One of the coolest things that I've ever done. An awesome experience. Easy to get to (decent to the entrance is somewhat steep but there are handrails).

Great hike for all skill levels, although there are stairs. The lava tube is intrinsically interesting and the overall experience is great for all ages, particularly younger hikers since it's short, easy and several interesting things to see.

Parking was sparse. People were rude. We came back after sunset and walked the trail from the back parking lot in the dark. We arrived at the lava tube and thankfully it was still lighted. The lights go off at 8:00 pm. It was very dark the whole time except in the tunnel.

I see little specific information on the Web to access lpoints of interest if you're disabled but still active and partially mobile, so here goes.
I have bad knees, and use a rubber-tipped walking stick for balance and for navigating inclines/declines. I was able to traverse the Thurston Lava Tube with my stick and thoroughly enjoyed viewing the world from underground.
To enter the Tube you must descend about 6 worn stone steps (with railing) plus a fairly steep stone ramp. The floor of the tube is flat but slightly uneven underfoot. Be aware that when I visited in May there was water dripping from the Tube ceiling, keeping the floor wet, with a light coating of mud and some puddles about a half-inch deep.
A flashlight with a wrist strap will be helpful. The Tube has low-intensity orange lights high on the walls, but there are darker stretches where it's hard to see where you step. Also, the Tube interior is rounded, so that the ceiling clearance is lower at the sides.
Leaving the Tube, you must climb 15-20 stone steps (again with railing). The steps are worn in the center from many generations of travelers.
I hope this information is helpful to you.

The path to the lava tube was very steep. Fortunately, there was a warning, so I (65+ with bad knees) had to opt out while the rest of my family went. Definitely, not accessible.

Walking through the lava tube is unique experience! The tube is lighted but not enough for taking photographs. Tube /tunnel is lighted enough to walk through it. Easy walk and anyone can cover it.

There are more interesting and larger lava tubes that can be appreciated, like Lava River Tube (1 mile in length) in Oregon. This short lava tube was created when the exterior of a lava flow cooled but insulated the lava on the inside which continued to flow until it was cut off or diverted leaving the hollow tube. This short lighted walk is like walking inside a giant culvert. For a real feel of a lava tube visit any one of a number of better tubes. If you cant make it to other lava tubes this will have to suffice.
On the plus side, to ingress and egress, it is a nice short walk through a rainforest.
With a small parking lot, parking can be problematic.

From the Kilauea Iki Trailhead parking lot, a short, half-mile walk through beautiful foliage leads to the Thurston Lava Tube, which was very neat to see! The tube itself was a bit damp and much shorter than I thought it would be, but it's a very easy walk. Placards at the official start to the loop describe how the tube was formed, which was neat to read about before trekking into the tube.
Note that, if you choose to park in the lot designated for the Thurston Lava Tube, there is a 30-minute time limit. There are no time limits at the Kilauea Iki parking lot, so I recommend parking there and taking the short walk to the tubes.

This is a cool, short hike. Our group of diverse ages and walking ability all enjoyed it. There's a one-way path you take down, go through the tube (lots of drips, a few puddles), then come out and go back up. The lush rainforest on the way down and up is really lovely.
The parking right at the tube site is limited; you're only allowed to park for 30 min. (just enough time) According to our NP app, the time we visited was "as busy as it gets" and we were able to slide into a parking spot without difficulty.
The other option is to park at the overlook nearby and hike there.

Fun little loop along the crater rim road. You walk downhill into the tube, short walk through it, then back up and around through the forest. There are some signs to educate you on plant life. Bathroom stop on the way back to parking lot. Parking is pretty limited but we had no issues since most people were going to the volcano lookout. Watch out for people crossing here. No need to spend more than 30 minutes at this stop.

Is Thurston Lava Tube open?
I cannot find anything on the website, and the telephone number for the national park does not give any information and says they are closed every time I have rang, so can anyone help me?

I'm staying in Waimea. How long of a drive is it to the Lava tube and is that where we should start if we are doing it ourselves? Could anyone give us a sample itinerary for the day? Its just me and my boyfriend, no kids.
Thanks

The tube is real close to Kilauea and the kava flies down to the ocean. You should see Kilauea during day and night.
