Diablotin is the most challenging day hike on Dominica. The trail is straight up to the highest point in the Lesser Antilles, and if you are lucky with weather, the views can be spectacular. Usually the summit is wreathed in clouds, however, and you must settle for the most amazing botanical show as you climb through 3 different ecosystems; the montane forest, the rainforest, and the elfin forest. The trees are covered in epiphytes, orchids, bromeliads, ferns, etc. Wear long pants and shirt, bring gloves, raingear and a warm layer for the wind that awaits you at the summit. Gloves are helpful in grasping tree ferns or slimy rocks. Toward the top you are swinging like a monkey through clusia tree branches. By the time you return to the trailhead your shoes will be encrusted with mud.
Going with a guide adds value as they can teach you about the plants you are seeing. I used Nigel George from Calibishie, who is knowledgeable, vivacious, and solicitous of clients unaccustomed to the full body workout in the mud. If you are fortunate, you may see or more likely hear the elusive and endangered endemic sisserou parrot. The siffleur, or brown trembler, may serenade you with his haunting melody. Figure on a full day and sore legs the following day unless you are supremely fit. Alternatively you can hike More Trois Pitons, trail just cleared, a similar experience but a shorter and less demanding hike. Even easier is Chemin L'Etang, starting from Freshwater Lake and ambling down toward the Atlantic Coast. Nigel knows all three venues.

Scarpe comode! Tanta acqua e pronti a sporcarvi. Vi piacerà.

Amazing bird watching tour guided by Bertrand "Birdy" Jno Baptiste. Traveled to the National Forest Preserve and hiked a nature trail. Sighted over 30 species of birds. Highlights were very close-up sightings of two of the threatened Jaco Parrots, 3 of the 4 species of hummingbirds, a pair of Lesser Antilles Barn Owls guarding their nest, and a huge 700+ year old tree.

This is an incredible hike, but be prepared to work for it. Plan for about 6-7 hours round trip depending on weather. The first half going up is pretty straight forward, climbing upward on clearly marked steps made of natural wood. your legs will feel the burn. The second half is where it gets wild. You must navigate through tree roots, over and under tree limbs, up steep and slippery rocks, roots etc. The path to the top is somewhat visible but a good guide is invaluable. Prepare for mud, rain, and soaked clothes and shoes. A good pair of hiking boots with tread are recommended. The view at the top is dependent on weather and cloud cover. My view was nothing more than clouds, and rain. There was a mist in the air the whole way up, so I was already soaked, but the temperature drops significantly once you emerge from the canopy onto the top. Bring a warm raincoat. Coming down is somewhat faster, but after the rain, it was very slippery and you have to watch eat step closely to avoid twisting an ankle or knee. Be sure to start out early. The parrots are very vocal on your way up in the morning. They are hard to spot. It's a gorgeous journey through the rain forest. Once you get down there is a small stream and waterfall down the road to the left which is perfect for washing the mud off and cooling your feet off in.
If you hire a guide be sure to tip them well. They work hard. A site pass fee is required.

A very steep one hour drive took us fro Portsmouth up into the mountains to the Morne Diablotins National Park where we walked for about 3km. through the rain forest - in the rain - on the Syndicate Trail. A pleasant enough walk, with lots of huge mahogany and teak trees.
The drive to and from the forest was as interesting as the forest itself.

If you are a true hiker, this is a hike you MUST go on when visiting Dominica!

If spending 7.5 hours on a trail that is completely vertical does not sound like fun, or if getting your fashionable sports wear ruined in the mud is unacceptable: stay away!

For those of you who've hiked in the northeastern part of the US, it's comparable to the vertical sections of Devil's Path in the Catskills--except this trail is entirely vertical!

My wife and I made the ascent Easter Sunday, 2017, under clear skies. At the head of the trail is a sign warning you not to start after 10:30am. We started at 11am, and were fine...

For the first hour and a half, you climb steep stairs past tall trees and noisy parrots. This I found to be the hardest part.

The next hour and a half or so is spent scrambling over slippery rocks and through massive tangles of roots; very fun! If you over-prepared by bringing a big rucksack and hiking stick, you'll never make it past this--it's a tight squeeze! (A backpack with some water and food is sufficient.)

It took us 3 hours to get to Seacat Rock, a boulder near the actual summit. We sat there for over an hour, and had our lunch while enjoying the view of Portsmouth and the surrounding peaks from above. It's pretty windy and misty up there, and the view became completely clouded over just as we left.

The hike down took 3 hours and 15 minutes. It can get tricky in areas finding a good foothold; the stairs towards the beginning of the trail are quite treacherous since they're steep and there's nothing to hold on to.

By the time we reached the car, night had just fallen, and the frogs had started to chirp.

I'd have to say Morne Diablotin is my most favorite of all the hikes I've ever been on due to the challenge of it, and the rewarding view at the peak (if you're lucky enough to have clear skies!)...

Our day started at 09.30 am when we were met by Winston our guide at the PAYS office. It only took about 1 1/2 hours because Winston kept on stopping to give us interesting items to look at. He was especially hot on native plants and patiently found all sorts of herbs and cooking ingredients.
We arrived at the Visitors Centre and donned our hiking boots before setting off on a short Rain-forest trail, called the Syndicate Trail. Winston kept up the commentary and took us to the lookout. Here we met up with another guide who was equally knowledgeable on bird life. We had been hearing parrots during our walk but they had actually seen the rare Sisserou and Jaco parrots.
The trail was very easy to walk, a six year old in the group easily kept up with us! It took about 2 hours to walk ( 5 miles or 8 Km) but we were not rushing and really had our moneys worth of information.
Back in the minibus and we travelled on to Milton Falls. Another short hike, with water crossings and a cool pool to paddle in at the waterfall. Usually the visitors Centre would have been open but there was a problem and on this day it was closed. We took lunch on the way back to Portsmouth just outside the town where the students usually eat, there was plenty of choice and it was inexpensive.
Winston was a spectacular guide.
The Island is very friendly and it is easy to arrange any tour you fancy, As visiting Cruisers we took advantage of the Pays office and their experience, there are plenty of operators around with varying degrees and types of experience.

Took us a little over 4 hours to get to the top. First half is a kinda steep trail. Second half is mostly climbing up slippery rocks and going over/under trees that grow sideways. The tree part was a lot of fun, kinda like a jungle gym. It's also really cool when you get towards the top, it opens up and you're on top of the canopy. There's a few viewpoints, but you probably won't see much because it's usually foggy towards the top. Also, if you're planning on eating lunch up there, bring a jacket b/c it gets cold. It's not an easy hike, probably about the same difficulty as boiling lake, but you need more upper body strength for this one to pull yourself up. You can probably do it without a guide, but there are a few parts you might get lost b/c the trail isn't marked so it's best to have one. Oh and be prepared to get very muddy. There were a few times when people's shoes got sucked off by the mud.

Well, we did not make it to the top. It was our first full day in Dominica and we were totally not acclimated to the new climate and its hydration needs. We turned back when we were pretty close to the top, but the mud, slippery rocks, roots, and branches made the going too rough. We did not use a guide, but we think had we started earlier and been adequately prepared we could have done it. Still, it was worth an attempt and it taught us that when people say a rainforest mountain is hard, we should believe them.

I think there is technically a fee for this mountain, but we found that out after the fact.
