beautiful. gorgeous, very pleasant place with a fantastic view.
wizard is really cute little islet.
too bad the ferry wasn't open for a visit.
they had just opened the park so there was still snow al around.
one must see national park.
my second trip, but my wife and her friend were first timers.

WOW! If I could give it more than 5 stars I would. I've seen a lot of our country and this place is now right up toward the top of places to see. We had a beautiful day to see the lake. The road wasn't open all the way around but we were able to get around 60% of it. Lots of places to pull over and see the lake. The color of blue at the lake is like nothing I've seen before. There wasn't a ripple in the water, it was just like looking at the sky. The reflection off the water was stunning. We got there around 9:30 and stayed around 4 hours. It would have been nice to walk to the bottom and be at the water edge but the 2.2 mile walk would have been to much for my wife on the way back up. If you have the chance to go I'd highly recommend it.

Travelled to Crater Lake from Crescent City, CA in early June. Once past Medford, OR the drive was very picturesque. Took us about 4.5 hours total driving time , went at a very leisurely rate. Obviously the time of year you go has a huge impact of what is available. On June 5, the West Rim Drive was only open as far as Discovery Point. View from there was beautiful. We visited the Annie Creek and Rim Village gift shops, both were quite large, and had a good assortment of merchandise. In my opinion, there is no need to spend more than 1 day here. Even when more of the park opens later in the summer, you can easily do the 33 mile loop, visit shops and stop at view points in a single day, quite easily.

Together with John the guide I had an amazing experience! He know a lot about the area!
He picked me up from my stay and brought me back as well! The crater lake is a very nice hike, not to difficult :)
If you want to get in contact with John his phone number is +254 708 803364

North Entrance was closed but nobody was smart enough to post a sign for drivers coming to Crater Lake. Fortunately a waitress at the lunch place gave us brief instruction, and we got lost anyway. Twice, my GPS led us to the middle of the jungle. How can I turn left or right. There was no road. Finally called the emergency assistance and found the Entrance. First time seeing the sign after 1hr and 45mins.
All roads around the lake were closed. No parking near the Lodge. You had to drag your bag several hundred yards to the hotel.
I no longer need to look at the lake. All these had ruined my mood of personally seeing the lake. Wasting my $300+ a night room. Sad.

This was my first time visiting this National Park, and it was absolutely stunning. There are several areas to stop and take pictures, and the views are absolutely wonderful.

Spectacular! At 7am the West & South entrance was open, by 11am, when we arrived at the Park entrance, we were turned away due to snow and ice. So disappointed, we were four miles away from the park, but the Ranger said we couldn't go in, but that being said the drive there was amazing. From the bottom to the top there was a 13 degree temperature drop. The trees were huge and amazing. We will definitely have to come back when the weather is better.

My first & only issue with the park was when we were entering. The attendant at the booth said there was 'no visibility' today. We were bummed but it was only our first day (of 2), we were getting in for free (we are military) and we had already drove all the way up, so we decided to still go up. We had seen several cars turn around ahead of us after talking to the attendant, presumably because she had told them the same thing.
Turns out, while it was not a beautiful clear blue skies day, it was far from 'no visibility!' We could see everything, all the way to the other side of the lake, 95% of the time! There were a couple times, when we were further up one of the sides of the mountain, that visibility dropped to 0% and we could see nothing but clouds. But that would last 30 seconds if we were just driving. We ended up doing the Rim Drive and saw everything virtually the entire time! So, in conclusion, if the booth attendant says there is 'no visibility' take that with a grain of salt!
The Park is gorgeous though, even outside of the Lake, though that is the obvious star. We also walked Godfrey Glen as we were leaving the 2nd day. I honestly don't remember if there were any stairs at the beginning but otherwise, it's an easy stroll through the woods with some views of the gorge (nothing crazy). If we are able to do it when our kids are older and not babies, we will be back so properly hike more of the paths and go down to the water.

I have lived in Oregon my entire life and have always known about Crater Lake but I had never gone until today. BREATHTAKING! I seriously can't believe I have lived within a few hours of this place and have never been. So beautiful. I wish I had time to tour around a little bit more!

My husband and I along with another couple flew into Eugene, Oregon to visit Crater Lake. We stayed two nights nearby and had one full day to explore Crater Lake. It is a great bargain for seniors who have a National Park Pass. We arrived around 11 am and stayed until 4 pm. We brought granola bars and just snacked on them in the car. We stopped at several overlooks, the gift shop, and hiked one trail. The blue color of the lake was mesmerizing! I probably took over 100 pictures that day at all the overlooks. This was the highlight of my 12 day Pacific Northwest trip!

I need some advice I’m planning to come here on a Thanksgiving weekend since I have to change all my plans due to the mandate in California. I see that the Rim Village is the only open area of this park, can I still be able to see the Crater Lake/Volcano from that location and take some good photos? Thank you and I appreciate the help.

Yes, there are spots along the well developed trail where you will have great views of the lake and the island. The trees are the only problem which will impede your view so you have to look for a good spot and there are several viewing areas to choose from. good luck and stay healthy

How long should we spend at Crater Lake to enjoy it?
My husband and I are planning a week long trip to Oregon this coming summer...one of the main reasons I wanted to go was when I saw pictures of Crater Lake! It's too beautiful to miss.
So far our trip starts us in Portland, then spend two days traveling the coast, and the plan is to drive from Newport to Crater Lake...which is about 4.5 hours. Plan: We leave Newport at 8am and arrive at Crater Lake around noon and spend the rest of the day exploring Crater Lake, then find a hotel in the area (which we haven't chosen yet). So far what I've read is that there is a beautiful drive around road and also some short hikes, which I believe we'd do...Is from Noon to say maybe five or six pm enough time to enjoy it?
Thank you!!

I believe the park is open, but some facilities are closed. Now, things might change because of the fires, so be aware of that. Checks with the parks service to get more information.

I’ve been to Crater Lake twice. Staying at lodges in the park and at Inns outside the park had not been comfortable. Accommodations’ condition, which is below standard, appears to be a situation that we have to put up with regretfully. Crater Lake is so blue and gorgeous though! The hike down to the boat landing is fun although it could be challenging in certain portions of the trail. A hiking stick is helpful.

Hi - if you only have a single day at Crater Lake, what would you do?

We spent one day there. Drove the scenic rim drive and stopped at all the viewpoints. Did 2-3 short easy hikes (to Plakni Falls, Pinnacles, Godfrey Glen). Ate lunch at the historic lodge in Rim Village and walked along the rim, went in visitor center. All that and there was time to spare... you could do a longer hike or take a trolley or boat tour.

What is the best way to fly to the area? Fly into Portland or Reno, NV? looks close to the same distance/price pretty comparable.
