Beautiful, icon views of Glacier National Park! Love the areas where you can sit and look at the water and just relax. There are many trail options from easy to hard around the lake as well. Taking a boat cruise is another great way to get off the beaten path and enjoy Glacier NP!

Very beautiful, peaceful lake with gorgeous views. At the boat dock there are boat trips that you can book and the have canoes that can be rented at a very reasonable rate per hour. You can also just walk along shore and enjoy. Some people were having a picnic lunch and just sitting back to enjoy.

The first thing that you come across when you enter going to the sun road is the lake.
It's huge, lovely and serene.
There are points where you can get off and take pictures or sit besides the lake.

The rocks are not nearly as colorful as the photoshopped ones you see online but it's still worth stopping and looking. The lake is so peaceful and serene!

Now that Lake McDonald is again accessible without a Sun Road Ticket, we visited again and enjoyed it as much as before. The long distance views from the beach next to the Village Inn, from the boat dock & the Apgar Picnic Area are the best for lake/mountain peak photos. The beach also gives you a chance to photograph the famous multi colored rocks beneath the water.

Peaceful lake with views from all sides. The largest lake in Glacier National Park with the Lodge sitting on its shore and plenty of hikes around the outside.

Beautiful - Tues after Memorial Day, not much traffic which was great - didn't go in the Lodge, wasn't clear signage that it was open to the public. Going to the Sun road closed just past there at Avalanche pass so not much to do but turn around and come back out of the Park.

We didn't stay at the lodge because IMHO it's not worth the price. (Like many of the National Park lodging places it's outdated, small with no amenities - except location). We DID take the boat tour, which is well worth it - and you don't have to stay at the lodge to do it (but allow plenty of time to get there.) You can also just stop at the lodge (driving or on Red Bus) and just enjoy it for a while and then travel on.

View from Apgar Village for additional views of the lake. You can also drive around to Rocky Point trail for a short hike to the lake. Foliage was beautiful.

Beautiful lake in GNP! We were there a day after the lodge closed for the season so the area wasn’t crowded at all. Enjoyed walking around the grounds with calm lake water and stunning backdrop. The Apgar part of the lake provides a different view of the surrounding mountains, beautiful! Knowing it was formed from glacier carving during the ice age makes it extra special.

Is there anyone out there that has been on all 4 of the boat rides on the lakes and could tell us which ones they thought were the best? We are thinking we cannot go on all 4. Thanks.

The Many Glacier boat ride is a great adventure in a unique area of the park. The Lake McDonald ride covers much beauty. You can’t go wrong on your choice.

Hi, I'm going to West Glacier Aug 22 until August 24. Did you see any grizzly's on your hikes?
Skrevet 13. august 2020
Bears are incredibly mobile and fast. They can wander an unbelievable # of miles a day, simply foraging for berries and grubs.
They tend to be sniffing around the ripening huckleberry bushes and digging for grubs. In general you MAY or MAY NOT see one out in the distance.
=====
Are you wondering because you are scared of them or want to simply see them? There are many many days we go to Glacier without a single bear sighting anywhere...somedays yes.
=====
Most deadly bear encounters on hikes...no matter where in Glacier you hike...occur when you come around a hidden corner or from bushes that impede the view ahead of you. That startles the bear AND you.
Glacier has Grizzlies and many Black Bears too. They DO NOT stalk you. When you see one...do not approach or turn your back to them to get Selfies! And do not run after them to get your photos. Rangers are short staffed this year and visitors are taking a lot of dangerous chances getting out of their cars and chasing them...I KNOW who would do that? But just two weeks ago we witnessed about 6 cars stopped near Rising Sun and occupants chasing after the mama and 3 cubs for selfies.
Those people were incredibly lucky she ran up hill. Mama bears typically can spin around in a mini second to protect her cubs. The results have been gory and tragic before.
Please do not let others tell you that hiking in a line with others keeps you safe...you do not want to be the exact one in that line that a bear decides to charge of bluff charge.
Once you arrive...do not depend on other visitor's accounts...ask a Ranger instead.

I'm coming to Lake McDonald with my son. He is nine years old, and this is a special mother/son trip. He wants to lake fish, and Lake McDonald seems perfect for us. It seems lake fishing guides are hard to come by. Anyone know a guide who would be willing to take us out on a little fishing boat and teach us how to fish? We're planning for the start of August, 2019.

I would rent a boat from apgar village right at the shore and bring your own fishing pole. No need for a guide. You don't need a fishing license. I took my 6 yo with no luck fishing, but other people did catch trout. We rented a motor boat for 2hrs for 30 dollars.

We will be at Lake McDonald Thursday and only have a few hours can anyone recommend a short hike 1-2 hours
Are there bears in the area? Should I bring bear spray
Skrevet 23. mai 2018
There is a trail nearby. We had walking sticks with bells to make noise and frighten bears. Trail so close to road little to fear. Only trees to see. Best sights: trails on top of Going to the Sun Road, one wide open down to lake (short walk) the other across the road carved into a cliff. The views of the valley and mountains are incredible.
Skrevet 29. juli 2018
We camp outside the park since campgrounds are limited to 21 ft or 35 ft. You can’t drive anything longer than 21 ft on the Going to the Sun Road.
Skrevet 13. juli 2018
if I go there at mid-Aug, can I still see the snow-headed mountains, viewing from the lake McDonald? or all the snow will be melted? thanks.
Skrevet 28. april 2018
You will see snow there any time of year. You will also need a jacket since it's always cold. If you take "going to the sun road" you can probably find enough snow to have a snowball fight not too far from the road.
