A short drive from La Parguera there is a special place to visit for the views, the hike and the wild life preservation efforts, el Faro de Cabo Rojo or Faro Los Morrillos.
You can spend a couple of hours or the day here, bring your binoculars, your bird identifying catalogs, snacks, plenty of water, sun protection gear and your swim wear. You may hike up through the main road to take pictures of this historical site built in 1882. This lighthouse marks the southeast entrance from the Caribbean Sea through the Mona Passage into the Atlantic Ocean. The glass lantern still has the original illuminating technology. The building is quite impressive from outside, if you wish to visit the inside call to check when they offer tours (787-851-1025).
Notice the cliffs and rock formations, the backdrop of the mountains and the wildlife refuge in the area. Remember, this is a hike in rocky and uneven terrain, recommended for those who enjoy hikes and walks in nature. Be careful not to stand close to the cliffs and drops, be aware of falling rocks. No bathrooms available. No wheelchair access. Bring insect repellent and appropriate shoes for the hike. To enjoy the outsides in style, use the body system and always tell someone where you are going. I hope you enjoy this experience!

We absolutely loved Cabo Rojo Lighthouse for photography. This is a great location. We own Photography Magazine Extra. You can go to our magazine and read all about the Puerto Rico photography hotspots. And this was the top spot!!

Warning, that road leading to lighthouse is impassable and washed out about a mile away from the lighthouse. Been closed for sometime.

We were vacationing in PR and were driving from Humacao to Rincon and decided to take the 1.25 hour detour to see the Cabo Rojo lighthouse and the nearby cliffs. Unfortunately, the road (Rt 301) that leads to the lighthouse is in such poor repair that we were unable to make it to the lighthouse. There was a crater in the road that we could not tackle in our rental car (car was too low to ground). It would have been more than one mile each way to walk, which was not feasible for us. We had to abandon the lighthouse visit. Very disappointing! Not sure why a steel plate was not used to temporarily fix the crater. SUVs were able to make it through the crater, but only after stopping to assess the best way to navigate it.

Google didn't even mark the road closed, but 10 miles out from it, the road was closed. Also, the stench from the flooded Mangroves and the debis and garbage floating was disgusting! Hopefully it will get cleaned up soon! Even the #1 Beach down there wasn't great....the waters were murky. So disappointing after an hour drive from Rincon.

Beautiful water and view. The road there is in very bad shape, you need a Jeep or SUV. Make sure to carry cold water and wear good shoes. Great place to have a pic nic at the Beach. Also the parking is limited so you may want to go earlier than later. Been here twice and you should go too.

The drive from the entrance to the parking area is extremely bumpy. If you decide to walk from the entrance, be prepared to have a very long walk and take shoes you wouldn’t mind messing up and getting dirty. Either way you go, it is absolutely worth it once you get to the lighthouse. The views are breathtaking. The lighthouse was locked up (I’m not sure if it’s ever open). Lots of trails. Be very cautious of the uneven rocky walk and cliffs, especially if you have young children with you. There were also packs of wild dogs that were trying to approach us aggressively so I would highly recommend carrying a knife or some sort of protection for yourself.

The lighthouse has a nice view out to sea, but the road in is the worst we have been on in years. The pathway you climb to reach the lighthouse is about half a mile. And is strewn with loose gravel, so be careful walking it. There is also a terrible stench from the salt flats at the base of the hill that sickened our wives
It lingered inside our car for several miles after we left.

Answer sto all the questions we were originally confused about… To get to the area we put El Faro Los Morrillos de Cabo Rojo in the Waze app. No need to specify to Waze if you want to see the Salt Flats, the lighthouse, Playa Sucia, Playuela, or Puente de Piedra because the one route takes you to all of them. We passed the salt flats first. They weren’t very pink in the morning but later when we left around 1pm they were more pink. Both times of day had clear skies with a few clouds. Then we arrived at the gate that says the hours of the gate opening which says 9am-5pm. Don’t expect them to actually come at 9am. The locals waiting in their cars say it can sometimes be as late as 9:30am but on this day they didn’t come until 9:53am to unlock the gate. Talk about Island time! I wouldn’t walk from the gate because it’s about 1.5 miles and often hot. When they open the gate you drive down dirt roads and yes they get really bad with potholes. I definitely wouldn’t drive a car, it needs to be an SUV or Jeep for the bottom of the vehicle to clear the potholes and huge bumps (4 wheel drive not needed). You’ll soon come to the parking lot where you can see the lighthouse just in front. Instead of parking there, we continued on down the road (there’s only one way to go and it’s towards the left), more bumps, and then you get to a second yellow gate. This is where you park for the beach. The beach is Playuela but some call it Playa Sucia- it’s not at all “dirty” it’s just named that by non-locals because sometimes seaweed washes up. There was some seaweed when we were there but didn’t take away from the beauty of the gorgeous white sands crescent shaped beach in any way. We also went on a day considered windy on the weather app and it was perfectly fine. The beach and waves were all great and the light winds didnt bother us in any way. From here you can swim, explore around, or hang out (there’s lots of great shade trees at the beach if you arrive early to get one for your group to “make camp” for the day). My husband and 14 yr old daughter walked along the left side of the crescent shape (left- when facing the water) rocks for awhile and got some beautiful photos. Then my other teen and I joined them to walk up towards the right side to the lighthouse with the main goal of seeing the view from the cliffs and not necessarily checking out the lighthouse. Of all the photos I took, none were of the lighthouse, they were the views of the beach and the cliffs- breathtaking! In terms of any danger- just like any time on land with a drop off just have common sense and of course keep young kids near. There were people of all ages waking around and checking out the view. There are many dirt paths around the area and you can clearly see where you are going so just pick one. And I wouldn’t even call it hiking, you’re just walking around checking out the beauty. From the beach up to the lighthouse is just 5 min and then passed the lighthouse to Puente de Piedra is maybe 7-10 more minutes. But really you’re not paying attention to time, you’re too busy enjoying the scenery! If you can’t find Puente de piedra then just put it in Google Maps and click on the walking figure and it will show you a walking path that leads you right over. We didn’t walk over the natural bridge- just didn’t seem wise. There’s a quick way to get down to the beachy area below that just takes a minute or two and is easier than it may look at first. Then just retrace your steps back to the beach. We had a great time and got some amazing photos. Definitely go if you’re not sure… it’s not complicated in any way like some reviews may seem.

Although the road was a bit rough to get there the views were amazing! We would have liked to get a closer look at the salt flats on the way but the tower and visitor's center were not open on the day we went. The beach below was nice and calm. A relaxing way to spend a few hours with spectacular colors. The parking became more crowded as the day went on.
