I enjoyed Birdoswald as a stop on my walk of Hadrian's Wall. The museum is small considering the entrance fee, but had a couple of interesting bits and bobs. I liked the video showing the way the wall interacts with the surrounding landscape. The fort itself is less excavated than some of the others along the wall but the signs showing the changes that have been made on this site through history are fascinating. The reception staff were super friendly and helpful. There is a shelter for walkers to leave bags - not secure but out of view of the main area, and the chance to put my bag down to enjoy the museum was much appreciated. Ask staff for directions to the shelter as its a bit hidden. Had an absolutely immense vegan steakless pasty in the cafe as well, just what was required to power the rest of the day's walking.

Went with a small family (2 adults and 2 children) who I met on my way there (they stopped me for directions). Despite the fort being in the middle of nowhere, the car parking charges were 4 GBP a car. Fortunately (as it turned out) the ticket machine was not working and instructed us to pay at the fort entrance when we bought tickets. When we got to the entrance we discovered that the price for the family would be almost 30 GBP and for me it would have been 12.50 GBP, all for seeing a bunch of stones, most of which can be seen from the road, and so we turned on our heels and walked away. It’s a pity that English Heritage, which is a charity and receives some funding from the UK government, feels that it’s appropriate to charge prices that potentially make it unaffordable for young families to access their sites, and therefore depriving children of the chance to connect to the UK’s rich history.

I’m sorry but this was an absolute waste of my £35 for a family ticket . The visitor centre would be ok on a wet day with a couple of bored children there’s lots of Lego to build your own wall fort etc .
The Roman remains though are a neither extensive or particularly interesting. We then spent another £35 on two children’s lunch bags 2 sandwiches a coffee and a coke. Both children asked why we had bought them here and I wonder myself.
We had hoped to inspire them ready for doing a project on Romans next term at school but think we did the opposite

Birdoswald Fort is well worth visiting.
However, we took the free tour on offer and it would have been very interesting and enjoyable if we could have heard what our guide and the archaeologists had to say but it was mostly impossible. My point being, there is actually no point in offering a tour if the intended information cannot be heard.
Agreed who is leading a tour or speaking to a group should be taught to speak up , speak out and address the group, not to look down at the ground and at times look into the middle distance addressing the horizon a quiet voice.
Very kind of any volunteers, but pointless exercise if it’s not done properly.

We absolutely loved our visit here. Amazing to be able to touch and see over 2000 year old history.
There is a car park available for a price if you stay longer than 15 minutes. There is also a cafe, although we didn’t go there.

Wonderful insight into Roman life on Hadrian's Wall and the eras that followed.
Parts of the buildings and remains of the wall are clearly visible.
Also suitable for children (English).
Beautiful area.

Came with my daughter on Friday. After driving quite quite some time to get here which is out in the beautiful countryside we parked up to find you had to pay in the carpark. I think after paying for price to get in the carpark should be free. I think the site is beautiful but overpriced at £9.50 for an adult. The carpark was then £4 on top. We only had card payment and we didn’t want to drive to find a cash point and shop to get change as it’s in the middle of nowhere. We walked up to the information center which is an uphill walk and explained this situation and they allowed us to pay by card for parking there and they took our registration number.
We were expecting it to be a big site and asked for a map just incase we got lost we were told if we wanted a map we had to buy one and was told we wouldn’t get lost. They were right it’s quite a small site and we were round it within 15/20 minutes £4 for 30 mins parking and £9.50 for a visit of around 15/20 minutes is expensive. We took a couple of photos of the wall. There was a coach load of people also at the site as well as a couple of other families.
The coach load of people were climbing all over the wall and talking selfies on the top of it, the wall is around 1902 years old. Why would people do this as it will wear the wall down further and damage it. I didn’t like to see this and thought there should perhaps be signs asking people not to climb on it to help preserve the wall and it’ll hopefully last another 1902 years!

Brilliant place full of history. Was very lucky to get there at the time we did, as shortly after we left it was closed due to high winds. Lovely scenery to look at too.

We had a lovely afternoon exploring the fort and doing a walk alongside the wall. The exhibition was really informative and well displayed with plenty to keep children entertained.

Can you get to the wall to see and photo the wall without paying the entrance fee? We are not interested in going inside to see exhibits.
Skrevet 15. april 2018
Hi sand glike, you can certainly get to some of the wall, but to get to the central area where the wall parts and shapes where rooms and houses were, you will have to pay and go through the museum to get to the back , although you can just walk it from gilsland and see the wall on the main road from the roman fort entrance,, I recommend you go in lots to see and know
good luck

Is Housesteads Fort walkable from Birdoswald? I have mobility problems, and was thinking I could stay around Birdoswald, while my husband also went to Housesteads, and then came back for me, as there seems to be more facitlities, so that I can rest. Is this feasible? Also, do you have to pay again to go to Housesteads as well as for Birdoswald, or does one fee cover both? Thanks.
