We drove directly to the geology center and then walked along the trail towards the next stopping point on the rim Trail. There was lots of interesting information as well as lots of shade. It was a pretty easy walk and we took the bus back to the main visitor center and then walked along the rim back to our car. We pulled into Grand Canyon Park at about 8 AM and we’re leaving by 10:30 and avoided most of the crowds and the heat.

The park has polished examples of the different rocks that one sees along the rim. The type and age of the rocks is well documented.

3mile walk on the south rim paved trail with geology info! We wished we had done this before our Bright Angel hike bc it explains a lot about the geological layers of the canyon. Wonderful views and photo ops. Not crowded at all on the day we did it!!

This is the majority view, that great ages of time were required to carve the magnificent canyon, based upon the current rate of ablation. But there are river runners and geologists — in the minority, it’s true — who see evidence in the Canyon layers of relatively rapid formations and erosion. I am simply in awe of this amazing display of power and grandeur.

We visited with our three kids (6, 12 & 15 yrs) in late July. It was pretty hot, so this was an easy hike. The Grand Canyon Railway dropped us off near (up the stairs and past Verkamp's Visitor Center) one end of the Trail of Time, so it was a perfect choice for our intro to the GC. The trail is about 1.4 miles of paved flat walkway with beautiful views all along. Benches and small shade trees provide a respite from the heat of summer. Exhibits line the trail showing trillions of years of rocks found in the GC layers. It was probably very interesting, but my kids didn't slow down enough to appreciate them.

Total one-way hike is about 2 miles and you can catch the free shuttle at either end so you don't have to hike round trip. Incredible views along the way, plus a chronology of different rocks.

This trail is on the South Rim. As you walk west you come to the Trail of Time. It's really well done with each metre you walk marked out as 10 million years. It represents the depth of the Canyon and the rock formed during the time period, so they have displays of the different types of rock along the way. This continues for 2km, so 200 million years is represented along this trail. It makes you feel very insignificant in the big scheme of things... It's very well done. Highly recommended.

Along the rim trail are markers starting way back when the canyon was formed. There are different hunks of rock along the way that are labeled. Interesting to see the different rocks with a name and be able to touch them. The trail is paved and flat but very crowded. Take your time and enjoy. Of course there are amazing views along the way.

Upon arrival, we decided go straight to park at Verkamp's Visitor's Center, instead of to the main area & I loved that we did that! There were only a handful of people along the rim in that area, so our first views of the canyon were peaceful & amazing. We then hiked the Trail of Time as our first hike. We totally enjoyed this area.

There are large hands-on pieces of limestone, sandstone, and granite to show you close up what the layers of the canyon look like. Several signs that explain things further if you want detail, many, many viewing areas right on the rim, with very few people compared to the "named" viewpoints. We saw elk napping, and squirrels and birds close up. As we got closer to Mather Point, there were a LOT more people. Not that we don't like people...we just really liked being able to stare & stay in a spot without feeling like we needed to hurry to share with others. Along this trail, there are plenty of places for moments of solitude that we enjoyed for as long as we wanted.

Trail is paved & a great way to ease yourself into "hiking" in the higher altitudes. There are benches along the way to rest on as well & it's fairly shaded. Lots of cool, twisted, dead trees on the path...some of my favorite photos are from this trail.
