This is the perfect experience because you get to hold a puppy of a future race legend. We have been to Denali twice and this is a must visit spot. The dogs and handlers all love what they are doing and it shows. And then to top it off, Jeff King is such a good story teller and comic. The new treadmill for the sleds is ingenious. The puppies running in their wheel was fabulous since they were doing it on their own. We absolutely love this place and we are quite sure that you will too.

The Husky Homestead is a perfect combination of quality time with champion pups (as well as actually puppies!) and a fascinating overview of what it takes to have a competitive sled dog team.
What wowed us about the tour was the personal touches. From the moment you get out of your car, friendly staff members are there to greet you (puppies in hand) for you to meet and hold. It's clear the staff love what they do and love the dogs.
Our guide for the day was sled dog expert Amanda Otto who just recently completed the Iditarod this past March. She was so knowledgeable about the sport and painted a picture for us of not only what is required to have a competitive team of dogs, but the care, love, and passion underneath it all.
Bottom line --- this tour was 90 minutes of stepping into the world and behind the scenes of a musher. It was full of sweet surprises and Instagrammable moments. Worth every penny.

If you’ve made it this far to Alaska, then you need to go to the Husky Homestead! Very well organized and absolutely inspiring as the staff AND JEFF KING -for goodness sakes!!!- gave some tourists like us a taste of the Mushers world and a lesson about the amazing Alaskan Husky! Mr. King is a treasure and a magnificent presenter with laugh out loud commentary about his adventures. If you consider yourself “an animal person”, you NEED to go snuggle with a pup, see and hear the dogs excitement to participate, and smile with people lucky enough to work with them!

Visited this place today and it was a HUGE highlight! A very up-close look at the operation including housing, breeding, training and racing. Personal talks from experienced trainers and racers, including the great Jeff King!

This was the highlight of our entire Alaska trip! Educational and engaging, we got to meet Iditarod champion Jeff King and his amazing canine athletes and staff! If you enjoy dogs, be sure to check this out. We learned tons and came away impressed and inspired! Note that this is not a tour that allows you to ride.

This was a great combination of experience with the dogs and their trainers as well as with Jeff King, owner and winner of the Iditarod 4 times. Very informative about how the dogs are bred, trained and cared for, how they perform on the sleds and the races. Jeff does a great job of explaining what it is like to be a musher. He does so with a great sense of humor and masterful presentation skills.
If you love puppies, you will love the time they allow you to pet and hold the puppies.
First class presentation and first class facility.
If you are interested in dogs and the Iditarod, this is a must for any visitors in Denali.

My visit to Jeff King's Husky Homestead was a wonderful addition to my Denali Park visit!! The Husky Homestead team was communicative about the start time for the event and instructions on how to get to the property.
Upon arrival, I got to snuggle with an adorable husky puppy for a few minutes. The puppies were then collected and the group was seated for the "outdoor" part of the presentation. We got to see the dogs in action and learn more about their training. The group then moved inside (no dogs) for Jeff's presentation on life in Alaska and his experiences with the Iditarod race. Jeff's presentation was informative and entertaining.
Husky Homestead is located close to the park entrance and accessible via car. It offered a different view on Alaska and a non-hiking experience at Denali. Would highly recommend!

Do you pick up at Denali Princess Wilderness lodge? And do you allow rides in the practice sleds?
Carrie S
Denali National Park and Preserve, AK11 bidrag
Hello!
Yes, we do provide transportation from the Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge.
Our summer tours are a visit to our Homestead, and since we are home to 4x Iditarod Champion Jeff King, we continue to focus on training our canine athletes year round - which means that rides are not part of the equation.
Please let us know if you have any more questions! We'd love to have you visit us during your time in Denali.
Best,
Carrie

Is this tour wheelchair accessible ?
Carrie S
Denali National Park and Preserve, AK11 bidrag
Yes, our tour is wheelchair accessible. We have two transport chairs at our tour location if needed by guests, and our vehicles can transport collapsible wheelchairs if given advance notice. For guests that require a lift for their wheelchair or scooter, we added a vehicle with a lift to our fleet in the summer of 2018. If a lift is needed we request that bookings be made directly with our office so that we may arrange an earlier pick-up time than normal to ensure that guests and their party arrive on time for the start of our presentation.
At present time we do not have ADA bathrooms on sight, but a remodel is planned for this spring and we anticipate it being complete by the time we open for the season on May 12, 2019.

which dog sledding activity tour did you do? Enjoy it?
Carrie S
Denali National Park and Preserve, AK11 bidrag
Hello Selfspa!
Since you posted this question to Husky Homestead, I can really only answer on behalf of us - so thank you for your interest!
Our presentations are broken up into three parts, the first of which is "puppy time"! Our guests are greeted with puppies and given the opportunity to cuddle, snuggle and take photos. Once everyone wraps up there, our outdoor presentation begins. This portion is focused on the animal aspect of mushing: we teach you about the Alaskan Husky breed of dog; how we raise, train and name them; and where they go if they don't spend there whole lives with us. Since we are continuing to train our dogs during the summer months, we plan our training runs to occur during our tours so that our visitors can see how everything works, as well as see (& hear) the enthusiasm that our dogs have for what they do. Our teams also run on a 50' treadmill for a couple of minutes before they dart off into the woods to complete their run.
Once the outside portion wraps up, we take everyone inside for a presentation that focuses more on the human aspect of mushing: you'll hear stories from the trail; hear what it's like to run the Iditarod; as well as learn it's like to live here in rural Alaska. You will see some gear that we use in both training and racing, and once that wraps up there is some time for questions of our staff. Those that wish to do so can shop for a souvenir before we load everyone up and return them to their pick-up locations.
We often hear that while the puppies were great fun, most of our guests comment that they had fun AND learned something during their time with us.
If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to reach out. We'd love to have you join us!
Happy Trails,
Carrie S.

Hello - is there any difference in this experience if someone books directly with you versus books with Holland America as one of their excursions?
Carrie S
Denali National Park and Preserve, AK11 bidrag
Hello Joy P!
There is no difference in the experience depending on how you book your visit with us.
We do allot a certain number of spaces to some of our partners, but once those spaces are filled the company will often contact us to see if we have more spots available. If you find that a date and time that you were interested in is not available through your tour company or travel agent, give us a call so that we can double check things on our end.
Also, after reading another answer here, we do not currently offer any individual tours. All of our visitors join us during one of our regularly scheduled tour times. For our 2018 season those times are: 8:30am, 2:00pm and 7:00pm.
If you have further questions, visit our website or give us a call!
Thank you!

Coming your way the very end of August. Will there be puppies then? Thank you!
Carrie S
Denali National Park and Preserve, AK11 bidrag
Yes! While they may not be a litter that belongs to Husky Homestead, we often welcome puppies from other mushers during our summer season. :) Our dogs are known for their friendly nature, and training begins with socialization... and you can help! Other mushers sometimes even seek us out so that their little ones can begin early training as well!
We look forward to meeting you!

Hallo... We are planning to visit Denali on July 01 to July 03, 2017. How far along we have to reserve.? We have about 8 adults and 4 kids. Do you give a group tour and price? We will stay at Denali Park Hotel, 247 George Park Hwy, Healy AK 99743. We plan to rent a car from Anchorage, Should we go by car to your place or get pick up.? Please advise. Thx

Hello! Thank you for your interest in Husky Homestead!
We encourage guests to book early to ensure that you can join us on the date and tour time that you would like. If there are any changes to your itinerary, we do offer a 4 hour cancellation for a full refund.
Currently we do not offer any group discounts, however we do offer a 10% Military discount - and you would need to telephone us in order to take advantage of that.
Since we do not pick-up as far north as the Denali Park Hotel, we would suggest that you meet us at a location that we do offer transportation from. The McKinley Chalet Resort is our furthers north pick-up, and is also the closest to you. We suggest allowing 30 minutes to drive from Healy to allow for any issues, as well as to allow yourselves time to park and be ready for pick-up outside the main lobby at your scheduled pick-up time.
Please feel free to contact us if you have any further questions, or need assistance in booking a visit!
Best,
Carrie S.

Hi susanshewmaker!
Thank you for you interest in Husky Homestead!
Yes, we do pick-up from the McKinley Chalet Resort.
This time of the year we are not as busy, so booking once you arrive in Denali would be just fine.
Reservations can be made at the front desk of the Chalets.
We hope to see you soon!
Kind regards,
Carrie S.
