To be perfectly honest this was a little underwhelming. The walk into and out of the tube was better than the tube. Save yourself 15mins. Instead invest a couple of hours and do the crater walk.
As with most of Hawaii the parking is appalling and we were there in the shoulder season.

Our family loved visiting the Nahuku Thurston Lava Tube in Hawaii Volvanoes National Park. From the parking lot there is a short paved trail to the lava tube. Once inside you can exit out the back and return outside on a paved trail or go back through the lava tube.
The parking lot is very busy unless you go early. I went one day at 6:30 am and there were no cars at all. However they don’t light the cave until 8 am. I didn’t have a flashlight so I didn’t go very far. I didn’t expect a monster to get me but I didn’t want to take the chance.

The Thurston Lava Tube is a must do at this national park. The parking situation can be a pain as there is extremely limited parking (I think we circled around 3 times waiting for a spot to open). The trail itself is very easy to walk. The lava tubes are lit, so you don’t need to bring flashlights. This trail was very crowded when we went.

What a cool place! I just could imagine lava flowing through the tubes. Very educational for kids of all ages. There is a small hike but its not very far and it is easy to walk. There are bathrooms at the parking area but there are not many parking spaces. The vegitation that is growing around makes you think there is a dinosaur going to walk out at any moment.

From the parking lot (very few spaces) or the Kilauea Iki parking, it's an easy walk to the lava tube and through. You might want to bring your own flashlight even though it is lit per the pictures.

Wonderful experience. Walking through a lava tube. It is lighted( I think 8am.to 8 pm) and relatively easy to walk through..it can be wet with puddles of water and water dripping but nothing too inconvenient.
Cannot stress enough...get there early..make this the first stop of the day, and be there when it opens. The parking lot gets full and then you have to drive over to an overflow parking lot and hike down from there. Just be there early and enjoy this wonderful attraction in Volcano National Park.

A beautiful short hike to--and through--a well-lit lava tube. The hike from the parking area is absolutely wonderful through some rain forest The trail is mostly paved and not very steep. The tube itself is not that long, and is lit enough so you won't stumble. This was the first thing we did at the National Park. It is definitely a good part of the volcano experience. Definitely recommend for all ages.

Lava flows are fascinating: they start from deep down in the earth, erupt at the surface and the flow follows where ever gravity takes it. And sometimes there is an amazing tunnel created: such as Nahuku-Thurston Lava Tube.
While it’s a short walk, it really is incredible to think that Mother Nature created this (it has been enhanced with railings and some walkways). Check out my pics. You’ll start in the rain forest and descend into the bleakness of lava caves. The walk is fairly short. However, it’s unlevel and there are stairs. As you can see in my pic, there is a stair exit. This provides a really neat experience going from a stark, dark cave into a sun lit rain forest.

The Thurston Lava Tube is a nice stop while in Volcanoes National Park. Though the parking lot is not big you usually don’t have to wait too long since the walk is fairly short. You have to walk down then up some steps so this is not good for anyone with serious mobility issues. It is a cool place for photos.

There is a steep descent in order to get to the tunnel however it is worth it. The tunnel floor is relatively flat/even however it is damp. There is dim illumination. Once you leave the cave, you must climb a flight of stairs.

Hi, I would like to know about the Lava caves. All previous comments said the caves were closed and might not re-open. Did you do your tour in September 2019 and they are now open?

Is Thurston Lava Tube open?
I cannot find anything on the website, and the telephone number for the national park does not give any information and says they are closed every time I have rang, so can anyone help me?

It is in the area became active again and will be closed for some time it was south and east of the active volcano when I was there

I'm staying in Waimea. How long of a drive is it to the Lava tube and is that where we should start if we are doing it ourselves? Could anyone give us a sample itinerary for the day? Its just me and my boyfriend, no kids.
Thanks

The tube is real close to Kilauea and the kava flies down to the ocean. You should see Kilauea during day and night.
