To get to Rapidan Camp in the winter, you have to hike there. But this was probably our favorite hike on our guys trip! And we got to hang out at Rapidan Camp for an hour by ourselves. The back porch of the Brown House is a great place to relax and listen to the water from the creeks below!

Keep in mind that because of COVID the ranger tours were suspended and none of the Rapidan buildings were open to the public. As with all tours or presentations, my rating is also affected by the rangers that were present during my visit. I hiked down to Rapidan via the Milam Gap trail, which was a wonderful hike (reviewed elsewhere). Rapidan Camp has many interpretive signs which were informative and easy to read. The camp is not spread out so it is easy to make sure you see all of it. And it appears, from the outside, to be in good repair, what is left of it. Just so you are aware, only about four (five?) buildings still exist and one is for staff so it isn't open. The day that I visited the rangers, two of them, were more interested in their personal conversation than me standing by waiting to ask a question. That put me off, and then when one of them walked away when I started talking it was another negative. That is not my usual experience with park service rangers, so you may have better luck (and certainly the guided tour would help).

We walked down from Skyline Drive and found the trip completely enjoyable. Walking was easy, through beautiful woods.

The Rapidan site itself is well-kept with informative signs. Buildings were closed due to COVID but the excellent signage made us feel we had gotten the gist of the place.

The buildings are built around the two streams which come together to form the Rapidan River. You'll cross the streams several times and see interesting bridges throughout the camp area.

This 4.0-mile (6.4k) round trip hike with an 870-foot (265m) elevation gain was our favorite hike during our most recent visit. The trailhead begins across the road from the Milan Gap parking area at mile 52.4 of Skyline Drive. The trail immediately heads downhill steadily but gently and soon crosses a stream with the aid of well-placed stones. The trail follows the stream the rest of the way to Camp Rapidan while crossing the stream two more times, once again with the aid of stones and finally with a narrow footbridge made from a flattened felled tree near the picturesque Big Rock Falls.

The destination is Camp Rapidan, established by President Hoover, an avid fly fisherman, before the days of Camp David, as a presidential retreat to escape from the summer heat and humidity of Washington while getting some rest and relaxation while still carrying on the duties of the President. Several of the camp’s buildings have been restored and are nicely maintained by the park service with two containing exhibits but were closed due to COVID precautions during our visit. Nevertheless, we enjoyed looking around the camp and reading the interpretive signs. When done, one retraces their steps back, uphill, to the trailhead.

This is a great hike and an interesting historical visit wrapped up together within Shenandoah NP.

Nice and relatively easy 4 mile return hike. Some gentle inclines and declines with 3 stream crossings but all have strategically placed stones so no wet feet.

There are three wooden cabins remaining from Hoover's time. One is the Prime Ministers cabin which has a great exhibit with lots of information about the President and his development and use of the Camp. The second is the Brown House, which was the Presidents and furnished as it would have been. The third is occupied by NPS staff so can only be viewed from the outside.

I believe there are organised tours up until Labor Day. However, when we visited today we were fortunate to find a ranger there from 10am until 2pm who could open up and show us around. I think this is the case most days until end Oct but best to check with one of the visitor centres.

We found it fascinating and really enjoyed both our visit and the hike.

We did the hike to Camp Rapidan via the Mill Prong Trail- 3.7 miles out and back, 870 feet of elevation. The trail is downhill to the camp and uphill coming back, but the uphill is gradual and not too difficult. There are three stream crossings, with the first two very easy and the third more difficult. The first two streams have flat, nicely placed rocks that can be used as a bridge across. I think the third stream had that as well, but there was so much rushing water (it was early May), the rocks were mostly submerged. I saw a few nimble people make it across, but DH and I scooted across a large log on our butts in a very undignified manner. No matter, we made it!

At the end of the trail, the camp is on the right, and bathrooms are on the left. The camp is interesting to see, but there’s no way to see inside the three buildings without a tour guide. My favorite thing about this trail was actually the plethora of wildflowers that were blooming along the side of the trail (again, early May). I noticed we got different wildflowers as we dropped in elevation, towards the camp. Overall a fun little hike.

We had a private tour today because none of the other sold out tickets showed up! David is very knowledgeable and a joy to listen too. Kudos NPS for doing a good job.

Loved this hike and the grounds. Lots of water crossings on the hike (recent heavy rains made this worse) so I highly recommend waterproof hiking shoes. Our 6 year old did the round trip hike no problem and loved exploring the grounds.

Rapidan Camp was President Herbert Hoover's summer fishing camp. Though there are some structures (thee cabins) remaining, most of the Camp is gone. It's a medium-difficulty four mile round trip hike from Skyline Drive. The hike is fun - three stream crossings (the third was a bit tricky) - we did it in the rain, and it was still fun. The Camp was deserted (we were there in the rain, after all), but it's very cool to see the history there. Definitely recommended!

3 of us went this past Saturday, aiming to see the architecture and history of the house. Along with that, we got a GREAT tour from a guide (Ginnie - one of the Park Service guides) who completely engulfed us in the life and times of Herbert and Lou Henry (wife) Hoover.

On the 10 minute van ride down to the camp from the Harry Byrd Visitor Center, she gave us background on Hoovers, and reason why they built Camp Rapidan and how they used it. At the Camp, she showed us the remaining three buildings, and took us through the Presidential cabin. She answered everyone's (group of 9 in the van) questions very thoroughly.

Then on way back up to Visitor Center, she explained what Hoovers did after his presidency, which was a pretty impressive list. We all came away thinking that he accomplished much more than his shortcomings at the beginning of the Depression.
