Joshua Tree NP does have great hiking, and according to AllTrials, this is the number one and one of my favorites. Outside of its spectacular 360 degree views, the two things you hear consistently about this trail are absolutely true, lots of stairs and no shade. We were fortunate to hike on a cool day that was also fairly windy. In spite of the 1,000 foot climb inside 1.5 miles, it was kind of cold at the top in the wind.

For the most part the most dramatic incline is in the first 3/4 of mile before you transverse the ridge. As you approach and cross the ridge it is actual fairly level; however, the small window is a wind tunnel for Pacific breezes looking to go from Lost Horse Valley to Queen Valley. After transversing the ridge, the wind was blocked but the incline resumed. You then pop out to an overlook of the Queen Vally with a rare mountain Joshua tree in a Y shape. From here the climb much gentler and more rounded to the top.

At the top you have incredible panoramic views of the entire western/Mojave half of the park. I can't think of a park where one spot has such a commanding view over the entire park. There is also an elevation sign at the top that is made for pictures. Afternoon sun is best for the sign picture but there are also great views to the west with the two snowcapped saints in the background.

In reality, without tall vegetation, the entire hike offers amazing views of the park, the valleys and the rocks. However, just because there is no shade does not mean there is no vegetation. There are all kinds of cacti, cholla, barrel and prickly pear as well as Mojave Yucca and sporadic Joshua Tree. We also saw some flowering plants along the trail.

In summary this is a really good hike that is rewarding at the top and all along.

A challenging hike with magnificent views of Joshua Tree National Park. It took us two hours to climb to the top, and about 45-50 minutes to descend the trail. You come down on the same trail as going up. The trail is wide and well maintained. There are many steps built into the trail, and the ones at the beginning are quite high steps. It levels out as you go up. It was quite busy and many people had come back for a repeat hike. We saw a mountain goat at the top.

This was a steeper climb that I thought it would be, based on what I had read before our trip. It isn’t a moderate trail. This is a difficult trail. The view is nice from the top, though. Make sure you have enough water!

We visited Ryan Peak while backpacking through Joshua Tree National Park (wilderness). Probably 35-40 people hiking that day. I didn't care for the Park Service's steep "check dams" to prevent erosion. Some up to 3' high. Not very hiker friendly. After pass last 1/2 mile to peak is mellow. Great view.

Decent climb with a great view. It gets narrow and windy in places so if you've got any kind of vertigo issues be really careful. Should be reasonably physically fit to attempt.

Great hike but make sure you get there early. It starts out going up and never relents for the entire assent. Great views at top and very windy.

We did this hike on a Tues, so there were lots of folks, but it never felt crowded. It's an out and back, climb up, downhill down hike, which are typically not my fav but the views were INCREDIBLE. Totally worth it. I actually thought the views from the halfway point looking out over the parking lot are were the most magnificent and snapped those on the way down. But the 360 views at the top were gorgeous too, with snow-capped peaks and vast expanse of desert in every direction.

It was a challenge trail for me due to 1.5 mile all the up hills to the summit. The day was windy and cold, it took me about 1.5 hours to get to the summit, 1 hour to get back. I felt good to be able to complete this trail, enjoyed the views along the way, and the 360C view on the summit

This is a nice challenging hike due to the elevation gain. The trail is well-marked and you can go at your own pace, overall I’d call this a moderate hike. Good views at the top and a real sense of accomplishment once you get there. Took us about 50 minutes on the way up and 40 minutes on the way down.

My wife and I thought the views were better at Keys View, so be sure to check that out too especially if hiking isn’t your thing.

This is more than a moderate hike. It can be somewhat challenging in parts as getting to the trail head is mostly uphill. We walked up when it was also very windy and gusty which added to the difficulty level. That said, it’s a beautiful hike with wonderful views along the way.
