This was a stop as part of the plan to visit Kandy. Unknowingly it’s real worth I have purchase two stones; one aquamarine and one topaz. After thought and some research, I don’t feel too confident about the genuineness of their claim about the quality of their stones. Upon checking with a friend’s collaborator, I learnt that I may have paid nearly 2x the actual price of the stones.
Having read the mixed reactions posted here, it makes me wonder if I just became the “bakra” or I just donated to a country struggling with inflation and a drowning economy. Either way I have learnt my lesson; never buy precious stones without a trusted source who could not have a conflict of interest.
Gamini Gems, if you’re monitoring this site and the reviews, I would love to hear your side of the story. Once I am back to my own home, I will find out the truth.

We had holidays in Sri Lanka. And also we were planning to buy some gems in Kandy. As we did not know anyone there, I had to read many reviews online for different gem shops. Finally we filtered out most of them and visited Gamini. First we discussed our concerns regarding fake stones and overpriced items. Sumith, was guy who met us there. He answered our questions in a calm and patient way. He introduced himself and described their family business, which started years ago. Then he presented us items, which we were looking for. This was done in relaxed atmosphere with no pressure at all. I had a nice cup of coffee as well. As a result, we bought 5 items with great discounts. They gave invoice and certificate for each item. Thanks!

First you watch a documentary on gem stone mining and then you are taken around the museum for a tour about stones. The man who guided us was very knowledgeable and answered all our questions. They also have a shop to buy stones. I purchased a moonstone in silver pendant and the color of the silver changed around 2 weeks after the purchase. The prices are more reasonable than other spots in Sri Lanka. More reviews @myra.recommends

ドライバーさんがお勧めの店だと言い訪問。すぐ宝石を見せてくれるのかと思ったら採掘の仕方の映像を見せてくれた。日本語がちょっとよくわかんないからもう1回作り直した方がいいとは思う。採掘の勉強にはなった、みんな大変な思いしてとってるんだと思った。次に一個一個を宝石の説明をしてくれるそれも結構勉強になったいろいろあるんだと思った。
デザインセンスが日本と違うのでちょっと戸惑う日本と似たようなデザインが欲しい人は宝石だけ買うのもいいかもしれない。ちゃんと鑑定書作ってくれる結構安かった私は7000円ぐらいの2個買った職場で使える小さめのものを買いました。

We had a fabulous experience at Gamini Gems. Mr. Gamini and his expert team are professional, kind, and knowledgable about gems and have created stunning pieces at respectable prices. The establishment is clean, welcoming, and you are greeted by many kind jewelers who are ready to help you find exactly what you are looking for. The designs are delicate and the craftsmanship is exceptional. It is evident that the pieces are of exquisite quality. I purchased a pair of blue sapphire earrings and a matching white gold ring and was given an authentication slip for both as well. I highly recommend stopping by and taking a look at their gorgeous pieces!

It is interesting to see the various processes the gems go through to become gems.
To see the work sheets of the individuals and see what they are making was also interesting. Then through to the sale room -….. well we were not pressurised to purchased anything but they didn’t give up. All an experience!

When we returned home, we immediately had the pieces we bought here appraised for insurance purposes. Imagine my surprise and disappointment. The appraiser tried SO hard not to insult me or offend me. She first asked what the stones were supposed to be and whether the seller had given me a written statement about what I was buying (the statement describes the stones as “natural”). Then she asked very hesitantly whether they had disclosed any treatments performed in the stones. She explained that the only value was in the gold. The stones are so treated that they have no value. Basically i am now the chastened owner of three pieces of colored glass. In an attempt to soften the blow, she offered this coup de grace: you can still wear them because they are pretty.
Over the past THIRTY years, we’ve bought jewelry from different shops in Sri Lanka. Every piece and stone has appraised as exactly what the seller said we were buying. We shopped at Gamini gems on the recommendation of a close and trusted source. This is the first time we have been defrauded. Maybe once in 30 years is not bad odds? Did we become complacent? Was it our fault for not asking exactly what was done to the stones? Caveat emptor has struck solidly. If you decide to patronize this shop, go in armed with information and questions to ask and be ready to choose another seller.

We often buy jewellery when overseas, and our trip to Sri Lanka in 2003 was no exception. You do need to understand the "rules of the game" though.
a) Always pay be credit card - if the goods are found not to be of value, then you have a claim against the credit card issuer.
b) If you are taken by a guide, then anything you buy will contain a commission price that is paid to the guide - so for the best prices, go alone!
On our last trip to Sri Lanka we took a piece of costume jewellery in the form of a snake neckless and the Gamini team made a gold and sapphire version. We asked for the price in advance, and the team built the neckless. It is wonderful.
Upon arriving home, we had the items assayed by a reputable jeweller which confirmed that we had paid an appropriate price - even after adding on the Customs duty.

I am so saddened to read the bad reviews on here. This place is fantastic! Yes they try and sell but that's how they make a living! I spent at least 2 hours deciding on a ring and they didn't rush me at all. When I got home about 6 months later one of the sapphire fell out and I emailed them. They told me to post it back and within 2 weeks it was returned to me all fixed and shined, no questions asked and no payment asked for. The service was amazing. The ring was only $300 to start with so I was really surprised. If you are genuinely thinking of buying and want reassurance of great customer service then purchase from here!

These guys are good! I mean exceptional sales skills and in acting. What’s even better is our driver that casually takes us here like it was part of our itinerary. Yes we are frequent travellers but yet we still get caught up in this mess cause we are too nice to say no or don’t want to hurt people’s feelings.
They sat us down to watch a short mining video of the gems stones, walk us around to the workers that were hand crafting the jewellery and then bam they sit you down on a table and do the hard sell.
“Mam what is your favourite colour gemstones”, “sir these gems would look so beautiful on your wife”, yeah you know the drill. Some gems were beautiful but way way overpriced, they had them in USD prices.
After painfully saying no no no, we decided to haggle down a pair of earring studs from 170 USD to 110 USD, we just wanted to get out of there! I don’t like how they put pressure on the people that walk in, they also gave us a certificate of the gemstone thar we purchased but I’m pretty sure it’s not worth the amount we ended up paying!
