This time, for the first time, I spent a whole day walking around the so-called Yanesen area.
Even though there are many attractions, it is within a distance that you can see most of them in a day's walk.
There is a retro feel with historic shops and old stores along the way.
There's plenty to see, including stylish restaurants and miscellaneous goods stores.
There were decorations that would be perfect for cat lovers, so we had a lot of fun walking around.
I learned about it for the first time on this visit.
There are many multinational shops, probably because the Skyliner station is nearby.
The old, new, and multinationality mix well in the former downtown area.
I felt what is called diversity.

This was our first stop on our first full day in Japan as we wanted to ease in to the culture. The area was full of interesting and small temple and older buildings that I had come to thing of as being more traditional Japan. Had some really tasty food and enjoyed looking in the shops on the main shopping street. Not too busy so a great start to our trip and even got a few photos with some of the many cat statues around the area. Would recommend a visit if you have time to fit it in to your trip.

Had been here many years ago and loved it. It is truly the traditional old Japan. The cemetery is very atmospheric and many temples to wander through. It is serene and peaceful and the perfect antidote when the high rises of most of Tokyo get to you.

A quiet place. This is rare in Tokyo. A few shops. You can stroll through small streets but the architecture is uninteresting.

Guide Hana was very knowledgeable and personable. We lucked out as we were only the 2 on the tour. We learned lots about Japan and we enjoyed walking through a quiet middle class area of Tokyo. Enjoyed some beverages and snacks included. Hana has a passion for being a tour guide. She is upbeat and a good sense of humor.
She even took us back to our hotel train station so we would not get lost. Definitely above and beyond.

Ideal area for strolling, between the small wooden houses, the countless temples and small cemeteries. Very pleasant

Yanaka is one of my favorite places in Tokyo. Its so relaxing and so totally different from what you otherwise experience in Tokyo. There is nothing "huge" to see. Its just "old Tokyo", with small cemetaries, buddhist temples, quirky coffee or tea shops, small boutiques, a sake museum, art boutiques etc. It feels so different from most of Tokyo. It makes for a great stroll and gives you a totally different impression of the otherwise so busy and modern Tokyo.

An old and charming neighbourhood to visit. You can spend almost 1 full day here and take it slow, away from bustling Tokyo. The cemetery is serene and you can get a good stroll there too.
There are a lot of temples scattered around and some lovely eateries and shops. Nice place to grab a drink and do some urban sketching with the lovely buildings that survived the war.
I enjoyed myself here and wished I had more time to spend here.

What a great area within which to walk around. Fewer people, quieter, nice local shops. If you take the right roads you can find some quaint old temples, we came across one for "strong legs". Definitely visit and take a gentle slow pace. However, having said all that the area is still not "old" in the way that we in Europe would consider old.

It’s available all year round, as it’s a suburb of Tokyo, where locals live, work and shop. Tourists are simply observing the local scene. It will be cool at that time of year so dress appropriately, as there is a lot of outdoor walking!

There are two very good ryokan - traditional hotels/hostels - tatami rooms with futons. Both mainly cater for westerners. Sawanoya (I have written a review) is the most popular and there is Annex katsutaro Ryokan, slightly more up market. There is .hotel-livemax in nearby nippori and newly opened sakura-hotel but I haven't stayed at either, my guess is cheap and cheerful, Yanaka isn't really hotel territory, more local feel. Good luck

We also explored Yanaka on our own and we really enjoyed the area! The backstreet alleys of Yanaka are especially nice with beautiful old wooden buildings that survived the bombings during the war.
We loved "Ueno Sakuragi Atari" which is a complex of old wooden houses converted to a microbrewery bar (fantastic craft beers!), a delicious bakery, etc. Tokyo Bike is also a great shop for bicycle lovers, which is in a tasteful old Japanese wooden building.
Highly recommended!
