This hike will get you to work up a sweat, but the views from the top are definitely worth it.
There are two different ways to get to summit: either the North or South Trails. The North Trail is ~3.7 miles roundtrip with ~1200 feet of elevation gain. The South Trail is ~2.9 miles roundtrip with ~830 feet of elevation gain. I would recommend taking the South Trail as it is more scenic and less strenuous compared to the North Trail.

We enjoyed the ride up to Mary's Rock. The trail is a climb at the beginning but then levels off. We enjoyed the wildlife too. We saw 3 snakes, not poisonous.

Entering at Thornton Gap, we were eager to take our first post COVID hike; seeing two options for the Mary’s Rock Summit Trail, one 3.7 miles (6.0k) with 1,250-foot (381m) elevation gain and the other, designated as the “alternate”, 2.9 miles (4.7k) round trip with a 830-foot (253m) elevation gain, we decided to be conservative and chose the latter for our first leg stretcher in over a year and a half. The only problem was that the alternate summit trail does not take you to the summit or even any view at all! It ends at an AT camping shelter in a clearing in the woods. While the hike is not terrible as it peacefully passes through the woods were we saw deer, wildflowers and a few springs, with so many other excellent hikes in Shenandoah to waterfalls or great views, we were disappointed in spending our time on this trail with a misleading name.

My daughter and I loved Shenandoah and it has some great hikes with great views. This was my favorite at 3.1 miles with nearly 800 vertical feet and maybe the best view in the park. I also loved the rocks scrambling to the top for some pictures.
The views of the Thornton Gap entrance and west into the Shenandoah Valley and Luray are simply incredible. You feel like you are suspended in air 1,000 feet above a blanket of trees that rolls to the horizon. Outside of Old Rag, it is probably one of the harder hikes in the park but it is so worth it. The elevation is all in the beginning are you will steeply climb past an old homestead to connect with the Appalachian Trail. Once on the AT, you are hiking the ridge. There is a little up hill but mostly level. Then at the end you climb up to the rock and are greet to an incredible view.
Once at the top, there are so many rocks to scramble for better resting and viewing spots. We made this hike in the late morning and while the climb got hot, it was very cool and nice at the top. It is a great hike.

I started at the Panorama parking lot; it was much harder going up than coming down. Next time I’ll bring my hiking poles. Took me ~ 3.5 hours well worth the effort though.

Decided to take the Meadow Springs Trail up to the summit because I wanted to take a “look see” at the remains of the 1930 Potomac Mountain Club cabin built by Perry Sisk and used by those who created the trails in the area. The first half mile or so is steep but after that it fairly levels out. Perhaps a mile up the trail, it intersects with the AT which takes you to St Mary’s Rocks Summit. It’s a pleasant walk along the AT with views of the Shenandoah Valley. A mostly cloudy day with the sun occasionally peaking out. On reaching the top, there’s adequate space for a little scrambling - not as much as Humpback Rocks but close.

This is one of my favorite hikes in the park. Last time we started from a trailhead on route 211 so it was a longer trek to reach the top. This time started from the Panorama parking lot (just south of Thornton Gap entrance) so it was just a 4 mile out and back, a much easier and extremely rewarding short hike (however one benefit for hiking the longer way is free parking at the trailhead). It's a steady uphill all the way but the slope is pretty mild overall so not that hard if you go slowly. The view at the top is stunning, and best of all, there is an extensive amount of rock outcropping so if you like rock scrambling, it's possible to get away from the main area where most people congregate and find a more solitude perch to enjoy the view. Note the summit is super windy and can be chilly now it's no longer summer - so if you plan on staying for a bit be sure to bring something warm to wear.

The trail is lovely and the views at the top are gorgeous. A good 2-3 hour hike of moderate difficulty. But, it was pretty stressful because there are a large number of people on the trail and many if not most are not wearing masks, nor are they keeping a safe distance. The trail is narrow and so you are crossing paths constantly with people breathing hard and heavy without masks on a foot or two away. And the area at the top is really small - so there were just a lot of people trying to share a relatively small space. If you are concerned about coronavirus and following public health guidance, this trail (and most trails in along the Blue Ridge) will really stress you out as it did us.

A hike of moderate difficulty with a beautiful, panoramic view at the end. A lovely, cool breeze was coming up from the valley when I was there. Those wanting more adventure can climb the rocks to the very peak.
Take lots of water (one bottle mayn't be enough) and a snack for the top. Can be completed in a couple hours if you're in reasonable shape. The trail is very rocky so have some good shock absorbing hiking shoes.

Can I fly my drone on the top of the mountain?

There is no drone flying in any of the National Parks. Google it.

Where are the best places to park? I've read that for a longer hike, you can park at Jewell overlook or Buck Hollow parking. For the overlook, can the car be left for a long period of time?

There is plenty of parking at jewel and we had no worries leaving our vehicle there for a few hours as we hiked the long route to Mary’s rock! We took the AT to Mary’s rock trail which was a little over 3 miles to the rock. There were steep places but a good mix of easier terrain to rest the knees but still gain ground. The AT route was much more scenic than taking the shorter hike to Mary’s

Is it necessary to make the scramble up the rocks to the top at the end in order to have a good view? If you do scramble to the top, do you come down at the same place you go up?

Winnweiler, Tyskland709 bidrag
Not at all. There are some nice rock outcroppings that you can climb for about 3-4 meters of more altitude if you do want to have a little fun, but you’ll just come back down at the same location unless you intend to go off trail.

Aren't there several places you can pick up the trail to get to Marys Rock summit? where are these trailheads located and where's the best place to park for these mentioned trailheads?
