We had an amazing day exploring the rugged beauty of Washington Slagbaai National Park. The incredible coral formations that have shaped this island are something to behold. Be sure to take the "Long Route" so that you don't miss anything! Be sure to have a vehicle that can handle rough terrain. Also ensure that you have ID and have paid the STNPA fee. Some highlights for our family:
- The whale skeleton at the park entrance
- Salina Matus, Salina Bartol and Salina Slagbaai (lots of flamingos)
- Seru Grandi (an almost 200 hundred foot tall limestone wall that contains remnants of ancient coral reefs)
- Suplado Blow Hole (the power of nature is breathtaking)
- Wayaka II (there are three Wayaka) - for some decent snorkeling. You need to leave this area by 3:30 p.m.
- Boca Slagbaai (we wanted to do the cliff jump, but it was closed). You need to leave this area by 4:00 p.m.
Upon leaving the park we were greeted by several donkeys. We then headed out of the park and made our way to Cadushy Distillery for a quick tour and tasting.

We went to this park twice. The short route the first time. It was great fun to do. It's a bumpy ride, but worth it. Some stops are more fun than others. But you keep that. Wayaka 2 is the stop on this route. But get there early. Otherwise it's busy. Took the long route 2nd time. Completely different from the short route. This park is so diverse. We are glad we went twice. The park is also very well cared for.

We bought the park passes online yesterday morning, drove up there, arrived about two minutes after 12 noon. They would not let us in. Darn place was closed at noon. In fact most of the park was closed, totally. Just the south road was open, one way before noon, the coming back the other way, after noon. The guy said the drive wasn't very interesting anyway.

Ya think they might have mentioned this BEFORE we spent the $80 on the park passes? We saw a bunch of local guides even get surprised. Their customers did not look happy at all.

We went on a hike, more than two hours of walking through a rugged but breathtaking area. Good sturdy shoes are a must and drink enough

We went here the last day before we boarded the plane.

This Saturday prior to flight we were unable to dive.

This park is definitely worth it.

If you have the pass (Stinapa) that you also need to dive/snorkel, there are no extra costs. If you don't have this pass yet, we think the entrance fee is really too high.

You need a pickup/Suv/Jeep to drive here. A 4x4 is not necessary, but a car with high tires is required, such as the Nissan Frontier or the Hilux pickups. An ordinary car is not allowed into the park.

Route is well indicated.
Long route will take you 3.5 hours, including several short walks at the viewpoints.

We liked seeing the blowhole. There are several beautiful places where you can snorkel. You must first disinfect the snorkeling gear as soon as you enter the park before visiting the park.

October 2023 you were NOT allowed to dive in the park.

When we were there (October 21) a heavy thunderstorm passed through the park, turning the roads into fast-flowing rivers.

After it was dry, we saw many birds, lizards and beautiful viewpoints.

Please note that there is nothing for sale in the park itself. No gas station, no restaurant. Full tank and your own belongings.

This, to me, was an experience not to missed. To get into the park you need to be able to show the ranger your ID and STINAPA pass, but after the initial ranger station there were not many people in the park. It is full of wild beauty, and I took what seemed like a lot of pictures, and wish I had taken even more. The tour guide, Don, was very knowledgeable about the many sites in the park, and spoke very good English. There are beautiful views around every turn in the road, and nature of every kind to see. The roads are rough, as many have pointed out, but the driver handled it all with ease. There was an opportunity to go snorkeling, but I chose not to go on this day - a personal decision and not a failing of the tour. Lunch was chicken salad sandwiches, which were quite good, and a variety of drinks was offered through the day. This tour will take most of a day, but the time passed quickly. I asked about a million questions about everything we saw and about the culture and living on Bonaire, and Don was game to talk about all of it, whether it was history of the area, the species of birds we saw, the plants, whatever. I learned an incredibly large amount and saw just about everything that could have possibly been included on the tour. There's no way I could have possibly been more satisfied than I was with this tour company, the tour guide, or the tour.

We didn't like it. Having seen more animals and birds on other parts of the island, as true animal lovers, this was a big disappointment. The bays are beautiful, but so are the others on the island.
You can choose to take a short (1.5 hours) or long (2.5 hours) route. Stops are indicated on the plan. You can also climb the brandaris. Bring your passport and stinapa and show it at the entrance. Then it is free. You also need an SUV or pickup. You can't get there with a normal car or scooter.

We enjoyed the park very much, went there 3 times over the course of couple of weeks.
There is quite a bit to do there from several hikes (Subi Brandaris; Kashikunda and Lagadishi trails) to checking out historical buildings to spending time by the ocean.

There are 2 trails to follow, a short one and a long one. If short on time, treat yourself to the long one, the stops are well marked and the park ranger provides the visitors with a detailed map.

Along the long trail are several stops with views over the wild and rugged east shore; beaches on the west shore, as well as remnants of old buildings.

The park rangers will harass you to leave Boka Slaagbaii by 4 pm, try to leave sooner as it can be painful to be stuck in a long line of slowly driving cars.

The day we visited Washington Slagbaai National Park, there weren't a ton of people there. We also went a bit later in the day, which I would not recommend. We had to rush a bit to make sure we made it out before closing. The park closes promptly at 5pm and I was under the impression you could get locked inside if you weren't careful. :)

NOTE: You will need to pay the $40 per person Bonaire nature/water fee (at the guard gate or online before you arrive) to get inside the park - it is valid for 1 year. ALSO, you must present the guard at the entrance gate with your ID - at least if you pay the fee online and bring the QR code with you. That proves the name on the QR code and your ID match.

We did stop at a gift shop right inside the gates of the park and picked up a few little souvenirs. The shop owner asked if we needed any water, as you won't find much (if any) services (that we noticed) once you are deep in the park. They also had a restroom, which was nice.

The roads inside the park are rough in spots, so make sure you are driving a an appropriate vehicle. We rented a Land Rover from Royal Car rental, which worked great.

We decided on the "long" route instead of the "short" route so we could see more during our time at the park. The roads are not necessarily well marked, so you can easily get lost. Especially since the "main" park roads and the side roads are often in the same, rough condition.

We are not divers or snorkelers, but it's still a beautiful park. It's an incredible juxtaposition with desert vistas (so many lizards and cactus') right beside ocean cliffs and water (in every color of blue imaginable) as far as the eye can see. Amazing site to see.

We stopped at the Suplado (blowhole), Boka Kololishi (gorgeous little cove beach with fairly easy access) and Boca Slagbaai (great little beach and you may also see some flamingo's here too). We barely saw any other people except at Boca Slagbaai - that was the most popular spot the day we visited.

NOTE: The day we visited, the park was closed to diving.
