A gem in the Caribbean. Definitely worth the effort! Beautiful beaches, friendly locals, great snorkeling, and not overpriced and crowded.

The views are amazing!! This is more of a getaway, secluded romantic vacation. If you’re looking to party and the beach and what not then this is not the island to go to. Also, since it’s an island plan to travel almost half the day to the resort!! there’s only I believe two or three taxis on the island. It takes 30 minutes to get to one side of the island and the other. But when you land at the airport, it’s an hour taxi or Uber ride to the ferry, which where you have to wait with a bunch of people who actually live there! They speak a lot of Spanish so I would suggest learning some Spanish…. Especially when you take the 30 minute ferry ride to the island then people really only speak Spanish. You run into a few Americans obviously. However, that is their language!! it’s a beautiful island. The resort I stayed at, had wild horses just walking around, an infinity pool, the horses were not mean at all. I literally have videos of me petting one, although I suggest to be careful.
It’s about a 15 minute walk to the black sand beach. Again, I’m speaking of the resort I stayed at. And we each had our own little bungalow. I would’ve gave this hotel 10 stars or the island 10 stars but everything closes early around 3 to 4 PM and I’m talking like grocery stores. There’s not many there. They’re more like little gas stations. But they have the necessities water milk you know stuff like that. There was a few bars that were open late Ish. The normal hours to midnight or two … also like any trip make sure you book any events ahead of time! :-) as they were completely out of every single thing to do on my birthday!!! They wouldn’t even do anything so that was pretty upsetting. And that was the entire island I called.

This is an island that is incredibly beautiful with fantastic beaches and multiple attractions. It’s easy to get around in a small vehicle.

Vieques is a paradise, with , beautiful beaches and paradise, interesting places, and friendly people. It is a place to stay 4 to 5 days , you can enjoy underwater busing ,fishing on the different beaches ,boating,great places to eat,that is more expensive,since they must import it on the ferry ⛴️,It has the Fortin, places to stay Sea gate, Airbnb and others.You must rent a car suv, in short you will spend a few days relaxed.Attt.Emilio

We just returned from five days on beautiful Vieques. We are a large family of 12 from 5 to 78 years of age. There is something fun for everyone. The highlight of our trip was Fun Brothers Bio Bay Tour. It was an amazing experience for us all made even better by the clear glass bottom boats. The double kayaks made it possible for the youngest kids as well as older inexperienced adults to enjoy kayaking. We rented Jeeps from Maritza’s —all in good shape. Enjoyed good food at Bili’s, Duffy’s, Banana’s. Villa Chavaniac was perfect for our large family providing privacy for all but a great family area with large private pool overlooking the ocean.

I loved Vieques and am really looking forward to going back. This was my first time there and I went for a mini birthday getaway. It wasn't high season, so there weren't many tourists around, which was nice. It was hurricane season though, so it rained quite a bit. The island is still beautiful though, even with the rain. I had the best Puerto Rican food there. Billy's Restaurant in Esperanza is awesome. We went to Caracas Beach (aka the Victoria Secret beach) and Little Rooster Beach. We stayed at Finca Victoria which is a super gorgeous property; I wish I could live there long-term. Getting around the island is a little tricky if you don't drive. We were only there for two nights (one of which it rained nonstop), so we didn't think it was worth renting a Jeep; that would have been nice though as the roads are well-maintained and almost empty in a lot of areas (just be mindful of the wild horses grazing). I'd read before going that people rent bicycles to get around, but I would not recommend this unless you are very active & fit. We never saw a bicycle there, a couple golf carts here and there, but mostly cars. There are taxis that you can call to get around and the rates are decent. This wouldn't be the ideal destination for partygoers, but if you want peace and relaxation in a very picturesque location, Vieques is the one for you! In terms of getting there, we took an Uber ($80) to Ceiba and then the ferry ($2pp). On the way back, we took the Vieques Airlink which was a thrilling experience. Not very scary (I say this as someone who is afraid of heights) and honestly the smoothest plane ride I've ever been on. Thanks to Vieques, my birthday was super memorable and one for the books. This is a very special place.

Stayed at secluded AirBnB (awesome place btw) - Casa Baraka. Great host.
Rented golf cart, got around that way, but limited our driving after dusk - way too many winding/hilly roads with tree-obstructed views shared with cars. Clearly not safe, but that’s how it is there and most locals seem to be aware of danger to folks in golf carts (although it must be annoying). Roads are very narrow in some places and full of potholes so be careful.
Also, only a couple of gas stations on the island so be mindful of gas level when embarking on your adventure.
Did do the bunkers drive, cool but a bit creepy-best done in early day before it gets too hot.
Also went up the hill with the overlook-a few warnings about that:
- not easy to get there, had to take golf cart through a very narrow trail to get there
- remember to bring lots of water, you will need it; I think it’s like a 1-2 mike hike uphill in 95+ degree weather with 100% humidity
- stop in the shade frequently on your way up
- remember you are in the middle of nowhere where you likely won’t have signal and emergency crew would have a hard time finding you. Not recommended if you can’t handle the treadmill.
Beautiful island -very laid back vibes. Liked beaches, especially Caracas beach! One of the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever seen. Playa Punta Arenas was also very nice, but a long trek in a golf cart. El Gallito/Gringo beach was close to where we stayed and had one of the most breathtaking sunsets I’ve experienced.
The moon was full on the days we were there and we were advised not to try the bioluminescent tour as we wouldn’t see much. So keep the moon cycle in mind if you plan on visiting. Quick internet search will provide info on moon cycle.
Vieques night life is limited. Couple of places in Esperanza. Liked the rooftop at “ El Blok” to watch the sunset with live music (very chill).
Didn’t do much in the town of Vieques itself other than visit the fort and walk around the small town plaza.
Overall a very relaxing few days to contrast our stay in Old San Juan.

Locals don’t want you here and they make no efforts to hide it. Aggressive driving on narrow roads. I had a local cut me off and aggressively threaten me ( and told to leave their island alone and how they hate tourists). Having been to over 50 countries- this is the first time we met with such hostility and feeling of being unwelcome.

The stay was amazing, I stayed at Casa castaway and rented a golf cart from rueditasonthego.com. They are reliable, on time, carts were clean and was waiting for me at the airbnb. I would recommend both of them.

Vieques is beautiful, it has beautiful beaches, especially Caracas Beach, I recommend bringing snorkeling equipment so you can see the underwater views that are meters from the shore. I recommend renting a little golf or a mini jeep because the taxi transfer is difficult and very expensive. And if you arrive by plane, make sure you have a transfer from the airport to the hotel because it is very difficult to get a taxi. Don't forget to eat at the restaurant next to Vieques Puerta al Quenepo, it has excellent cuisine

Has anyone a solution for how to travel in this island with a baby? Do they allow babies in golf carts without car seats? I heard you can’t put car seats on golf carts and regular cars are not advisable. Any one with advice or ideas?

We rent a jeep from Maritza's. Much easier to get around. We've been on Vieques five times; would definitely recommend a jeep.

Any advice of what part of this island to stay in for first visit in March? We love water views, snorkeling, beach access and some town access.

This island is beautiful everywhere but if you are going into any beach please refrain from food at least two hours before so bathroom trips won’t be an issue. Some of these beaches have no bathrooms. You can’t combine food intake and beach adventure. It’s one of the other.

May 2021 We are headed to culebra for a few days and vieques for 10 days.
We have verizon service. I know it was fine before Maria but does it work now work on either island?
How is the internet for either island? Will I b able to do a zoom call in a cafe? In vieques we are on Isabel side.

We're considering a trip in April 2021. Does anyone know how to access COVID testing before our return to NYC? What about the reserve beaches - I'd heard they were closed - is the reserve open?

Hello! Looking at potentially visiting Vieques in mid-April this year (2021). I've heard that the ferry is operating to Culebra, but to Vieques for residents only. Any news on when this might change? Also looking for confirmation that flights to Vieques are a go for non-residents. Appreciate your help!

Thanks for the answers. Looks like we would need a negative test just to get to PR, and then could only fly to Vieques rather than take the ferry. We decided to pass this year because of the problems that creates. Hope to get back there next year!
