Small but well curated gallery covering 1,000 years of history. It was free at the time of my visit. One of few galleries that features local artists who were world class. Underrated.

The Jamaica National Gallery is a small yet sound gallery that I would suggest to anyone that loves art. The gallery is in a very nice building and is laid out well; walking through the peaceful atmosphere of the two floors feels great. The art covered many different themes and types and although there is not loads in the gallery it was mostly interesting pieces. The exhibition that was on when I visited 'Women of Reggae" was also pretty good although quite humble in its offerings. I would have loved for the gift shop to offer prints from the "Women in Reggae' exhibition however none were available. Overall, for a visitor to Kingston that adores art I would certainly recommend a visit to the gallery as it was very interesting and in a lovely building but I would say it may be less compatible for families with small children etc. as they could speed through it very quickly and may not find it too engaging.

Go see Pressure - current multimedia, jaw- droppingly good exhibition containing a collection of some of Jamaica's finest contemporary artists. Would be equally at home in New York or London etc. Terriffic to see Jamaica taking its considerable home-grown talent seriously. Even my teenage son was mildly entertained!

This is the best place for birthday, Christmas gifts. COVID has slashed the foot traffic this place sees. The curators are world class, the exhibitions, mind-blowing, the Last Sundays shows are off the chain. And wait for it...the Reggae Posters Competition, unique to the world and gratifyingly, unique to this location, the entries are staggering...

First floor currently dedicated to "Jamaica Jamaica!" music history exhibition through June 2020, from mento to Vybz Kartel; great overview and I particularly liked the laptop that showed the progression of a single musical motif through the decades. Second floor filled with paintings and sculptures. British and Spanish sections kind of "eh" just because British and Spanish art is everywhere. Jamaican sections much more interesting with some fantastical interesting paintings like "Fairyscape" and sculptures by Edna Manley, who was Norman Manley's wife. Admission only JA$600pp. If not hiring a taxi then you will need to take a bus and walk through downtown which is fairly crowded and a little intimidating as a non-local but I did not have any bad experiences.

It’s Reggae Month in Jamaica and The calendar is filled with activities but one of the note worthy activities beyond the hustle and bustle is the exhibition “Jamaica Jamaica: and how Jamaican Music Conquered the World” a detailed look of how Jamaican music originated and how it has merged on the world stage. For the Reggae enthusiasts a Must see. Some history this exhibition was first previewed at the Philharmonie in France and now commissioned by The Jamaica govt. If you are in the Kingston Area it is a must .

I had a lovely interesting time visiting the gallery accompanied by a very knowledgable local lady who was familiar with several of the artists and their work. As a tourist it was my first visit and i was also impressed by the settings and displays of so many lovely works of art.

The talent is evident in the vibrant and diversified pieces of art on display at this museum.
From sculpture to wood carvings to paintings - the museum embraces all with a wonderful display. A good selection of contemporary ceramic plate art - modernistic and appealing. The boldness of the colours reflects Caribbean life and the tradition is shown together with more modern and abstract examples. Very beautiful and inspiring.
Allow two hours to look at the museum and for a quick cuppa in the restaurants cum coffee shop before leaving.

Well worth a visit. This gallery has fabulous exhibitions and paintings that depict Jamaican history from the indigenous people, slavery right through to modern time. Sadly we were the only visitors! It takes about an hour and a half to go round,and I would highly recommend it
