Hi Sorry for the late response, have been travelling in Japan again! Yes! Well I have done a bit of searching and honestly if seems that few websites indicate when the market is open in this period. The market will have moved by then in terms of the real auction known as Toyosu Fish Market and is near Shijomae Station, on the Yurikamome Line, in Tokyo’s Koto Ward—about 2km east of Tsukiji’s current location. Some websites claim the new one is a bit sterile. I guess Tsukiji will be the touristic site that it has become already. If you are keen on seeing some live action, without restrictions, head off to the cold of the Nihonkai in Hyogo Prefecture. At Kasumi fishing port, you can see live action at the auctions. Check their website- kami-cho, for the dates, then after expecting freezing weather, (good for the complexion) head off to the best onsen- hot springs. Book these online. Taxis can get you there from the Kasumi station, stay overnight and head to your next destination by train if you are not driving! This is experiencing the real Japan!

Tsukiji is no longer Tokyo's wholesale fish market but rather tightly packed rows of vendors selling dried fish, produce, knives, fresh seafood, Wagyu beef, “unlaid” chicken eggs, Tamagoyaki (Japanese omelets) and fresh wasabi. You (and your kids) will be able to stroll and enjoy the vendors and their wares well into mid- to late afternoon, but do not expect to see tuna being auctioned.

You don't need to buy your tuna here. If you are looking for fish sellers then you need to go to the new fish market, Toyosu Market that replaced Tsukiji (and moved earlier this year). But if you are just looking to buy good quality Tuna then I would suggest going to a small local fish market or grocery store to get decent tuna at a much better price.

Hi Louise, it is a 2km walk from the Ginza Station to the Tsukiji fish market. Alternatively you might take early in the morning the subway. However, there is no direct connection from Ginza (Station) to Tsukiji fish market. You have to take the Metro from Ginza to Roppongi (9 min runs every 10 min) and from Roppongi to the Tsukijishijo station (11 min runs every 10 min) and finally a 2 min walk from the station to the market.

The markets have moved to Toyosu since Oct 11, 2018. The new buildings are more sterile.

I think it will be moved to the new location in October 2018.

I think the whole area will be closed down after October. The outer market might stay open a bit longer to maximize sales. But the whole area is to be developed, as I understand it. I'd expect it to be closed but check in October to see if any of it's still open.

The best thing to do is get there around 10 am I don't think the actual auction is open to the public. It's just as much fun at 10am.
