded on weekends. It was crowded at best, but to my surprise, I couldn't help wondering why each JR train was not as busy as the one on the left, but only the station. When people gathered at the station who did not use the train, it was thought that there were many problems in terms of crisis management, so I had to wonder if it would be possible to consolidate commercial facilities at the station.

Access by bullet train, regular railway and subway, Fukuoka Airport is easily accessible by subway in about 5 minutes. The scale of the station building, which is adjacent to the bus terminal and a collection of commercial complexes, was amazing! After all, I stayed at a hotel in front of Tsukushiguchi, so just walking around the campus to Hakataguchi was a real sense of the vastness. And just at the Hakataguchi-mae plaza, I was blown away by the scale of the illuminations and the Christmas market being held in Hakata, the city of light.

Hakata Station (博多駅, Hakata-eki) is a key railway station located in Hakata-ku, Fukuoka, Japan. It is the biggest and most active railway station in Kyushu, serving as a portal to other cities in Kyushu for passengers arriving from Honshu by train. The San'yō Shinkansen arriving from Osaka terminates at this station.
The station underwent reconstruction in 2011. The primary structure was torn down, and a new, more expansive station building, along with office buildings and additional platforms, was erected. The reconstruction project for the station was launched particularly for the Kyushu Shinkansen extension from Hakata to Shin-Yatsushiro Station, which extends south along its current route to Kagoshima-Chūō Station. The new station structure houses a Hankyu Department Store, its inaugural branch in Kyushu, alongside other retailers making their debut in Kyushu, such as Tokyu Hands.

Intimidating at first but actually very navigable. There are multiple options for commute, or touring. A little research is all it takes on where to go, what to board, and how to get to it.

…even by Japanese standards but still only a train station/mall combo so I wouldn’t recommend seeking it out unless you’re travelling through.

This is the station that connects JR Shinkansen (bullet) trains and the JR Railway (local) network.
Well-designed, easy access to the tracks and amenities. Washrooms are plentiful, wait is reasonable.
Easy access to JR Hakata City shopping complex, including Amu Plaza and Hakata Hankyu Department Store.

Easy to get lost, easy to find your trains, easy to spend money and easy to get something to eat and drink.
The station is a city unto itself.

It's really complicated inside. It's big, but I don't know where it is if you go underground. It's really complicated because it's connected to a terminal next to it. I barely found a restaurant after looking at Google Maps and wandering here and there. However, it is easy to get to Amu Plaza or Hankyu Department Store on the ground. It is convenient to use as there are many various shops and restaurants. In addition, the subway is well-guided, making it convenient to get from the airport to Hakata Station and from Hakata Station to the hotel.

This is the gateway to Kyushu's number one city.
A wide variety of transportation options are available here, including JR, Shinkansen, subways, and buses.
The town around the station is beautiful, and at this time of year the illuminations are sparkling.

Hello,
I was in fukuoka recently, i assume you are asking which part/town of fukuoka to stay?
Hakata itself is an area that is convenient. It is one of main station to get you to omnomichi. There are many train routes so you need to find the right one.
Some trains are express more expensive and some local cheaper.
The local trains allow you to see more along the way.
You can also stop if there are sites along the route you are traveling to.
I do researched ahead so have an idea where are these areas..
There are many hotels near to this hakata station.
Another station is tienjin station. Most travellers will take trains from either of these 2 main stations.
Tienjin area had more big shopping malls.
Hakata station had more hotels nearby.
From hakata station, you can catch a train to omnomichi.
I checked and the train will take 2hr 20 min. It will pass through kitakyshu, then hiroshima then onomichi. You can research more via google map.
At the train stations, you can check at ticket counter and they will even tell you the fastest route or what to see along the way.
I hope this is of a little help.
In fukuoka, you can go to canal city area and walk along the river. This is old town area. The canal city mall is the new part.
The marina area is also great to explore in fukuoka.
Enjoy your trip.

Hi, Do you know how long we can keep our luggage in the coin lockers at Hakata Station? Ideally, I'd need to leave my luggage there for 4 days if possible.
Thanks!
Skrevet 12. juli 2019
I doubt if it is worth keeping it for so long.
My suggestion when traveling from place to place is to keep luggage as light as possible.
The only possibility is if you are coming back in same city and staying there, u may want to ask the hotel ...some may be able to keep for u since u are coming back. We had been successful most of the time.
Otherwise carry with you to the destination and place it at that destination locker...most likely a train station locker.
For security reasons many may not want people to keep unknown items for too long a period.
So travel light, buy items as u travel.
A light versatile jacket, convertible pants...into bermudas are good option, dry fast t shirt, etc..even undergarments ...disposables type...
I seen people carrying heavy luggage up long flight of stairs...dont think u can enjoy if half the time you are like moving house.
We usually buy on the way back. We know we are coming back so we will buy it after visiting the places first.
Enjoy!

Subway train ride is 5 - 6 mins to the domestic terminal. Free shuttle bus runs between domestic and international terminals. The ride is about 15 mins. Taxi ride would be 20 mins.
Skrevet 11. mars 2019
If you only have 5/6 hours and want to go someplace roundtrip out of Hakata on the bullet train, where would you go? Want to experience the train and have lunch? Thank you.
Skrevet 18. oktober 2018
One option is to go to Kumamoto by shinkansen, have lunch and come back .. one way travel is 30 to 40 minutes .. you can even roam around a bit in Kumamoto and return ..

What is the biggest size of the lockers? Since will have a 30” suitcase. Will it fit?
Skrevet 3. juni 2018
There're 10 LL size coin lockers on the 2nd level of Chikushi entrance. It fits 35 x 113 x 57 cm, which is the largest. When you walk the central concourse, there's a lift and steps to the 2nd level Shinkansen ticket gate. Coin locker area is located next to the gift shop.

Skrevet 3. juni 2018
There are all sorts of lockers, from small ones to big ones. The standard suitcase sizes allowed by the airlines would fit in one of the lockers. Just look for this. You can google a map of Hakata station so you will have an idead where the lockers are located.

If you arrive at Central Wharf, it's 20 -30 minutes by bus and 15 - 20 minutes ride by taxi. Hakozaki Wharf is a little remote, but catching a taxi may be also difficult.
Skrevet 21. juni 2018
Hi Phillip T. You have to take a flight from SHIA Airport (Jakarta/Cengkareng, Indonesia) to Fukuoka Airport (Fukuoka, Japan), the flight will be about 10 hours (transit flight). I'm not sure if they had direct flight from Indonesia to Japan. Then board a train from Hakata Train Station to Nagasaki, ¥3090 per person, one way. Enjoy your trip!

How far is Maizuru Park and Uminonakamichi Sea side park from Hakata station ?
Skrevet 19. januar 2017
Ride subway train to Maizuru Park and alight at Ohori Koen station. Ride may be 10-15 minutes.
For Uminonakamichi Seaside Park, you have 2 options: one is bus to Bayside Place and ferry, the other is ride JR train to Kashii station and transfer to another local train to Saitozaki station. Ride would be 1 hour or so. We usually drive to Uminonakamichi area.
