The adventure started when I was picked up at the bus terminal in Kingston. It was a 2-hour drive to a Rasta lodge somewhere in the Blue Mountains. The drive was slow as we ventured on some pretty rough roads to get there - All part of the experience!

I woke at 1:30am, got dressed, had a bite then went outside to meet the rest of the hiking group. There were 7 of us in total, including two Rasta guides. I’ve never hiked in the dark before, so this was a new experience for me. We started the up-hill trek around 2 in the morning, so it was fairly cold – A first for me in the Caribbean. We started the hike on a rough road that past a couple of properties and within a few minutes, we were on ‘Jacobs ladder’ - a long and lazy switchback dirt road with many ‘washed out’ ruts. It was fairly steep at this point and I heated up quite quickly, so I peeled off my coat and was back to my usual Caribbean hiking attire of shorts and a t-shirt.

It was dark, with our headlamps providing the only light, so I didn’t see much of the trail in advance, rather I just put one foot in front of the other and kept moving forward – Basically focusing the light and my attention on the ground, so as to keep my footing.

Once we were passed Portland gap the temperature suddenly dropped again and we were there… At the peak 7,450 feet (2,270m) above sea level! It took us about 3.5 hours, taking only a couple of quick rest stops, to make it to Blue Mountain Peak. It was still dark and I couldn’t see much. After a few minutes, my body had cooled down from the hike and the cold really started to set in so I put my coat and winter hat on and waited for the sun to rise...

As it became more and more light out, I realized that the shapes all around us, weren’t mountain tops, but were in fact clouds… We were above the clouds! That was a stunning surprise! As the sun slowly climbed over the horizon, we could start to see the surrounding valleys and distant mountain ranges, as well as Kingston’s twinkling lights below us near the coast.

On the way down the mountain, I realized that the top half of the trail weaves its way through heavy rain-forest canopy, although there were occasional breaks, when I could see coffee plantations, several valleys, ridges and mountains, as well as some coastline in the distance.

What an awesome "bucket list" experience!

Lovely, nature as it is!
Be prepared for a long walk up , as it is in nature the walk can be wet, slippery and rocky.
The way down is sharp and hard on the knees (lol)
Be fit before you try

We visited the Blue Mountain peak area and coffee plantation as part of a much larger trip the same day. The duration of this trip from Kingston was half a day including transportation back to Montego Bay.
The peak area is not for those of faint heart lots of very winding steep roads but wow worth every white knuckle. We learned about how blue mountain coffee is grown and retains its perfect flavour and had the opportunity to sample and buy. It is all a very fair price too. The area is home to many rare plants and the long roads give you a great insight into how the people on the mountain live. I would highly recommend this trip.

The journey to the start of the trail was a rough one. The roads were in very poor condition. The actual hike was fantastic! I loved every minute of it, even the ones when my knees felt like they were on fire. The hike is a very challenging one and at the peak is freezing!!! Im talking lower than 15 degrees Celsius and it gets colder. Unfortunately, when I went it was very cloudy at the peak so when the sun rose there wasn't much of a view. However, along the trail there are still spots with beautiful views. For me going to the peak was for the challenge of the hike so despite not getting any breathtaking photos at the peak I was more than satisfied with the experience. Be warned though, between the transportation to and from, park fees and a tour guide it is very expensive.

I stayed @ O’Jay’s Guest House for 2 nights, about 3KM from the trailhead. I attempted the trek my first night solo with my headlamp & Jay’s dog. Took 2 dead ends, there is no signage at all where the road narrows into the trail & ended up frustrated & turning back as I could find no info online as to exactly where I should be going. Disappointing! Night 2, did the trail, renewed confidence with 2 other people from the guest house. Still managed the miss the narrowed trail, but found it after some searching, a sign here would be GREAT. From the trailhead to the peak was a little over 3 hours, we were all in average shape & paced ourselves. It was very windy & very cold at the top! Fairly clear morning so we had a beautiful view & the hike down featured amazing views. Going downhill is hard on the knees after awhile. We took about 3 hours to get back to the trailhead.
I did the trip with: 1L water bottle (refill at Ranger station both ways), energy bar & 2 bananas, hiking sandals, rain coat, long sleeved T-shirt, tank top & shorts.
Took the route taxi/bus from Kingston to Mavis Bank then had Jay pick me up from there ($).

We took a cab from Kingston to Mavis Bank (35US$) and were planning to hike up from there and see how far we would get. The road is steep and there is not much to see. After about an hour we got to Hagley Gap. Seeing the steepness of the road there we decided to take a 4x4 to the start of the trail to the peak (25US$).

The hike to the peak was steep and physically challenging due the almost constante incline. We managed to do it in 2.5 hours, going as fast as we could. The entrance fee for toerist is 20US$. The trial would be very beautiful on a sunny day, but unfortunately it was really cloudy. The few times the sun broke through, you get a breathtaking sight. In addition, we met many lovely people on the trail that really showed us how loving and friendly the people are.

The way down is quite relaxed and back at Whitfield we took a 4x4 to Mavis (35US$) and the taxi back to our hotel (35US$).

All in all, it was quite expensive but standing on the highest point is always a special feeling. If you're sure the weather is good, go for it. Otherwise, Holywell is a better place to visit.

My wife and I had a nice time here but to be honest, we were a little underwhelmed. It just seemed like this was their tourist exhibit but since there was no activity going on, it seemed a tad staged.
But we had always wanted to visit here, so we can strike this off of our JA bucket list.

Blue Mountain Peak was an awesome climb!! Gorgeous views throughout the climb of the mountains and coffee plantations. By close to the top we were in the clouds though so there was no hope of a view from the top. I was told that it is VERY rare to have a view from the top - like a once or twice per year occurrence. It means that there is a ton of moisture in the air near the Peak which ends up creating an “Elfin forest” which is as magical as it sounds. Worth the hike to see the forest at the Peak regardless of the lack of view!

I did the sunrise climb.Left from Whitfield Hall at 2:30am with an amazing guide named Hopeton. If you can, find someone who knows him and request him as your guide!! He is so knowledgeable about the land, hiking, Jamaican politics, and the human condition. The 9 hour hike flies by in his company! Highly recommended.

I hiked up part of the Blue Mountain with the best guide called Shaun (you can look at the pictures from his hikes and get in touch with him through his Instagram account : wanderlusttrailsja). He took us through the mountain through many different types of vegetation with swimming holes along the way and told us about the different produce being grown on the mountain (coffee, bananas, chilies, cocoa, etc.)! We stopped to eat some curry goat and sweet potato pudding halfway through the walk (at Gap Café) and it was delicious! The trek up the mountain was about 4 hours and maybe 2-3 hours back down. Shaun gave us a list of things to bring and was very professional. I highly, highly recommend going up the Blue Mountain with him!
