This is a park run by a local community so it is a great way to support the village and people. Even though the park is small I found it realy interesting. Easy to see ring-tailed lemurs, in the morning they sunbathe and have breakfast close to the lake. They were quite relaxed to closely approach them. You can see birds, chameleons or interesting rocky scenery. From the top there is an awesome view to the wide countryside. You can choose different trails with mandatory guides. My tour was about 2 hours-long run over the rocky parts. My guide spoke very well English and provided me not only with nice info about lemurs but also about local life and the community.

The park offers some great views from the rocks, especially during sunset and you can find a lot of chameleons, but the absolute highlight is the amount of ring-tailed lemurs. There are so many and there is no chance not to find them during your hikes. The tend to come close, but they will not touch you or anything, which makes this is a great place to visit.

Anja Park is located on the edge of the RN7, 12 km before arriving at Ambalavao, coming from the South.
The park building welcomes visitors, many coming by car, with ample parking. There are 5 loop tours to choose from, some of which cover specific areas. We can explore the forest where the ring-tailed lemurs are found, which are accustomed to humans, without being domesticated. We can see them up close, perched in the branches feeding on the leaves of the "melia azedarach" tree with serrated dark green leaves, which is the majority here.
The visit continues through a small forest where we find groups of ring-tailed maki lemurs, with their ringed tail made up of 14 alternating black and white rings. Sexual dimorphism does not exist in this species because the individuals all have a coat gray brown dorsally. The belly is off-white or cream. The neck is quite dark gray and the face and throat are rather whitish.
They are often in the trees with the males, who are watching, and the females who are already carrying their babies on their backs, and who move with quite remarkable agility. We sometimes find a ring-tailed lemur posted on the path, which does not seem startled by our presence, but which runs away as soon as we try to approach it too closely!!
The park is located near the large "granite mountain" at an altitude of 1506 m, with changing colors and soft lines due to erosion, which has shaped strange natural architectures; We give it the sweet name of “Three Sisters”. Rock screes have created caves where the Betsileo, who populate the region, took refuge during the war led by Imerina and Queen Ranavalona I, to subjugate them between 1810 and 1860. We can still see the bases of the fortifications made of dry stone walls, which blocked progress before reaching the caves. A maze of paths provides access to the caves, some of which are difficult to access and others, with a fairly high rock vault. We can also observe endemic plants such as melia and ficus baronii. We also find small plants, which grow among the rocks and some of which have medicinal virtues such as euphorbias, meliaceae. On the other hand, others are violent poisons, some of which are based on curare. The most impressive and acrobatic thing is the climbing of large rocks with rough walls, which allow you to put your feet on with good walking shoes and climb them without too much difficulty, making lateral progression for better grip.
The panoramic view from the top of the rock is magnificent. But this implies having crossed some delicate passages helped by my guide, who constantly watches me!! The return is made by making a short abseil descent, on a fairly steep rock, but which turns out to be quite easy and of short duration. The return passes through a small river Ifony, which in this season has little water, but which still maintains a wash house for the women of the village and a rice field.
We visited this park in October, that is to say in the dry season, with in particular a dry "kirano" lake, which reconstitutes itself in the rainy season, which makes the colors of nature pastel. During the rainy season, from December onwards, the landscape of the park must be very different and of course greener! Another experience to try sometime!!

Note that the Anja park is an association of villages which manages it. The inhabitants are distributed among 282 households, or around 400 households with an average density of 42 inhabitants/km2. In general, Anja's families are middle class. Agriculture is the primary economic activity of the villagers, who mainly grow rice, cassava, beans, corn, peanuts, and Bambara peas. Farmers also practice market gardening: tomatoes, potatoes, and tobacco. The techniques are traditional.

the reserve is small, but full of animals. It is located at the base of the Three Sisters massif. The trail is easy, completely flat and very doable by anyone. We saw many Cattà lemurs a few meters from us, chameleons of many species and very colorful insects. Not to be missed.

I suppose that is one of your reasons for going to Madagascar, to see these little Kata. Well, Anja consists of several families of up to 50 members (generally there are 1-2 families in a park and with 30 members maximum). The number of families, also very large, in such a small reserve makes seeing the Kata GUARANTEED. In addition, they are very friendly and it is easy to see scenes like the Kata walking on the ground, playing around or getting very close at practically any time of the day. (In other parks during the central hours of the day from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. they are usually very busy and that makes those hours not the best to visit the park).

The guide was great, with his friends going ahead to locate the different families of lemurs, and we got close to them and some fabby photos. Then I asked if they had giant milipedes there, and they went off and looked for one - they found a small one, with a lot of effort - thank you! Lots of smiles and a great afternoon!
