We stopped by after a day of shopping in San Pedro. This was very unexpected but so happy we got the opportunity. We had a private driver for the day and he suggested we may enjoy this. He was not wrong. What a beautiful, peaceful place in the heart of this bustling city to sit and give thanks for all the blessings in life.

During our trip to San Pedro de Macrois we really didn’t have much planned. The city is after all not much of a tourist attraction like nearby Santo Domingo is. This included what we intended to see, with one exception. I’d noticed the Catedral San Pedro Apostol on maps as part of the pre trip planning and decided it might be worth a look.
The present church was built in 1910 on the site of its predecessor. This first church was constructed in the 19th Century and was destroyed by hurricanes and fire.
The new church was the first building to be constructed in the Dominican Republic of cement from a shipment that had recently arrived in the country as part of an overall modernization process. This was far superior to the palm and wood construction of the original building.
The church is located in the centre of the city not far from the Rio Higuamo (Higuamo River). It sits on small square with the Estatua De Los Padres Patrios, a monument to the Fathers of the Dominican Republic in front.
Flanking it to the south is the Municipal Hall of San Pedro de Macrois. On the opposite side are two small buildings containing respectively the Centro Cultural Macorisano and the Museo de Historia De SPM.
The simple freshly white painted cement church stands in stark contrast to most of the surrounding buildings. Many of the original ones are sadly run down and look it. Others have been replaced by more modern structures like the massive Almacenes Iberia store directly behind the church.
The bell tower is rather high and in fact can be seen from most of the surrounding area. This was a convenient navigation aid for us in our stroll around the city.
Entrance is through the north side door off of Av. Independcia across from the Museo de Historia De SPM, although one should check with the church security guards posted at all entrances as this may have changed.
The first thing you notice once inside is how cool it is, even though there is no air conditioning only a few fans. The concrete walls buttresses and ledges are all in the Gothic style.
The white paint contrasts starkly with the dark wood of the elaborately carved benches, pulpit and altar. A splash of colour is provided by the oil paintings and stain glassed windows. One of these above the main entrance has a Franciscan crest in honour of the order who built the church.
Entrance is free, however there is a poor box near the entrance for much appreciated donations.

Along the river in San Pedro, is the Catedral San Pedro Apostol, the heart of the city both spiritually and geographically, the cathedral stands whitewashed against the colourful buildings nearby. A small courtyard in front of the church was quiet with some locals and tourists milling about. Skateboarders scooted across, enjoying the even tiles. The church is open to guests and visitors, and they won't be disappointed walking inside to see the artwork, carvings, statues, and woodwork.
The cathedral has been recently restored, and is in good shape. Worshippers pray and light candles, so quietness and calmness is appreciated.
Worth a visit.

lindo paisaje un estructura bien interesante a orillas del río Iguamo. Un cantidad de edificaciones de principio del siglo XX realmente impresionantes, que demuestra la bonanza de eso años de altos precios del azucar

The church stood tall and huge in the center of the town. It was a picturesque church but just like any other church in the countryor where i came from the Philippines.

Visited during rum and cigar tour. Nice place with place in history. Still in service, if you are interested in history and religion, I recommend. Takes just few minutes to look if you do not want to pray.
