This is a rare shrine with only three "Miwa Torii (Mitsutorii)" and two "Komaushi" in Tokyo, but when I visited this time, I noticed that the carvings under the "haiden/karahafu" are also unusual. The carvings of "Dragon" and "Phoenix" are not so rare, but if you look at the carvings near the "lion's wooden nose", from the left, they are elaborate carvings of [Plum x Bush Warbler], [Pine x Magpie (?)], [Bamboo x Sparrow], so if you have the opportunity to visit, I recommend that you look up.

We will provide information about Ushijima Shrine in Mukojima, Sumida Ward. We visited Ushijima Shrine on July 27, 2023. To access Ushijima Shrine, exit the A3 exit of Azumabashi Station on the Toei Asakusa Line, go to the right (towards Oshiage) for about 15m, and at the first traffic light, you will find the Mizuho ATM Corner Honjo Azumabashi Station Branch. Turn left without crossing the crosswalk, and go straight for about 420m. You will see the stone torii gate of Ushijima Shrine on your left after the traffic light in front of Ushijima Shrine. Turn left, go under the stone torii gate, and go about 60m to the right.
If you look into the history of Ushijima Shrine, it has a long history. It is said that in 860, Jikaku Daishi met an old man who was the incarnation of Susanoo no Mikoto at Issoan, and was founded by divine revelation. It is said that in the late Heian period, Minamoto no Yoritomo, who was stranded by a flood of the Sumida River caused by heavy rain, built a shrine after praying and was able to cross the river safely. The name Ushi no Gozensha was also given by Emperor Go-Nara. It was originally located in Susaki-cho, Mukojima, but moved to its current location after the Great Kanto Earthquake. It is known as the main shrine of Honjo, and is close to Tokyo Skytree, where it is also the guardian deity. By the way, a crystal netsuke amulet with the Tokyo Skytree design costs 700 yen. In addition, at the grand festival held once every five years, a traditional procession centered on a phoenix (oxcart) parades through the fifty towns of parishioners, praying for their safety. In this Shinko Festival, a black male Wagyu becomes a sacred cow and pulls the phoenix, which is rare these days. The "Nageushi" in the shrine grounds is famous as a prayer for physical and mental healing, as it is believed that if you stroke the same part of the cow as you do, your illness will be cured, and it is said that not only the body but also the mind will be healed. In addition, there is a rare "Miwa Torii" (three torii) and "Koma-ushi" (guardian lion cow) in front of the main hall.

Overview of "Ushijima Shrine"
①Shrine name: Ushijima Shrine
②Enshrined deities: Susanoo-no-Mikoto, Amenohohi-no-Mikoto, Sadatsu-no-Mikoto
③Shrine within the grounds: Koume Inari Shrine

02_ [Access]
⑴ 8 minutes (600m) walk from the East Exit of "Tokyo Skytree Station" on the Tobu Skytree Line
⑵ 6 minutes (450m) walk from the A3 Exit of "Azumabashi Station" on the Toei Asakusa Line

03_ [Highlights of "Ushijima Shrine"]
⑴ "Rubbing the cow"
The custom of rubbing the cow has been known since the Edo period. It is said that if you rub the part of your body that is hurting and then rub the same part of the cow, your illness will be cured. It is believed that the "Nadeushi" at Ushijima Shrine has the power to heal not only the body but also the mind. There is also a legend that if a bib is dedicated when a child is born and the child is put on it, the child will grow up healthy. This cow statue is said to have been dedicated around 1815. Before that, it was a natural stone in the shape of a cow. In the poem "Awashima Kangetsu" written by an early Meiji writer, "The stone of the Nadeushi is like a cool green leaf," and in "Childhood," Hori Tatsuo described how he "loved the cow with its somewhat melancholic sunlight." The "Nadeushi" at Ushijima Shrine has always been loved by people.
⑵ Kyoka monument of "Isokasuha"
The Kyoka monument of "Isokasuha" is located near the torii gate in front of the main shrine. The Kyoka monument of "Isokasuwa" is inscribed with the words, "Isokasuwa gets wet, and after the evening shower, a rainbow of patience rises, Danshurou Utei Enma." This Kyoka monument was erected by the first Utei Enma himself in Bunka 7 (1810). He was born in Kanpo 3 (1743). Rakugo, which was established as a form of storytelling during the Genroku period, declined thereafter, but in Tenmei 4 (1784), Utei Enma held a "rakugo gathering" at the Musashi-ya restaurant in Mukojima, where he wrote and performed his own stories, which were well received, and Edo rakugo became popular. The current form of "rakugo" was completed around the end of the Kansei period, and the term "rakugo" became established in the Meiji period. ⑶ Komaushi (guardian lion)
Generally, at shrines, the entrance and guardian lion dogs sit with fierce expressions to ward off evil spirits, but at Ushijima Shrine, there is a guardian lion in the place where guardian lion dogs are usually placed. The guardian lion is placed further back. In fact, at Ushijima Shrine, there are also other guardian lion dogs, such as a parent and child guardian lion climbing Shishiyama, a registered cultural property of Sumida Ward, and adorable guardian lion dogs with smiling expressions. If you look at each one, you will see that they all have different expressions and appearances, so you can enjoy them to the fullest. In addition, next to the guardian lion dogs next to the main shrine, there is a guardian lion with a very scary expression, which is also a registered cultural property of Sumida Ward. When you think of cows, you think of Tenmangu Shrine, but the cows at Ushijima Shrine are said to be derived from Gozu Tenno, another name for the enshrined deity, Susanoo no Mikoto.
⑷ Miwa Torii
In front of the main shrine of Ushijima Shrine, there is a torii gate with an unusual shape. When I looked at the main shrine from the stone torii gate, I was struck by a moment of incongruity as it was different from the usual sight. There were small torii gates on both sides of the large torii gate. Miwa Torii are rare nationwide, but unfortunately, their origin is unknown. By the way, Miwa Torii is a combination of a side torii gate on either side of a Myojin Torii gate. It is also called Mitsu Torii, and there are only a few places in the country with this type, such as Ogami Shrine and its auxiliary shrine Hibara Shrine in Sakurai City, Nara Prefecture, Mitsumine Shrine in Chichibu City, Saitama Prefecture, and Ushijima Shrine.
⑸ The "Shrine" and "Inner Hall" The "Shrine" is a wooden, all-cypress Gongen-style structure that was rebuilt in 1932. It is an integrated structure that connects the "Main Hall," "Offering Hall," and "Worship Hall," and the carvings are magnificent in every detail. The "Inner Hall" is covered with tatami mats, and you can go up there to worship. Immediately upon entering the "Inner Hall," you will see impressive lion heads on both sides, glaring down at you. Of course, you can also worship in the inner hall, but if you do, be sure to ask a member of the shrine staff.
