Denali National Park is such a unique experience. We were with a land tour group after our cruise. Actually, the closest view of Mt Denali isn't actually from the national park (that is from Talkeetna and also at McKinley View Lodge). But visiting the national park is so worth it. We were there for an afternoon. It was warm and sunny that day, so we didn't see much wildlife. The visitors center is very nice as was the cafe and gift shop. Be sure to take a bus tour as cars are not allowed on the park drive any more. We went back in the evening for a guided nature hike on some of the many walking paths there, and we saw moose as we were leaving the park after our hike. All in all, very worth visiting.

My husband, teenaged son, and I were able to visit this national park for two days as part of a land tour of the interior of Alaska. We wish we could have ha even more time to experience more of what the park has to offer. The scenery was beautiful and we saw some wildlife on one of the park tours. The visitor's center has a lot (displays, restaurant, etc.) and is a great place to start a visit to the park. Highly recommended.

We did the bus shuttle 43 mile turn around. It was awesome incredible views. We made the 30% club of Denali because we saw it for about three minutes and then it disappeared ,lol !

Highly recommend seeing Denali and spending some time in the park when you are in Alaska it is breathtaking. I recommend a couple days unless you are going to do a lot of hiking. Not much in the town of Denali except gift shops, coffee and ice cream shops. I recommend the visitor center, a lot to see, very educational.

We took the hop on hop off 6 hour bus ride in Denali National Park. This was a long bus ride on a hot bus with okay views only. We experienced very few animal sightings and no sightings of Mount Denali as it was surrounded by clouds. Our bus driver was very nice and very informative but we didn't feel like this was worth our time for the amount of time it took. I would not recommend this tour. We had other activities on our trip that allowed us to see more animal sightings AND we had a perfect clear view of Mt.Denali the next day on the road on our way to Talkneeta.

What a beautiful park. To see the Denali peak, it is best viewed from the south. With that said, the park isn't just about the Denali peak. The park is an amazing beautiful place. Right now the road into the park is only open about half way due to rebuilding a bridge that was washed out. You can only reach the road further into the park by tour bus. Keep in mind that there are 2 buses. A shuttle bus and a tour bus. Don't expect the shuttle bus driver to tell you anything. Ours refused to talk to us or answer any questions and it made for an unenjoyable ride. The scenery made up for the cranky bus driver.

Nice to know there are places like this left to see. The views were fantastic the wild animals were visible sometimes a set of binoculars was needed, but still, plenty you could see with the naked eye. We had a clear day which I understand is not always the case to see the mountaintop. Still cold in June but not much snow on the ground but plenty up on the mountains.

The park may be named Denali but if you want a view of Denali, you are much better seeing it from the south side. We were extremely disappointed as we thought the park offered great views of the mountain. We even stayed at a lodge a mile from the entrance. What a waste of time and money - we corrected that the following day and stayed in Talkeena although there are other places along the highway with great views as well.
When you drive into the park you can see the mountain at mile marker 9 but of course, the park has no mile markers. You can continue to mm 13 but the mountain cannot be seen from there. We saw no wildlife apart from a rabbit yet along the Alaskan highway on the drive up we saw bison, mountain goats, and black, brown, and grizzly bears on the side of the road.
I would definitely give the park a pass if I were in the area again.
We drove down from Fairbanks which was our biggest mistake. From Anchorage on a clear day you can see the mountain within an hour.

Denali National Park is amazing. It is wild, remote, nature at its best. The first time we went in May, 2013, we did not see the mountain, but we did see quite a bit of wildlife. We went back in July, 2023, with our RV. We stayed in Teklanika campground and knew that we would not be able to go as far in because of the rock slide. We still enjoyed it very very much. We did not see the mountain while we were in the park (We did get some amazing views for 3 days afterwards from the Parks highway and Talkeetna.) We saw some caribou, mostly far away, one giant guy up close, some sheep, far away, a mama moose and her baby at the entrance. It's not a zoo. It's the wilderness. If you go in with your expectations of seeing animals around every corner, you're probably going to be disappointed. Thank God we have these areas where the animals can roam free!

Hello I'm going on a cruise to Alaska next month 5/15 - 5/22. I will be at Anchorage for 3 day 2 night after my Princess cruise. It's shoulder seasons. My wish was to visit the Denali NP and Wonder Lake, but found out after doing research that wonder lake not going to open until June. :( Do you recommend I still do the shuttle bus to Toklat River? Will I see wildlife and find good hiking trails to go on? Which ones do you recommend? Thank you in advance for your advice!

Denali, Valdez is great too and in Anchorage we ate at a great place called F Street Station.
Prices of food in Alaska as a whole are pricey. Cost of flying food in.

Hi, I was wondering if three people want to take the School bus trip into Denali, how do we book it in advance for June? Who do we contact : I did not see reference to an actual tour group. Thanks, Linda

We took the Kantishna tour which is a private company and was more like 12 hours long and goes to the end of the road. They are the only ones allowed to do this privately as they own the lodge there. The park service runs the other buses to the best of my knowledge and can be booked in advance on their site. We did both the tundra wilderness tour and the longer one to Kantishna. Long days but we figured why are you in Denali?
Skrevet 11. april 2019
Not unless you are a Ranger. The single road in and out would not be passable.
Skrevet 11. februar 2019
What is the best way to see the park ? Take the narrirated tour bus or the national park bus where you can get off and on.
Skrevet 10. oktober 2018
Narrated bus tour was great. Our driver had actually lived in the area for two straight winters and had been leading a tour for 12 years. Guy was the best. If you love the park and wanted more time you could rent a vehicle once you knew where you wanted to go. While we were there, two couples were waiting for a big bull moose to get up from his resting place in a meadow. Tours can’t allow to that type of wait time. And that moose was massive....

My family is taking the bus trip to Wonder Lake. My kids are 10 and 12. Our tour leaves at 6:45AM. I know they don't give you food and there is nothing to buy along the way. Are you allowed to bring food on the bus? We aren't due back until 6:45PM and not sure we can go all day without eating anything.TIA
Skrevet 5. august 2018
Yes! You are allowed to bring food and snacks in your back where ever you go. Just make sure you keep up with the contents because recycling is a huge deal and they want to keep the park clean. The wilderness your provided a snack box and water for the long trip. The place you are staying at should have the ability to make a lunch box but the option is up to you. Ultimately bring in the trip what you need.

Were you allowed to get down from the bus (aside from rest room breaks) for few minutes to enjoy the scenic beauty and take photos?
Skrevet 20. juni 2018
Alaska/ Denali has been my summer destination for the last 26 years. There are two types of concessionary buses going into the park.
The SHUTTLE bus is the MOST economical! On this bus your are allowed to get off to hike at any point as long as no wildlife has been spotted within 1/2 mile. After the hike, flag down the next shuttle bus going your direction and continue your trip (seats must be available). You can also change buses. If you pass a spot/ animal sighting and you would like to take a longer look...have your driver flag down the next bus going your way and hop on (seats must be available). Your ticket is good for the day. We like to take the shuttle to Eielson as we feel animal sighting past that point are slim. Usually your bus will allow about 30 minutes at Eielson, but you can always catch another bus back and stay longer for a ranger led hike! However; I have been to the end of the road and everyone should make that journey at least once! Tickets to Eielson run about $35.00 a day and you must supply your own food and water. Shuttle buses stop for animal/ landscape shots, but time is limited as the shuttle must stay on schedule. Drivers will NOT let you off to take photos!!!! If you love wildlife and fabulous scenery, the time on the shuttle will pass very quickly!!!!
The Tour Bus is the second choice, but can be very pricey! This is over $100.00 a day! You must stay with this driver all day. They do supply you some type of food and drink for the day. Your bus has drop down screens to allow you a closer view of the animals (the driver has a scope/ camera that feeds pictures to the drop screens). This bus only goes to mile 62! Tour busses load first at the hotels and finally make there way to the Wilderness Access Center (WAC) for the final loading. If you catch it at the WAC, you will most likely end up in a back seat! If you choose the tour, I would highly suggest you only consider the Tundra Wilderness Tour!!!!!! I have not heard good thing about the HISTORY tour!
Wishing you a fabulous visit to Alaska!

Did you and other passengers get opportunity to get down from the bus for few minutes (aside from just rest room brakes), to enjoy the scenic attractions and take photos? Were the seats in the bus comfortable?
Skrevet 20. juni 2018
Yes, there were several opportunities to get out besides for bathroom breaks. There was so much to see I do wish they let us out even more though since I take a lot of photos.
As far as the comfort of the seats, you need to realize there are two types of buses. The tan ones are used on the more expensive tours and have better seats (and are needed since the trips are longer) than the olive green ones which are used on the shorter trips.
Skrevet 25. juni 2018
I plan on booking passage on one of the transit buses all the way to Kantishna. I know these are 'school bus style' buses but I am 6'3" and am wondering about seat legroom. Hopefully they are configured for 'adults' and not schoolkids.
Any observations on this? it's a long ride......
Skrevet 16. januar 2018
From memory, this was two years ago, the legroom on the old school buses isn’t great. But maybe you could get an aisle seat and that would help you to stretch out. Or maybe you could get a seat right down the back so you could stretch your legs out down the aisle of the bus.
These tour buses are the only way to see the park though unless you’re lucky enough, like we have been once, to have a friend that lives in Alaska and wind the state lottery and is allowed to drive their own private vehicle around, giving you more leg room. Good luck.
Skrevet 17. februar 2018
Where did you take the bus from to Denali? Anchorage ? Whittier?
And i believe you are taking about the motorcoach... correct?
Thanks for the info.
Skrevet 9. oktober 2017
We made our arrangements through the Alaska RR as part of a package. The bus picked us up at our hotel near the park.
