This is a fairly easy hike with beautiful views of the Olympic Mountains throughout. At the summit, you can see all the way to Vancouver Island, but be ready for some serious wind. Be sure to arrive early; I parked at 7:15 and there were a good number of spots still available.

We enjoyed the Hurricane Hill Trail. Luckily, on the way up, the clouds were still high enough that we could see the mountains. We were not able to get that amazing distance view, but it was a beautiful hike. The top is “windy”. We were glad that we dressed accordingly and had hats for that hurricane force wind. By the time we were hiking down, the clouds really rolled in, so no more mountain tops, but lovely colors and conifers to view.

So many lovely spots to stop and explore on this whole trip. Plenty of beaches, hiking trails, scenive view points. Lots of wildlife.

This trail is a bit milder than some of the others. The trailhead is past the main parking lot at the end of the road. If full there are a couple of overflow parking lots just down the road. The trail goes on about 7 miles down to Elwha but I believe that they consider the nature trail is 1.5 mile out (3 miles RT). To that point (observation point) rates about 655 ft of elevation gain but the last 0.5 miles is rather step. You can easily turn around before that last bit.
There are some nice benches along the way to rest and enjoy the fabulous view for miles and miles. Are are out on the rim but not to a scary extent so you can see both side of the view or basically a 360 view. The trail is paved the entire way but given the incline I would not suggest for wheel chairs or anyone not in reasonable shape.

Beautiful area. Great trails. They are well marked. Some are easily accessible and others aren’t for the faint of heart.

First if all, GO EARLY. Limited parking fills up fast. The snowcapped Olympic range and colorful mountain meadows are amazing. Hiking trails easy to difficult. Words or pictures cannot adequately describe the beauty of this place.

Travelled far to get there only to find d out that the park had reached its daily limit of 375 cars. The daily limit is usually reached at 10 am forest ranger Jane-doe told us. We only wanted to drive up to the top to take a photo as there is nothingbup there to do. The center at the top burned down so there are no washrooms or food or drink available. It would have been nice if the park rangers could figure out how to advertise tgat there park closes down to the public around 10am each day. Extremely disappointed to have traveled all the way there to be rejected at the gate. Its unfortunate they cant figure out how to keep the park open to everyone while they rebuild washrooms. That is alotvof revenue that they are losingveach day. Revenue tgat could be used to fund the building of new washrooms. Too bad no one in charge can figure that out. We will not be returning and we will be sure to share this terrible experience with everyone we know.

This is well worth the hike but there's a bit to know before you go.
As of now, the Visitor's Centre is being rebuilt, so there is limited parking in the main lot where some of the hikes start from. Note: don't start the Hurricane Ridge Hill hike here if you can help it as the trail head begins 1.5 miles further up - just go through the set of gates and continue on til you hit the final parking lot.
Arrive early! We hiked on a Tuesday in July and parked at 7:15am. There were 4 cars in the parking lot at this time. When we got to the top, there were only 8 others there and it was so peaceful. On our way down, there were lots of people on their way up and the path was getting busier and busier.
We are both in our early 50s and weren't especially fit for this trip but we made it up in about 40 minutes and then spent lots of time enjoying the views of Vancouver Island, snow capped mountains etc. The path is paved and steep but there are lots of places to stop and rest if you need to. We did encounter some deer on the path and again at the top as well as some mosquitos on the top, but there were only a few of these.
When you arrive at the Visitor's Centre, continue through for about another 1.5 miles. You'll pass 2-3 other parking lots which are overflow from the final parking lot for the Hill hike. There are not many places to park here, so again, get here early. It was full when we returned at about 9:15am and the Visitor's Center lot was almost full too as we drove through. There were also 20 cars in line at the main gate by 9:30-45am.
A note for those fearful of heights: the drive up to Hurricane Ridge is stunningly beautiful. It is also a little nerve wracking if you fear heights - a winding road with sheer drops only a few feet or so from where the edge of the road ends. I wish I'd known that before we went - it wouldn't have stopped me but I'd have been prepared.
This is a moderately challenging hike given the steep and steady climb up but it's worth it! A highlight on our PNW road trip.

This is a spectacular Hike but also very popular. You should plan to be a the park as early as possible. Especially now since the visitor center burned down, the park is severely limiting the number of cars allowed per day. The trail is easy to follow for any physical level. The path is paved and mostly smooth. The hike is uphill but there are benches all along the way you can stop and rest and enjoy the glorious views while you catch your breath. The park has lots of wild life including chipmunks and Marmots. Another recommendation would be to park near or in the lot with the Port'a'Potty. There is not a Port A Potty in the lot nearest the trail head to the park. There is a path through the trees down to the lot with the potties but is .08 miles there and then .08 miles back each time you need to go. And with NO visitor center there are no other restrooms in this area of the park. This was one of my absolute favorite hikes in Olympic National Park. I highly recommend this to everyone's agenda! Stunning Views!

I have a porsche (car), do you think the roads are okay for a car to get to hurricane ridge?

I think you would be okay. The road is pretty well maintained. Parking lot at top can be kind of packed and hard to find a spot away from others to avoid door dings.

I’m thinking of going mid August. I would love recommendations on campground or car camping area close to trails. ♥️

The Heart of the Hills campground in the Olympic National Park is nice and it is convenient for exploring the north side of the park. You might consider splitting your time and finding a campground on the west side of the Olympic Peninsula as well to explore that area too, which includes wild beaches and rainforest. Enjoy!

We are thinking of visiting in early June. I was told that It is not a good time because it is snow covered. Is this true ? Snow doesn't bother us just as long as roads and trails aren't closed.

Generally June is ok. If you go to the NPS Website ahead of your trip, that offers WA DOTD Road Conditions and Closures in and around the National Park. The road up does close around 5 pm daily, so be advised of that. The NP Service Visitor Centers and the website are your best sources of information around road issues.

We were planning on doing the Hurricane Hill hike during our visit at the end of the month. However I just checked the schedule and it will be close when we will be there. What is a similar hike with great views and wildlife? We are all fit but do not want to do a super long hike.

I am not sure but I bet the park rangers can recommend some trails and be up to date on the trails too. Have fun. It is gorgeous.

We are planning to fly into portland in April and will be in the are for 2 days...planning to see HOh rain forest...but only have one and a half days for that...is it possible to stay in olympia and do the Hoh rainforest and come back by night to Olympia? Is this doable in a day. Google maps has the distance between HOH and olympia as 3 hrs.

Hi. What is the drive like? I’m afraid of heights and can have trouble with shear drop offs. Are there guardrails? And are there pull offs along the way where I could turn around if needed? Thank you!

I'm 72 and love to drive, loved the drive up the mountain - road is back in good shape - lots of turn offs. My mom is 91 and is more cautious, and she wanted to drive down. She did awesome!! Speed limit is like 25 and not crowed this time of year. Do It!!
Will my discover pass work for Hurricane ridge?

Your WA State Discover pass will not work. You need a National Park pass.
