The hike isn’t really strenuous by NP standards except that it’s fairly steep with loose gravel in quite a few places. We couldn’t believe how easy it was to walk even 1/2 mile or so across the glacier with just using our own crampons (even cheap ones with chain and no spikes) and hiking poles. It was an amazing experience and Mt Blackburn is beautiful in the distance. We hiked to 3 glaciers in Alaska and this one was by far the most accessible and safely trekked.

Spectacular hike! We brought our own crampons and walked out onto the glacier exploring. The glacier appeared to be fairly stable and safe to be on. We were on the glacier for around 2 hours, it was a spectacular experience! My 3rd time out on a glacier!

We enjoyed this hike. I would rate it as an easier day hike. I wouldn't step on the glacier if you don't have crampons...too risky in my opinion. If you have crampons and poles - you will be fine without a guide. The first part of the hike is somewhat boring, but it gets much better the second half with views. The campsites along the glacier looked optimal. Make sure you stop and have lunch and listen...you can hear the ice cracking under the silt/boulder section of the glacier...and occasionally a rockfall will happen. This was fun. Would totally do the hike again if ever in the area. The hard part is getting to McCarthy/Kennicott. Once there...the beauty is all around!

After you visit the historic mine, keep walking for about 2 miles and you will reach a 1/2 mile descent down to Root Glacier. From there you can venture out onto the glacier. The 2 mile part of the hike is pretty much woods on a mountain, there is a restroom part of the way through. You can camp out here as well. You pass across a beautiful waterfall which is a nice place to take a moment to cool off, as it gets warm hiking this trail. Once you reach the 1/2 mile descent part of the hike it's hiking on rocks/gravel so watch your step as they can slide a little but as long as you watch your step, it is an easily navigated trail. The views from the glacier are amazing. Take some time here to enjoy yourself before heading back up 1/2 mile to your 2 mile hike back to the mine.
We had the Kennicott shuttle take us to the parks footbridge. They drop you off at the park for about 5 hours and then you have to meet them back at the footbridge around 4:30pm to get picked up. This 5 hours gave us just enough time to explore the mine, visit a couple shops, hike the root glacier trail, have a snack, visit McCarthy and have an ice cream there and then hike back to the footbridge.

It takes some time to drive to the park’s McCarthy/Kennecot’s area, but it’s totally worth it. The Root Glacier day hike is very accessible, doable with kids, but fun as well. Trail goes through the old town, forest, rocks and ends up on the glacier.

One of the coolest things I’ve ever done. You’ll literally be amazed at the things you see out there. Definitely a once in a lifetime experience

We were in McCarthy/Kennecott during a heat wave (90 degrees in Alaska!), but that meant that we could hike up on the glacier without spikes. It was amazing! The trail to the actual glacier is beautiful and not too difficult. Once we got on the glacier it felt like someone turned on the A/C, so I would recommend a jacket, especially if it's not 90 degrees. This hike is a must if you make it to Kennecot!

Have wanted to walk on a glacier for several years. Most people at Kennicott were taking a tour along the Root Glacier Trail to Root Glacier which took from four to six hours. Time did not allow that many hours for me to do this activity, so did it on my own. The trail was winding, narrow, and steep in places. There was a steep area to get on the glacier, but not a difficult climb. This was a great hike and was back in Kennicott in about three hours.

This park is very remote and not easy to get to, but once you are there words cannot bestow the magnitude of beauty that is spread before you. The root glacier is so very big and mysterious. The guide tour we took with Wrangle Adventures with our guide Merritt made this part of our trip oh so very good. Merritt is a very good guide who knows his stuff about this big old slab of ice.

My daughter and I will be visiting the Kennecott Mine and spending the night there. I am 66 and my knees aren't the best. I would love to do the glacier hike. but am concerned about the distance, keeping up or worse, holding others up. Is there plenty to see if we just hike around on our own? Can we get to the glacier and on it on our own? I don't want to invest in the hike when I am not sure it is the best idea.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be welcome.
