Disappointed as after paying entrance fee and asking for a map of the site. I was directed to a small brochure for £1.95 or a larger one for about £5! When I queried this I was told I could take a photo of the map on the wall with my smartphone. I do have a smartphone, but many people don’t and I said this is a disadvantage to them. The young woman said they used to have free maps but had run out. I reluctantly paid for a small brochure but found the directions confusing so asked for a refund. We then made our own way around the site reading the information boards. However, it could be so much better, if they charged a pound or two extra and included an audio guide using head phones.

Lovely on a sunny day, there is the abbey to pay to walk around and then there is the water mill with a couple of shops and cafe’s and ice cream shop. There is some lovely walks along the river wye. The only issue is car parking as it is limited when it is very busy with visitor.

Wonderful Abbey with a lot of the foundations remaining so you can see the extent of the whole Abbey complex. Very good descriptions at many points as you go round. At the moment part is closed as there are extensive repairs being done to de-laminating masonry - but you can still view from a distance. Good shop with a wide choice of local drinks

Yet another historic building marred by contractor’s site fencing and safety signage. At least here most of the site is still accessible but the fencing really spoils the view and I had to be quite creative to get some decent pictures.

Not a great deal of written information about the history, just a small shelter affair with a few information boards in and the usual “this was the cloister” type boards dotted around in different rooms. Thought such an important site would warrant a proper museum with artefacts to display.

Interesting plaque on the wall outside saying this was where brass was made for the first time. Could have done with knowing more about that.

Tintern Abbey is simply breathtaking. The moment I set foot in its ruins, I was transported back in time. Founded in 1131, the abbey has witnessed centuries of tumultuous history, from its establishment as a Cistercian monastery to its eventual dissolution during the reign of Henry VIII. The ancient walls and crumbling arches tell a story of devotion and resilience, filled with mystery and intrigue.

Despite its age, the abbey's beauty is undeniable, especially against the backdrop of the River Wye. Walking through its grounds, I felt a sense of peace and tranquility wash over me. Tintern Abbey is a must-visit for anyone interested in history and a nature's beauty.

We have seen the Abbey on numerous TV programmes but nothing can prepare you for the scale and atmosphere of the place

Although there is a lot of restoration work going on at the moment we were still able to get around and get a sense of the place and how it worked in times gone by

There is a sufficient number of information boards to explain what you are looking at and more information available in the gift shop

The staff were helpful friendly and well informed There are good facilities here all which are of a high standard

Top tip: on the other side of the road on the hill is the derelict
church of St Mary's There is no connection to the Abbey but it's a nice walk up and it has some interesting graves ( A pyramid one ) and some good views over the bally and river

Parking is easy and you are reimbursed the cost if you visit the Abbey or the pub. It's dog friendly and accessible

If you enjoy history then this is a must visit if you are in the area

More than half of the abbey complex (potentially the more interesting half) is inaccessible due to repairs going on. Obviously the repairs are necessary, but they could drop the price by half (I believe we were charged a whole pound less than the standard entry fee). It looks like a wonderful visit if you can get to see all of it or if you are charged a fair price for what is accessible, but sadly I just came away feeling ripped off. However the little independent café the other side of the car park is lovely.

We found this sort of by accident on a trip to Wales. I saw the sign and of course we had to go, I had no idea we were so close to such an iconic spot. Being an English minor I of course knew the William Wordsworth poem, but even if you are not familiar with it, this is a marvelous place to visit.
The remains of the abbey are remarkably preserved considering it was dissolved so long ago. It is wonderful to imagine what it was like in its heyday. There is a entrance fee and a nice gift shop,
The ruins are easily explored and make for some great photo opportunities. Walking around the grounds of such an iconic location sent shivers up my spine.
When you are in Wales, this is a must stop!

We were lucky enough to have a beautiful November day to visit the spectacular remains of Tintern Abbey. Lovely staff in the shop and your parking fee is deducted from the entrance fee. Wander at your leisure around the grounds which has information about the individual parts/rooms in the Abbey. Gift shop has some really nice keepsakes/gifts. Lovely lady in the gift shop was helpful and friendly. A must visit if you are in the area.

Used to be marvellous but now scaffolding hides and prevents access to so much it is questionable whether it is worth visiting any more. Certainly you can get better views from a distance than actually paying to go in and finding much is closed off. Local area still stunning though.
