Beautiful location. Caves are impressive and tour interesting. I'd prefer no talking just looking but that's just me.

Three things: 1. Lehman Caves 2. The Bristle Cone Pines (oldest living things on the planet 3. Bortle scale of light pollution (there is very little) so the night sky is magnificent!
We stayed at the Hidden Canyon Retreat, a little off the main road (6 miles of winding dirt road) but worth it!

Excellent tour with Ranger Sadie, perhaps the best cave tour we've ever experienced! Ranger Sadie was a great communicator, full of information about the cave and easily answering questions. The cave itself was spectacular--unlike other caves where features a viewed from a distance, in Lehman Cave so many things were almost within an arm's length. It was great to be able to see stalactites, stalagmites, columns, etc, "up close and personal." But don't wait until the last minute, attendance is limited to 20 (reservations open 30 days in advance) and most tours sell out.

Thanks to Ranger Angela for an amazing tour! We had the first Grand Palace Tour of the day, and it was completely full. Be sure to book in advance if you want to secure a spot. There was a guy who showed up, and he was told there was only one spot left on a tour departing in 2 hours!!
The Grand Palace tour is 90 minutes long, and you can't bring anything with you other than your phone. Not even water! It's also cold so wear a jacket. The formations in this cave are beautiful, and there are a few that I don't recall seeing in other caves. Ranger Angela was very good about answering all of our questions and telling jokes. It really is worth the price of admission, which is $15. They have a shorter tour that's a bit cheaper if you don't think you can last the whole 90 minutes, but you'll miss out on the Grand Palace room which is the prettiest part of the whole cave! Definitely add this to your bucket list!

Every cave has unique features and Lehman caves is no exception. The tour route is well developed with safe walkways, handrail and stairs. Our tour guide was great and highlighted the unique features of the cave and the various rooms.

These caves were fantastic and an easy walk through with our ranger guide. Bryce was our park ranger guide and he was very knowledgeable, informative, and interesting, and really made our tour one of the best in any cave.

We took the shorter of the 2 tours, and it was absolutely worth it. Our guide was highly knowledgeable and friendly. The cave formations are breathtaking. We even spotted an elusive "cave cricket". The walkway is flat, and though there are stairs, they're in small sets and weren't bothersome. Claustrophobia wasn't bad... there are a few spots where you need to watch your head or walk sideways to get through, but most of the time you're walking through roomy areas with high ceilings. I wish the lighting were just a bit better in spots for photography purposes, but just a suggestion.

We explored the Lodge Room tour which is 60 minutes in length. We've experienced other cave tours and this one was average. Our tour guide needed to add a little more excitement to the tour. Very quiet as opposed to other cave tour guides where they point out different formations that look like an animal, etc. It's an easy tour with no climbing. There are a few areas that you do have to duck down and walk sideways thru but for the most part very easy. Once you exit the cave there is a short hiking trail, which I recommend, but make sure you have good hiking shoes. I do recommend making reservations for the tours ahead of time as there was a line of visitors coming in without reservations that were trying to get on a tour which looked tight. Lots of parking. Our tour was at 10:30 am and when finished the parking lot was filled so I recommend booking an early tour.

Fascinating place to explore! Our guide Ripley was excellent and a fountain of information about the geology and history of the cave. We detoured to include this cave system in our road trip and are very glad we did. Definitely worth seeing.

Does anyone know if the caves are open during the government shutdown?
Skrevet 31. desember 2018
I assume no as the park rangers lead the tours!
Skrevet 17. januar 2019
Just read that there are some narrow spots in the caves. How narrow are the passages?

Not tragic. I was worried!!! If you can get through a turnstile at Disneyland - even if it's sideways - you are good. Also - the 69 steps are not all at once - some up, some down, more or less in the middle of the tour. I went on the 90 minute tour.

Is it fairly easy walking? Spouse walks OK but can't to surfaces that aren't too level and also can't bend over very well. Thanks.

Yes, there is a small town nearby called Baker, which is at the entrance to the park. There are a couple of small motels there and some minimal services. If you are willing to drive a little but (10 + miles, mostly gravel road) there is a hidden gem called Hidden Canyon Ranch just down the road. It is, by far, the best lodging in the area. Look it up on Trip Advisor.
