Hiking around this lake was a great way to start a visit to Lassen Volcanic National Park. We'd catch views of the lake and the mountains around it, especially Lassen Peak. It was a pleasant hike and not at all taxing. So beautiful!

There is an easy hiking trail around this lake...but we did NOT hike that trail. We just went to the spot with the most amazing view of Lassen Peak across the lake with the reflection of the mountain in the lake. Wow. Here's how we found this location. Drive all the way to the North Entrance gate. There are places to park on either side just inside the park. We then hiked along the west end of Manzanita Lake for about 100 yards on a little trail. At this point, you will see the most amazing view. I am attaching a photo from that spot.

We walked around Manzanita Lake, which was an easy mile and a half. This is a really beautiful lake, and we got some great pictures of reflections in the lake that day, in spite of the haze in the air from nearby wildfires. There were signs outside the Visitor Center advising visitors that the best views of Lassen Peak reflected in the lake can be found from the north and northwest sides of the lake, and I found that to be true.
There were people fishing in the lake (catch and release only), but part of the lake is closed to boats, and swimming and wading are not allowed at all because a protective mama otter attacked a swimmer (I’m not kidding. Check the web site).
The lake was surprisingly quiet even on a Sunday afternoon, with plenty of parking. There are rangers outside the Visitor Center nearby to answer questions, with flush toilets in a separate building, and picnic tables along the lake. There’s a café near the Manzanita Cabins with a limited menu of hot dogs and sandwiches, and a very small general store. Face masks are required inside any buildings, but outside only about half the people we saw were wearing masks, or had them available to put on quickly.

There are kayak rentals there, but very unofficial. The first park ranger that we asked about it didn’t know what time they started or ended. But when we went out there, there was a dude out there with a few kayaks. Very unofficial. Rates are around $18 for one hour, and $28 for two hours.
If you are there for walking the loop, it is an easy hike around the lake. From the parking area, you have to walk to the other side to see Lassen Peak. The view from across the lake at dusk is a nice place to see the sunset, as you can see the reflection of the moon rise above Lassen peak, but there are many bats and mosquitoes on the trail at that time as well.

After driving from Redding up to Lassen Volcanic National Park, this is a nice place to rest and relax. The lake is pretty calm, so gives nice reflections of Mount Lassen if the angle is right. The visitor center was open with Covid restrictions and there is a campground and camp store close by.

This lake is literally at the base of MT lassen. You can swim, canoe, sup board, and fish. The reflection on a calm mourning with a cup of coffee in hand will be a memory you won't forget.

Hello, is it possible to bring a stroller for the manzanita Lake loop trail ? Thanks

Anyone have tips on horseback riding in the area? We looked into Drakesbad but seems it might be a little too far? Online directions are showing it is 2 hours away!? Is that correct? Any insight and tips are appreciated!!

A question about dogs on leash - I know they're not allowed on the trails, but how about walking around the campground ?
