Afew years ago my wife and I and various children regularly visited Crich tramway Museum on the Starlight Halloween extravaganza which used to run for a weeks period. We used to really love this time as the area was done up with spooky halloween figures and lights. Some of the trams were done up in halloween style with cobwebs spiders and lightswetc to add to the atmosphere. In addition there was a walk back to the centre through the wood which was illuminated with lights and halloween figures and makeshift actors would tell spooky tales. We would finish off having a cosy drink and some food in the red lion pub which was also done out in halloween attire. These were special and very enjoyable times.
For some unknown reason about a year or 2 ago the museum ceased to entertain this event and I was completely gutted. So gutted in fact that I have not visited the museum since nor will i do so unless it is restored.I am at a complete loss as to why the event was shelved as this event was very popular with families alike and the spooky museum grounds lent itself to the Halloween theme.I implore the powers which be to reinstate this event to its full entirety so that myself and others alike and gain much pleasure and enjoyment.

We picked a beautiful sunny day for our visit so we had a great time here. Do try and take the guided walk around as it's very informative. We were shown a street sign which came from Electric Avenue in Birmingham. Many members of my family were employed at the GEC works and would have passed this sign going to and from work! The tram rides were fun and the exhibitions and workshops all very interesting. The new cafe which is being built will be a great addition to the site.

We are staying in the area, so visited. It was a lovely day. We went on several trams, looked around the exhibition and trams, and went into the cafe for lunch. Very friendly, knowledgeable staff.

A great museum, if you have a car. I did a day trip from London and it was totally exhausting. The 2023 bus timetable posted on the website is 100% obsolete. All routes and times changed in August 2024. There are buses from Alfreton, Matlock, Ambergate, Belper and more, but while there are four+ bus routes, 140, 141, 142, 143 they all run very infrequently and from different termini, making train/bus connections risky. And note that a few Alfreton buses go to the railway station, but most only end on the high street. When I left the museum I waited at the shelter where an up-to-date timetable (which contradicted the pole sign) said bus 142 to Alfreton would arrive at 1544. It did, but on the other side of the road! Fortunately the bus driver saw me and did a U-turn, picking my up at an unsheltered stop on the opposite corner. Even the bus driver admitted it was very confusing! What this museum needs to do is operate a twice daily shuttle from a nearby rail station that is timed to meet trains, even when they're late. And the shuttle could take visitors all the way to the entrance building, avoiding the unpleasant walk through the car park. i would gladly pay a few quid for such a service!

Spent a lovely day here yesterday. Lots to see and beautiful woodland walk. Plenty of picnicking areas and very dog friendly. Everybody friendly and knowledgeable. Looking forward to a return visit soon.

Loved it! Haven’t been for years and glad we can go time and time again for a year :) loved the olde sweet shops and forge shop and all the bits of history :) you feel like your in a different world.
The only piece of advice but I’m aware there’s a new cafe being opened in October. The food
We had from the red lion was nice but missing a few tiny things… my fella had a tuna and cheese sandwich but there was no sauces, even a few sachets of sauces would be enough :) my jacket potatoes lovely but I expected a bit more saled :)
Other than that amazing day out despite the rain :) xx

A bit of a gem, if on the expensive side but plenty to do and see.
It's a tram museum and as such younger children may struggle but they try to put things on and there's a decent softplay.
We're not transport enthusiasts but it was nonetheless interesting and enjoyable with nice walks and parks, including children's play areas too.
Some vintage shops and a pub/cafe though the food range is limited.
Be aware that it's generally only open 10am-4pm but run by volunteers so a recommendation.

Hadn't been here for some time. Really enjoyed going back and seeing the changes. Lots of new trams to see and loved the new woodland walk. Wood sculptures are great, not just for the kids!!

We went as a family of three and whilst you can return for free within a year, we found £46 for 2 adults to be expensive for the experience.
Riding the tram is fun, but it didn’t feel like there was much else to experience. Whilst it’s nice seeing the trams through the ages in the depot and exhibition centre, there is only one tram to go on board, so my little one soon lost interest.
The play areas also felt a little underwhelming, as did the eating facilities. Hopefully the new cafe will help, but the current facilities didn’t seem like an enjoyable place to eat.
It just felt expensive and slightly disappointing for what it was and think places like the Black County Museum or Ironbride do it better.
Not sure we will return.

How long we should plan to spend there? With two kids 3 and 9 years old

Are there height restrictions to the car park
Skrevet 10. august 2022
It is. There is a 'smoothway' from Admissions to the main Village area, but being an historic site, there are some areas which are difficult to make smooth. There is a slope from Admissions to the main street. You can see our Accessibility Statement on our website.

Yes, dogs on a lead are welcome everywhere except Rita's Tearooms and the indoor children's play area.

Is it pushchair accessible? Are pushchairs allowed on the trams?
Skrevet 10. august 2019
Yes you can use pushchairs around the site. They cannot be taken on the trams, but there is a buggy park near to the tram stop to leave them.
Skrevet 12. august 2019
How far is it to walk if we caught the a accessible tram at 11.30 and walked back with the wheelchair?
Also, is there a place to leave a motorized scooter, and can one be used to travel round the park?
Thank you

You can fill in a form online for group bookings via plan your visit and they will get in touch with you. This has to be done at least one week before visiting.
