My husband and I ventured up to Chasm Lake by accident. We missed the turn off for Long’s Peak on the Key Hole Route.
I would rate this hike as moderately difficult in terms of elevation gain and terrain. We started at around 3:30 a.m on a Saturday in July. The parking lot was already full and we had to park along the road (about 1/4 mile away).
There is a beautiful creek I could only hear on the way up since it was still dark out. The views along the way are breath taking. We stopped to have a snack and saw a marmot. Be leary of them, I’ve been told they like to take snacks.
Overall well worth the hike. It took about 3 hours to get up to the lake and about an hour and 45 minutes to get down from the lake.

This is hike has a beautiful pay off but it takes some work to get there. It's rating on All Trails is due to the elvation gain of 2500 feet over 3.7 miles one way. Plus there are many, many rocks and step ups, which is a good leg work out. At the base you look up at Longs Peak. Serious caution- Do Not Attempt this hike with out proper clothing, water and hiking shoes. The temps at the top drop quickly and the weather changes just as quickly. This is one approach to Longs Peak if you don't konw about Longs read up.

This is one of the best hikes in RMNP! The hike starts at the Long's Peak trailhead. Unless you arrive well before sunrise you will probably not get a parking space in the lot during the summer. Simply park along the road and walk uphill to the ranger station. The trail climbs steadily uphill and in the forest for the first 2.0 to 2.5 miles or so. Once you're out of the trees the trail opens up and enters the alpine zone. You still have another uphill mile or more until you reach Chasm Junction. The Boulder Field and Long's Peak trail heads right and Chasm Lake heads left. There is a privy there if needed. From here the trail is mostly flat as you follow a ridge that overlooks Peacock Pool and Columbine Falls. You cannot see Chasm Lake until you complete a relatively easy rock scramble to reach it. It’s a great and moderately challenging 9-mile hike with an elevation gain of about 2,600 feet. Have some clothing layers, water and calories in your backpack and enjoy the day.

We went on Sept 4th and it took us 6.5 hrs up and back. Took a while to get used to the altitude and we brought lots of water in our camelbacks. We were prepared for weather changing , however it was bright and sunny most of the day. The terrain change is exciting (including some waterfalls)... some large boulders at the end before you reach Chasm Lake. The quiet is extraordinary as well as the wind in the mountains. We loved this hike!

It's not a hard hike, but it is pretty long and at elevation. The number of people who were ill equipped for this hike, we saw during the day amazed me. There were a few groups who only had the clothes on their backs, not extra gear in case of rain/thunderstorms/or an accident. Also no water. It was bad enough seeing people with a single bottle of water, but the people without any water completely dumbfounded me. This is an 8.4 mile hike, most of it highly exposed to the sun. Bring water, bring sunscreen, bring bug spray, bring raingear, check the weather. Not doing these things could mean massive problems part way through the hike.

Same feeling with others: tough but rewarding. Weather changes quickly, be prepared. High altitude, it’s better to keep warm. At last, bring enough water as always.

We did this hike in late August. The snowpack near the lake had just melted at that point. We got to the Longs Peak parking lot before 7 am and still had to park in overflow parking. I definitely recommend getting there early (a lot of Longs Peak hikers start as early as 2 or 3 am). About half the hike is above the tree line. I really enjoyed the trip below the tree line with beautiful waterfalls along the trail. Above the tree line we saw a moose grazing at a distance. A couple other hikers mentioned he had been right off the trail before we got there. There are two bathrooms along the way which is really nice. There's only one fork in the trail. You'll go to the left. So it's easy to get to. You'll see a lake to your left before you get to Chasm Lake (which will be on your right). To actually get to the lake will require you to climb up some boulders. While a little nerve wracking, it is complete doable. If in doubt, just wait a few minutes and someone will come along and be able to show you what path to take. Once over the boulders, there are more boulders to climb to get to the lake. You can stay up top or go all the way to the lake. You'll have a great view of Longs and it's a nice place to sit and enjoy some lunch. Definitely be prepared with plenty of water and food. I took about 5 liters of water but I normally drink more than most. I think I ate 3 bars and some jerky during the whole trip. It started looking rainy on the way down and we got done just in time. Afternoon showers are common in the Rockies so be prepared if not starting early. I took hiking poles and wore hiking boots but my friend wore tennis shoes and did not have poles. The poles are a personal preference. I don't think they're necessary but I liked having them.

We went to this trail on a weekend in the end of September. It was literally the second most beautiful trail that I had ever hiked (1st one was Mt Rainier in June). The fall color was pretty even on the tundra area. Waterfalls everywhere on the trail and near the end of the trail. There was ice near the waterfalls although it still felt warm with lots of sunshine. We could see the Twin Sisters Peak and Longs Peak almost all the way to the lake. The view was awesome. At the end of the trail after scrambling with all four, we finally met the Chasm Lake that nestles below Longs Peak. The water was so green and clear. It was just so beautiful.

Hi All, Thinking of visiting RMNP in 3rd week of May 2019. How much of snow would be there on the Chasm lake trail? Any special recommendations for this hike in May?

Do you think seniors (mid seventies) in semi good shape can do this?
