I was not impressed with the views here. They are not as sweeping as the other overlooks in the park. The parking lot is also a madhouse. If you can’t make it here it is not a big deal and you’re not missing out on any kind of particularly unique scenery (eg it’s not like there’s a glacier or waterfall or anything the other viewpoints don’t have). The park rangers of course were all great.

Some stamina and prior adjustment to the high altitude is required for the walk up Alpine Ridge Trail, but those who can are rewarded with beautiful views, a sense of accomplishment, and a photo op at the 12,005 ft sign. While relaxing at the visitor center viewing area, we saw a half dozen elk walking through the snow on a far slope. We enjoyed this high point in the park.

The Alpine Visitor center is a must do when visiting the Rocky Mountain National Park. The track up there can be intimidating but don’t let that stop you. The views and sense of accomplishment make it worth every step.

We were traveling around the west side of RMNP and wanted to visit this visitor center to find all the hot spots for the park and the folks there were very friendly in helping us with facts and tips on getting through and around the park.

This is a great stop while driving from Estes Park to the continental divide. The extra hike was neat, but not too hard. The shop had a great variety of items and had decent prices.

This visitor center at 11796 feet is rustic looking, fitting in with the national park atmosphere. It has a large gift shop, ranger information area and food/cafeteria area. It looked very interesting and I did manage to get some sandwiches here. It is one of the only restaurant areas in the park. When we got to the visitor center here, the ranger tested our oxygen levels and we were in the 80s so he said that we had to descent immediately. We were a little dizzy, but didn't realize that we had altitude sickness. Be very careful especially if are visiting after coming from a low altitude area. Usually you should visit this park after being in Denver area over 48 hours for your body to adjust. Altitude sickness is serious. The rangers here will check your oxygen levels. We had to get some canned oxygen especially for Pikes Peak.

We were at the Alpine Visitor Center for two days.
On the first day at around 12 noon, the huge parking lot was definitely bursting at the seams! But the view was really impressive! At almost 12,000 feet it is of course relatively cool, even in summer! No trees grow up here, there is a bit of snow in some places and through the binoculars we were able to see a herd of deer in the distance very well. Or are they moose? A fascinating place in any case, of course with a souvenir shop, restrooms and café.
On the second day we were there at around 3 p.m. and most of the culinary things were already sold out, which was very disappointing. Above all, there were no more vegetarian options (cheese macaroni, sweet potato fries, pierogi)! The cinnamon rolls were also gone. We only got coffee and visited the huge (but expensive) souvenir shop!

The rangers were anxious to explain the difference between horns and antlers and more about bighorn sheep. Restrooms and a place to refill water bottles was welcome. We liked the animal exhibits that described pika vs gopher and ground squirrel. Food selections in the building next door were slim pickings by 3pm (esp for vegetarians) but we got something and sat by the window where we watching an elk "ski" down the steep slope to to join the rest of the herd. If you want CO local crafts, be careful in the gift shop. The item we looked at was from Mexico. A good break from the cold wind outside. Clouds blew into the parking lot while we were there, but lifted by the time we went to leave.

We learned a lot from the rangers who answered our many questions from yellow-bellied marmots to the Old Fall River Road. Good restrooms and water refilling stations. Wonderful views of Old Fall River Road area.

I don’t like cheesy tourist shops - but - if you get past the gift shop, this place is amazing. Talk to the rangers - the building and history is so interesting.

I know the Visitor Center closes at 4:30pm, but are restrooms and the trail available after that time?

I was at the alpine visitor center yesterday and saw some security wristlets. I am wondering what brand they are.

The hike up the Alpine trail can be as short as 15 minutes, if you are in good physical shape. You will get out of breath due to the height (12,000 feet). Most of the trail are rock steps and your footing will be ok.
