Judging from the relatively small number of reviews, the Buck Rock Fire Lookout seems to be not well-known, but it rivals more famous Moro Rock as an essential viewpoint to visit in the Kings Canyon / Sequoia National Park area. It's located slightly outside of the national park boundaries, in Sequoia National Forest. While Buck Rock is only a few miles off the main Generals Highway route through the national parks, it does require a short (a little over 2 mile) approach along a dirt road. It's not a difficult road at all, but it will be helpful to drive it in an SUV or other higher-clearance vehicle - it was an easy drive in my Subaru Forester. There's a small area for parking not far from the base of the rock, with a short walk there. Looking up at the fire lookout on top, it seems nearly impossible that there could be a way up. Once you reach the base of the rock, you'll find a very short trail that leads up to a series of stairways which go to the lookout on top. It's exposed for sure, but all of the stairs had very good railings on both sides. The route looked much scarier from a distance than it did actually climbing up or back down - still, I wouldn't recommend it for those with a fear of heights. Once at the top, the vistas in all directions are vast and spectacular. Since this is a working fire lookout, there was a ranger at the top who lives there during fire season, and she was most helpful in identifying the many peaks within view, ranging from Mt. Goddard to Mt. Clarence King to Mt. Brewer and the Great Western Divide, and beyond. The visit to Buck Rock was one of the most memorable ones I had in the Kings Canyon / Sequoia National Park area - very highly recommended!

We took a day trip from Three Rivers to Buck Rock Lookout. It took about 6 hours for the round trip. We had a picnic lunch at the parking lot. Beautiful weather and views.

Buck Rock hosts one of the few remaining Fire Lookout Towers in which the ranger lives in the Tower. The view is great, as you'd expect and the ranger on duty was very friendly and informative.
Be prepared: although the parking area is close by, the hike up to the Station can be strenuous to persons who aren't accustomed to taking a lot of stairs particularly at this elevation (8,502 feet). Bring extra water!

A bit off the beaten path, but it was such a fun short hike to a stair climb up to the fire lookout. Amazing views from the top and THE nicest vault toilet I've ever used is there (it's the bathroom for the ranger living in the lookout!).

Sought this place out on a completely random suggestion, and it turned out to be one of the highlights of our entire trip.
The access road as others have mentioned is not for cars with low clearance nor for faint hearted drivers!
But once you get to the carpark and walk a short way, you're rewarded with both a spectacular setting and a historic, surreal build that looks like it dropped out of a story book, a little glass and timber box perched atop a massive granite outcrop.
We loved the steep, switch backed staircase and the outlook itself, which is securely anchored to the rock despite its apparent fragility.
Luckily for us, we were the only visitors at the time and the ranger on duty was a welcoming and friendly host, explaining her job and happily answering all our questions.
Could have stayed for much longer, there was so much to photograph and enjoy but we had a long drive ahead so we tore ourselves away with a souvenir from the range available (funds go to support the volunteers who look after the outlook) and about a million pictures.
The walk in and out from the carpark is very pleasant; toilets are available at the base of the stairs and there are picnic tables too.
All in all a wonderful experience and one that we totally recommend!
P.s. we saw a very low slung fancy Euro convertible in the car park so it's not 4wd access only but we heard the driver bottom out at least once as he left...

The road up to Buck Rock for the last couple of miles gets pretty rough - I would reccomend having a car with some clearance. After you get to Buck Rock, the views in all directions are amazing. I ended making the trek to catch the sunset, but by the time I made it, the actual Lookout itself was closed but there is satelite station that is very close by the entrance that had great views which was easily accesible.

And this was during the fires when the view was limited from the smoke! I'm hoping to go back when our skies clear. The road isn't for low cars, my subaru scraped once coming in from the south and I know how to drive ruts and dirt roads. The hike from the parking is less than 1/4 mile I think, but a little bit of a challenge if you are out of shape like I am. Then if you've had enough, you can watch the rest of your party climb the stairs up, up, and up to the top. If you take it slow it isn't much harder than the walk you just took. It isn't as scary as you think when you start. Just keep going and it is worth it at the top. The stairs are very sturdy and I'm a little scared of heights and did fine. Coming down I needed someone to walk in front of me to feel safer though.

The climb up the many stars to the Buck Rock Lookout is well worth it. The view from the top is amazing. I was fortunate to visit on a clear day when the coastal mountains were even visible off to the west.

If you can stand the climb to the top you will be rewarded with amazing 360 views. But it's a little scary for those afraid of heights. This one had me white knuckled but Moro Rock did not. The watch tower seems to be balancing on the boulders and held by cables. Take your time and climb the stairs and stop at the landing points to take in the views. The rangers or volunteers will let you go inside to see their 'room' where they take shifts for 24/7 someone watching for fires. Interesting to see their kitchen, bed, etc.
Be aware that the road to the tower is narrow, dusty with lots of ruts/potholes. If you can stand the bouncing for the 2.5 miles and a short hike to the tower stairs you will be glad you did. Take Big Meadows Road off Generals Hwy.

What a great VIEW! You can get a 360 view on the whole park. A little bumpy road, but worth it! Climbed 100+ stairs to the top. You can hike here if you don't want to take the dirt road, about 3 miles. We had AWD so we drove up. There is a bathroom and the watch tower sells t-shirts!
