We had the wrong spot to search and spent some time beating the bushes looking and then gave up. While leaving we saw the Marked on the other side of Key View Road. Turned around and had a hard time parking because this area has curbs, but did find Lost Horse Mine Road and were able to park there and walk to the Grave Site.
Could not read all of the marker but could still see his name. A part of this areas history about a miner that died on this lonely area. Was hard to find but worth the effort. Use care this seems to be a highway that is well used. Know the history before you goo.

Johnny Lang was a secretive gold miner in what is now Joshua Tree National Park.
His life (and death) was shrouded in mystery. Twice buried, his grave stands near the footpath which peters out at the remains of the Johnny Lang cabin. I took many photos of the junk and tin cans strewn about by the cabin's stone hearth.
This is where the going got rough. A good map and compass are necessary friends.
I suppose there are now electronic substitutes, but I picked up my topo map at an outfitters just north of the Park Visitor Center on the corner of Park Blvd and 29 Palms Highway.
Don't follow the stacked rock markers too far from the cabin, I determined that they for a hike back to a campground on the level (that's relative, nothing is anywhere near level).
The tailings from the mine become visible up on a far mountainside after about two miles from the cabin.
Don't be discouraged, it is tempting to be satisfied with just seeing the tailings.
The mine itself is near one of the highest points in the Park.
I don't know if Johnny Lang found real gold, but the view from the mine itself is more precious in my memory than a pocket full of the soft metal.
Plan on all day, I consumed a gallon of water and about 3 pounds of food.
Not for a novice.

We came across this while visiting Joshua Tree N.P. What an interesting surprise. The history behind this grave is a good read.

Located on the right side of keys view Rd if you're coming in from the Oasis visitor center. About 100 ft before passing Lost Mine Rd.
It was a great scavenger hunt for my family and I. Keep your eyes open!

Hard to find and that makes it cool- Really cool!
At first I couldn't figure out the riddle and was will to return
Initially I thought the grave and headstone was near the trail
If you read carefully, you'll discover where to search. Look for details in the other reviews. Or ask me a question, but the search is fun
Jonny Lang is not the blues guitarist who is alive and well. This Jonny Lang is a minerand his final resting place is the man behind lost horse mine
He left a note saying " gone for grub"
His body was found sometime later

I saw this on Tripadvisor and added it to our list. We got to Joshua Tree National Park and asked the ranger at the ticket booth where it was...and he had no idea. All I had were some street names from this site. Thank goodness they gave us a map. Once we were in the area, we stopped and plodded along, searching for a grave site that I assumed would be further out in the desert. It's not. It's right by the road. Lost Horse Mine Road to be exact. We made an adventure out of it, so it was kinda fun to try and figure out where it was located. It's nothing spectacular - hence the 3 rating, but I'd give it a 5 just because it was fun to look for it.

This grave site is not clearly marked as an exhibit, nor does it have a pullout. It's located just west of the Lost Horse Mine Road. The etchings in the white grave marker are fading over time, but apparently a cool place to stop for "grub"

Located on the west side of Keys View Road directly across from the dirt road spur to the trailhead for Lost Horse Mine Trail, the lonely tombstone marks the final resting spot for Johnny Lang, a shady local prospector, where his body was found three months after leaving his home with the note “Gone for grub. Be back soon.” tacked to his door. Johnny lost his horse one day to a local outlaw that claimed it for his own after it wandered away. Soon after, Johnny gained control of a claim that he registered as the Lost Horse Mine and the adjacent areas became known as Lost Horse Mountain and Lost Horse Valley. Although a founding partner of the very productive Lost Horse mine, he was later caught stealing from his partners and forced to sell his share. He then worked a small claim for the next 25 years but frequently sold suspiciously large amounts of gold that many suspected came from a secret stockpile that he had stolen from the Lost Horse Mine.

It is a small spot along the side of the road, across from the entrance of the Lost Horse Mine. It is where Johnny Lang died on his way to "get some grub". His body has long since been remove due to grave robbers. A nice piece of history of Joshua Tree N.P.
