PROS
* Iconic world famous very long trail
* Great for hiking- straightforward
* Usually straight and it is marked with signage, the AT marker and adequate white trail blazer
* Interacting with other trails (at least in Shenandoah National Park and Harpers Ferry West Virginia

CONS
* It is narrow- one person at a time
* The directional signage is terrible (see photos)

"I VISITED THIS PLACE"...
... because I passed and joined the trail during my hikes in Shenandoah National Park and in harpers Ferry. Of course I was happy and thrilled to walk on the iconic pathway, but disappointed by its narrowness and the poor directional signage.

We aren't "through" hikers, but just doing very short segments, primarily in the SNP to enjoy and experience what those determined hikers do. It is peaceful and sometimes you'll come across one of these hikers (you generally can smell them coming) that will talk for a minute about their adventures. Wishing them all safe travels.

Most visitors hiking Appalachian Trail in Shenandoah do it "in installments" simply for practical reasons.Shorter distances during various trips. Like us depending on the season during your day-trips you will meet serious hikers here with all the gear. This time of the year it is unusual to meet the long distance hikers.
It is good to walk this trail even just to get a taste of it.
Appalachian trail in Shenandoah is quite easy technically speaking and beautiful.
Hopefully some day will not have to limit ourselves to just several miles on Appalachian Trail at a time.

We hiked a little on the Appalachian Trail when visiting the Shenandoah Park. It interwinds with other trails & is very pretty.

We did not come to Shenandoah National Park to hike the Appalachian Trail, or the AT for short, but since the trail travels the 105-mile (169k) length of the park, we were bound to hike portions of the trail which was often incorporated into the local park trails. One can always tell when they are on the well maintained and marked Appalachian Trail by the white blazes or the stylized white AT on trail markers versus the blue blazes of the park’s trails or the yellow blazes of the horse trails. If you are backpacking or planning an overnighter, one can find shelters and outhouses at several points along the AT within the park.

Wherever you are in Shenandoah National Park, you are not far from the Appalachian Trial that runs the entire length of the park. You are bound to cross it multiple times and even hike it when you visit the best views in the park. The Appalachian Trail (AT) is to feet what the Skyline drive is to vehicles in the park. It is marked by a white blaze so everyone knows when they are on it. Again going up to Bearfence, Hawksbill, Stoney Man and Mary's Rock, my daughter and I actually hiked a portion of the trail. It was interesting for us as a friend of my son's had just walked the Shenandoah section days before us on his way to reaching the half way point between Georgia and Maine. The other thing about the AT in Shenandoah is that it is typically an easier trail, simply following the ridgeline. For this reason my daughter always loved seeing the white blaze.

We walked only a tiny section of the AT, but even stepping foot on this iconic trail was a thrill. Left me dreaming of future hiking adventures still to come! Must do, whatever you are able.

The AT through Shenandoah National Park is extremely well maintained. There were very few blowdowns and the trail was mostly even, ie - not lots of loose rocks or roots tripping you up. Nothing was super steep / requiring hands to climb. The trail passes a number of great viewpoints - some accessible from Skyline Drive so you'll see a lot of day hikers, but many were just good viewpoints along the trail (see the Guthook App to find them all) - some with stealth camping spots nearby - see my campsite / sunset photo.
We did an early fall (late Sep - early Oct) hike and there were almost no bugs and lots of water available [to be filtered], except for a single 13 mile dry section in the Southern end of the park. There were plenty of opportunities to pick up snacks / burgers /etc at Waysides, although there was not a lot of dehydrated / backpacker style food.
The only thing missing on the AT section of SNP was waterfalls - and there's plenty of those available if you choose to do a side trail. We did a few side trails via loops to see those.
Overall, a great / relatively easy backpacking trip. I would do it again in a heartbeat!

We were on our way to Hawksbill and took the wrong route. We went on Salamander Trail and I need to applaud myself. It took us 2 hours to get to the top and it was amazing and I did it. Came back down Hawksbill lower trail. Remember there are 2 different parking lots. It is not easy but definitely worth it.

We have been on the Skyline Drive in Shenandoah Natl Park several times and we enjoy the drive, the views, and the photo opportunities. This trip was the first time we actually decided to hike. We were able to find an easy trail via the NPS app (highly recommend), since we had not packed good hiking shoes. We hiked the Piney River Trail (accessed near the Thornton Gap entrance to Skyline) which led to the Range View Cabin. We backtracked, as instructed, and then also took a portion of the Sugarloaf Loop on the Appalachian. Sugarloaf Loop had much more of an elevation gain (the NPS app says 956 foot gain over the course of the loop), so we did about a half mile and backtracked to Piney River and back to our car. Next time, we'll definitely return to this loop, with the appropriate shoes/attire!
