The views up were great but the actual bridge was meh compared to arches at the other Utah national parks. One of my least favorite hikes in the big 5.

The hike is not that long and doable, even for me as older almost senior person. The reward ar the end of the trail is magnificent. It took me about one hour and 15 minutes to complete the hike and return.

My wife and I took several hikes during our time at Capitol Reef, this was as enjoyable as any of them and made for some of the best photo opportunities. This is one of the most popular trails, so expect to see other hikers and evidence of human activity, including graffiti and litter. We hiked in the early evening to avoid the masses and the heat, which proved to be a good decision. Would hike again in the future.

Hickman Bridge is a fantastic trail and was the highlight of our visit to Capital Reef National Park! The trail is very well maintained and well marked in most places and you’ll be surrounded by some pretty awesome rock formations and geological wonders all along the hike that make Utah so special!
AllTrails puts the trail at 1.7 miles long with 415+ feet elevation gain. But we did some exploring along some of the many offshoots and ended up doing about 2.5 miles with 500 feet elevation gain. The elevation gain is gradual and very doable so I’d call this trail moderate. Took us just under 2 hours but we were slow and goofing around a lot lol.
Hickman Bridge is the main natural wonder along the trail - it’s a huge natural bridge - one of the largest in the whole park - rising 125 feet tall and spanning 133 feet of dry wash bed. Definitely quite a sight to see and well worth the hike - I highly recommend it!
The Hickman Bridge is definitely not the only wonder and fun feature along the trail. If you keep your eye out, you’ll see a little area off to the right about halfway in that leads to a smaller natural bridge called Nels Johnson bridge and it’s really cool! It’s got two openings and it’s still large enough for me to stand in and I’m 5’3” but my son had to slouch and he’s almost 6’ so watch your head if you’re tall lol!
Apparently there are also some granary ruins and petroglyphs along the trail, left by the ancient Fremont and Paiute peoples, but unfortunately we didn’t find any of them and I wasn’t aware until after - so keep an eye out for those too!
After you leave the Hickman Bridge loop, just before returning to the main trail - keep an eye out for a little trail offshoot - it’ll take you just over 1/4 of a mile and you’ll be treated to some pretty incredible wide open vistas of a gorgeous, verdant valley with a river running through it - so beautiful!!
The lovely Fremont River runs along the first part of the trail. All along the hike you’ll be treated to really interesting and beautiful rock formations, plateaus, geological wonders, and wildlife - we saw tons of birds and even a Kangaroo Rat!!
There’s a parking lot at the trailhead, as well as street parking and some decent bathrooms. It’s a popular trail deeper into the park that gets pretty crowded - but definitely worth it and the trail is wide enough to pass easily most of the way.

This is an offshoot of the Rim Overlook Hike and is only 1.5 miles round trip. Not as steep and goes to an arch. This is what most people do – it definitely had more people on the trail. We did this after doing the Rim Overlook which is harder but has exceptional views.

If you want to hike one trail in Capitol Reef, this might be it! It's not the easiest hike as you climb steps up a cliff and then some uneven terrain until you reach the arch. Along the way, I encountered a couple Bighorn Sheep sunning themselves on a rock ledge. All that being said, don't forget the camera.

Great little hike. We went in July but started at about 7:45 am, so it wasn't too hot yet. Easy to find trailhead. Easy parking. Well marked. While we were there, we had the whole natural bridge to ourselves. Spectacular scenery. About 2 miles round trip. I highly recommend.

This might be the busiest trail in the park. The hike is definitely family friendly, but go early or late in the day if you want to get pictures of the bridge without tons of people underneath it. Not a lot of shade en route either.

Nice moderate hike that is easily accessible! The hike begins by a nice stream in the valley, and goes through some varied scenery. Definitely worth the effort.

While I did not get to see every hike in CRNP, this was the best hike our group made in the park. It is also listed number one for the park on AllTrails. I will say you get a little bit of everything the park has to offer, an arch bridge, water tank formations, domes, views, moderate elevation, a canyon and finally a flowing creek. It is the combination of all of this that makes this really the signature experience for the park. The bridge, while nice, will not overwhelm you if you have recently been to Moab or Zion. It is the hike and scenery in its entirety that makes it a "MUST DO".
At 2 miles round trip and 400 feet of elevation, it is not difficult at all. Our slow group of 16 made it there and back in an hour with tons of pictures. Perhaps the biggest challenge is getting a parking space. The lot is tight so go early and beat the crowds. With that said it really is the signature hike for the park so make the time and effort to do so and you will be rewarded.
