The Synagogue is historic and the Museum has a number of interesting artifacts. Unfortunately, the interpretation is lacking. There is nothing about the synagogue and very little (English only) about the Museum's exhibits. One would think that 400 years of history must come with some amazing stories. Alas, it was not meant to be.

The oldest synagogue that is still actively used in the Western Hemisphere is worth the visit. Sand on the floor, beautiful blue stain glass windows, airy and beautiful.
Was special to go to a Friday night service there.
The museum attached to the synagogue is worth a visit. Super interesting history of the Jewish community in Curacao.

The Synagogue/Museum is well worth a visit. The Synagogue is the oldest in the Americas. It is still active and many of the items in the attached museum are still used for worship. We had a great time speaking with Phyllis. Doesn't take long to visit, but if you are interested in historical places and places of worship it is well worth your time.

Een werkelijk prachtige snoge met een unieke en hele rijke historie. De spirituele diepgang voel je, net zoals bij de Portugese snoge in Amsterdam.
Vriendelijke en deskundige mensen heten je welkom in de aanpalende winkel en het zeer bijzondere museum.

This is the oldest Synagogue in the Western Hemisphere. Since I was in the area and have been to synagogues in Israel, I thought that I would add this one to my list. Upon entering I was told there was a $10 entrance fee since I was a tourist. Now if I lived here I would have not had to pay anything. Interesting but ok I will bite once. There is a museum attached to the synagogue so that made it worth the cost.

Having visited many times previously, it was a great experience to be guided by Mr. Marius Bremmer, whom has in depth knowledge of the Jewish history of Curacao and other Kingdom of the Netherlands former territories and autonomous countries.
The Synagogue is well maintained and very interesting to visit, with the adjacent museum. Complement your Jewish heritage in old Curaçao with a visit to the Beth Haim cemetery, north of the Schottegat lake beside the refinery complex.

Saindo do Porto fomos fazer um city tour pela ilha e conhecemos a Mikve Israel - Emanuel Synagogue, que é a mais antiga sinagoga do hemisfério ocidental. Há um museu no local, mas infelizmente ambos estavam fechados.

The combination of the synagogue and the museum were very impressive and interesting. A piece of Jewish history of which I was totally unaware.

This is a must-see for Jewish travelers. Even non-Jewish travelers who are interested in history might find this worthwhile. We thought it was great. We were only disappointed that we were not in Curacao during Shabbat so that we could attend the services.
Apparently, there is also an Askenazi shul on the island also.

Are you open on Mondays in February and how long would it take to walk from the synagogue to the cruise port. Is it easy to get transportation such as a taxi or TukTuk back to the cruise port?

Hi, I saw your review on Trip Advisor, did you see the Synagogue as part of a city tour? I have never been to this island before, and we will be stopping here in 3 weeks on a cruise. Something that my group would really like to see.

As the previous person told you, it is very easy to get to the Synagogue wherever your cruise docks.In any case, head to the floating bridge and right after you cross it, there there is a tourist info point where you can pick up a map. From there, it is not more than 5 minute walk.

I am a tourist the same as you. I have been to Curaçao and this Synagogue twice. They have services on Friday night and Saturday mornings. Other days they are open for tourists and their Museum attached to the complex is also open. They have a website so you can google the name of this Synagogue for more specifics. They have a Cantor who leads the services and a Rabbi only for special services, and special occasions such as weddings.

You can complete your efforts in a day or two. The Emanuel synagogue visit also has an interesting museum and bare bones gift shop. This is in the center of the capital. There is a small Jewish neighborhood with gentrified homes. There are also 2 Jewish cemeteries. Enjoy your stay on this scenic island!

Dear Debbie,
My wife and I arrived on Curacao via cruise ship and walked from the ship into the downtown area for our own self-performed tour of the synagogue. Allow yourself time to take in all of the Judaica and history. We did see someone who appeared to be leading a tour when we were there. It sounded as if she were speaking Dutch, so I think it was a special tour group. I hope this helps. Sincerely, Dr. G
