Although the hike is steep going down, the views you get are beyond breathtaking. The actual color of the water changes as the further you descend. I did take a dip in the water (you must) although wasn't as cold as i expected, actually was refreshing. The hike back up is a little tough but I'm used to hiking, so wasn't to bad, take your time and enjoy the views. Chipmunks are everywhere.

So the trail down to the lake is mainly covered with lots of switchbacks. The payoff is seeing the lake up close.
We were there on July 6, 2023, and unfortunately the boats were not operational at that time.
I think the hike would have been a better payoff if we could have utilized the boat.

The hike is very steep. Currently, it is not worth the effort since the boats aren’t running. The vantage point isn’t as grand as from the top. The water was too cold to swim in. If you did brave it, you’d have to make that mile plus hike in damp clothes.

My best advice is get here early! We arrived at 7:15am, hiked down and had the lake to ourselves for about 30 min. It felt like we were the only 2 people in the world. As we hiked back up around 8:15, there were quite a few others on their way down. And when we got to the top around 8:45, the parking lot was at least 2/3rds full.

As many others have pointed out, this is a steep climb down and then back
up. We are early 50s, not particularly fit and managed to hike up in 28 minutes (21 min down). It is not difficult in that the path is clear.

The colour of the lake looked different- darker - than the previous afternoon from the rim. It was too cold for us to swim. But braver souls than us seemed intent as we saw them on their way down with towels in hand.

Overall, worth the hike.

This is obviously an easy hike down and a difficult hike back up. But it is very much well worth it. We walked down in the morning and spent a hour or so hanging out by the lake. Unfortunately the boats were not running so that was all we could do. The water was amazingly clear and a refreshing feeling on our feet. If you can make it back up this is definitely something you want to do even if you are not going on the boats.

One word...Awesome! The trail is pretty steep and is about a mile down and a mile back up. It is pretty tough coming back up in the sun, but I'm 62 and in reasonable shape and had no problems. The trail itself is in great condition. Our original intent was to take a boat tour...but they were not open for the Summer yet, so we decided to take a swim in the lake instead. It's tough getting down to the water because there are so many rocks, but once we got in the water...wow! So cold and so clear! It felt soooo good. Once we got back to the top of the trail, I wished I could go back down and swim some more. Highly recommended! Tips: Swim by the little shed where people dive off of the rocks. Also, don't do this hike unless you want to swim or take a boat tour as the views are not better than from the rim.

Not long, but steep trail down to the lake level. We did not know this ahead of time, but people jump off a particular rock near the bathrooms into the lake. One guy did so when we were there and the water was brisk given his reaction. This would be a glorious place to cool off on a hot summer day. Bring a bathing suit and especially water shoes or sandals since everything is rocky. I would have waded out onto the rocks if I had had the appropriate footwear. There are many benches to stop and rest on the way up, which was a bit strenuous for us baby boomers. This was my favorite experience in the park.

The trail sounded hard, I did take as many rest as needed when I was walking back to the parking lot. You can see the lake while on the trail. It was not too hard for me.

Yes, the hike is hard. If you've read a single review you know that. But how "hard" is hard? I was able to drag my 50-year-old size 20 women's bottom with a wonky knee down and up the trail. I took my hiking poles and the down was harder than the up (because of the knee). Took us about 35 min down and about 65 up. Anyone in moderate condition or better can do this trail.

The hardest part was actually scrambling over the rocks on the way into the water. They are large and a bit slippery when wet (though almost all are wedged into place, so you don't have to worry about them moving).

The water is SO clear that you can see down about 70 feet. And SO blue. I did get yelled at by a ranger for being too far from shore, so don't expect to get a "real" swim in, just a splash.

The chipmunks on this trail are VERY friendly. So folks, please stop feeding them.

Go in the cooler part of the day, bring water and a swimsuit and it is totally worth it.

Amazing - the water is crystal clear. Make the effort and hike down you will be rewarded and think of the calories you will burn on hike back up!!
